Leopard mauls minor girl in U'khand

A seven-year-old girl was mauled to death by a leopard in Uttarakhand's Nainital district, a forest official said today. The incident happened last evening in Beluakhan village, around 18 km from here, when the victim, Jaya, was playing outside her house, he said. The girl's mutilated body was found around 1 km away near a pit. Divisonal Forest Officer (DFO) Dharam Singh Meena visited the bereaved family members and gave them Rs 50,000 as compensation, the official said.

Policewoman found dead on rail tracks in Mumbai

The body of a policewoman was found on rail tracks here today, a senior GRP official said. The woman, Pratiksha Shinde (26), was a constable attached to the Local Arms Unit of the Mumbai police and originally hailed from Solapur, he said. Her body was found on the tracks between Sion and Kurla stations on the Central Railway line at around 1.20 pm, the official said. Prima-facie, it appears Shinde was knocked down by an express train while crossing the tracks, he said. However, police are probing her death from all angles and not ruling out suicide, the official said. The Kurla GRP has registered an accidental death case, he added.

PNB fraud: PAC calls top officials of ED, Customs for briefing

Parliament's Public Accounts Committee has called the Revenue Secretary and top officials of the Enforcement Directorate, Income Tax department and Customs to brief the panel on the PNB fraud case, a PAC member said. A sub-committee of the PAC wants to question the top officials over the Punjab National Bank fraud and the 80:20 gold import scheme that was announced in 2013 to restrict the imports of the precious yellow metal, which may have helped diamantaire Nirav Modi and owner of Gitanjali Gems Mehul Choksi, the member of the panel said, on condition of anonymity. Another member of the panel said that the committee wants to question the officials about the ongoing investigation into the fraud and whether both Modi and Choksi and various other jewellers misused the 80:20 scheme for their benefit. All officials are scheduled to appear before the panel on March 1, the member said. In August 2013, the government had placed import restrictions on gold by introducing the 80:20 scheme. ...

Nitish govt shielding "drunk" BJP leader alleges Tejaswi

Six imported vehicles of Pune developer Kulkarni seized

Six imported vehicles belonging to real estate developer D S Kulkarni, arrested on charges of allegedly cheating 2,500 investors to the tune of Rs 230 crore, were seized by Pune police today. Officials said that the worth of the vehicles, comprising five cars and a motorcycle, was being evaluated after which a report would be submitted in court in order to auction the vehicles to recover money. "On the directions of the court, further course of action pertaining to the auction will be taken," he said. Kulkarni and his wife were arrested from Delhi on February 17 under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors Act and the Indian Penal Code for allegedly duping investors. Kulkarni, who was remanded in police custody, had to be hospitalised after he complained of uneasiness in the lock-up.

Pak contacts Interpol to arrest Hussain Haqqani

Minor four-month pregnant after gang-rape

A 15-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Chimayu village has been found to be four-month pregnant after she was allegedly raped by three youths, police said today. The incident came into light after the victim complained of stomach ache, SHO, Charthawal Police Station, G C Sharma, said. "According to the complaint filed by the victim's father, the accused gang-raped the minor few months back and threatened her to not tell the incident to anybody," he said. Two of the accused have been arrested and a search is on to nab the third one, he said, adding the minor was sent for a medical examination.

Special courts set up to try MPs, MLAs in criminal cases

The Delhi High Court on Monday set up some special trial courts to deal with cases against elected Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs).The high court designated Special CBI Judge Arvind Kumar and Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal of the Patiala House Court to preside over the special courts.The case hearings will begin on 1 March.This step was taken in adherence to the Supreme Court order to expedite the procedure of case hearings against the MPs and MLAs.The high court has targeted to dispose of such cases within a year by handing over the cases to the special courts.

