Five bovine smugglers were arrested as police foiled their bids to smuggle bovines to the Kashmir Valley from Poonch district of the this region Friday evening, officials said. Based on a credible information regarding illegal transportation of bovines, a police party intercepted five vehicles at different places, which were on their way towards the valley, they said. During search of the vehicles, 50 animals, which were found illegally loaded in these vehicles without any legal permission, were rescued, the officials said. Consequently, the accused drivers -- Mohd Sageer, Ghulam Murtaza, Ghulam Mustafa, Mohd Maroof and Mohd Amin -- were arrested, they said, adding the vehicles were seized.
Eight drug peddlers were arrested in separate cases in Jammu and Poonch districts of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, police said. A police team on routine patrolling in Bhour camp area in Jammu, came across three persons who tried to suspiciously avoid them, they said. Jatinder Singh, Bikram Jeet Singh and Taranpreet Kaur, all residents Bhour, were arrested and the police recovered 80 grams of heroin and cash worth Rs 47,300 from the trio, they said. Another three drug peddlers were arrested in Poonch after the police recovered 11 grams of heroin from them. Shakeel Ahmed, Wajahat Ali and Mehmood Ahmed were moving in a suspicious manner when they were intercepted, the police said. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Friday arrested a 48-year-old man from Tamil Nadu's Trichy city in connection with the Ramalingam murder case. Mohammed Faruk was arrested a day after the NIA officials conducted a search operation at his residence in Illangakurichy village in Tiruchirappalli district during which they seized some digital evidence, officials said. He was summoned for questioning by the officials on Thursday. The evidence collected from the residence and his questioning revealed the extent of involvement of Faruk in the case, the officials said. Ramalingam was attacked by a gang on February 5. The accused used sickles and tried to chop off his hands, grievously injuring him in the process. His son's efforts to protect him from the attackers were in vain. He was pronounced dead at a government hospital on February 6. The AAP Friday sent a notice to the BJP and its East Delhi Lok Sabha seat candidate Gautam Gambhir demanding an apology for the derogatory pamphlet allegedly circulated against Atishi Marlena, failing which "appropriate legal proceedings will be initiated". The Supreme Court Friday ordered that illegal foreigners in Assam who have completed more than three years in detention may be released after they provide biometric details in a secured database. A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna also directed them to furnish a bond of Rs 1 lakh with two Indian sureties and give details of address of stay after release. In a major goof up in a civic-run hospital in Ahmedabad in Gujarat, the corpse of a Muslim woman was handed over to the kin of a Dalit woman who was stabbed to death in Bavla town on May 8. The issue came to light Friday morning after relatives of the Muslim woman, identified as Nasrin Banu, arrived at Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation-run V S Hospital and realised she had been the subject of morgue mix-up. According to hospital authorities, a staff at the hospital's morgue handed over Banu's corpse thinking it was that of Mittal Jadhav when the latter's kin arrived on Thursday.