PWD scam: HC asks ACB to file status report of probe

The Delhi High Court today asked the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) to file a status report on its probe into a complaint against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and others in alleged irregularities in grant of contracts for roads and sewer lines. Justice S P Garg sought the report from the agency on a plea seeking transfer of the investigaton from the ACB to CBI and listed the matter for further hearing on April 19. The plea filed by one Rahul Sharma, the founder of NGO Roads Anti-Corruption Organisation, alleged that the state was wilfully negligent in this matter and the methodology adopted by ACB in the probe was illegal. "Though the information lodged by Sharma was disclosing commission of cognisable offence and also detailing the role of Arvind Kejriwal (chief minister) in the present case, despite that the state deliberately excluded his name from the FIR and violated the provisions of CrPC," the petition filed through advocate Kislay Pandey said. Son-in-law killed by gang in case of 'mistaken identity'

In a case of possible mistaken identity, an assistant professor of a private engineering college was hacked to death by a gang, which was targetting his realtor father-in-law, at his home at a nearby town today. The father in-law had allegedly encroached on some land. Police said the elderly man suffered minor injuries and was discharged from hospital after first aid. They said the gang entered the home at Palyamkottai this morning,hurled country bombs and sprinkled chilli powder and attacked Senthilkumar and his father-in-law with sickles. While the father-in-law escaped with minor injuries, Senthil Kumar suffered serious cut injuries and died at Palayamkottai government hospital without responding to treatment, police said. EC produces confidential documents against disqualified MLAs in HC

In a fresh twist to the hearing on 20 AAP MLAs' pleas against their disqualification in an office-of-profit case, the Election Commission of India (ECI) today produced before the Delhi High Court some confidential documents, saying these cannot be shared with the legislators. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Chander Shekhar was informed by the ECI counsel that they were handing certain documents including "personal notings" related to proceedings held in the poll panel. "We are claiming privilege over these confidential documents, so we cannot supply them to the petitioners (20 AAP MLAs)," poll panel's counsel Amit Sharma said, while producing the papers in a sealed cover before the bench. The bench asked the ECI counsel to take instruction whether the documents can be supplied to the legislators after concealing the privileged portions. Abducted toddler rescued within 48 hours in Delhi

The Delhi police rescued a kidnapped child within 48 hours and arrested three people in connection with the same on Monday.A two-and-half-year-old boy was kidnapped from Bawana area of Delhi.The CCTV footage revealed that a woman was involved in the kidnapping. After the investigation, the police found that Sonia (name changed) was behind the incident as she was found missing from her house at Ishwar Colony in Bawana.She was arrested from Anand Vihar, ISBT. During interrogation, she disclosed that she had stolen the boy Abhishek (name changed) and sold him to another lady namely Rajni for Rs 45,000. Police officer's wife dies of bullet injury

A 26-year-old woman, wife of a police officer posted in the chief minister's security, today died allegedly after receiving a bullet injury at her residence here, police said. Inquest proceedings have been initiated into the death of Neha Basson, who succumbed to bullet injuries at Government Medical College hospital, a police officer told PTI. It appeared the woman had received the bullet injury from her husband's service revolver, he said. The woman's husband, Inspector Vivek Basson, who is posted in CM security, he added. Information was received that a young woman was hit by a bullet at her residence near Ustad Mohalla in the heart of the city this afternoon and was rushed to GMC hospital by her relatives, a police officer said. It was not immediately clear how the woman received the bullet injury, he said. The autopsy of the deceased is being conducted at the hospital and the body would be handed over to legal heirs later, the officer said.

Bribery remarks: Complaint case, not FIR, filed against Kejriwal

The Election Commission today told the Delhi High Court that a complaint case against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was pending before a Goa court for his alleged bribery remarks during the January 2017 assembly polls there. The submission came in pursuance to the court's earlier direction on whether any FIR has been lodged, as the EC had previously stated that such an action has been taken. Justice Rekha Palli was informed by the counsel for EC that a complaint case was filed in pursuance to the poll panel's letter of January 29 last year directing the Chief Electoral Officer of Goa to take legal action or lodge an FIR against Kejriwal for his bribery remark at poll rallies in the state on January 7-8 last year. Musharraf treason case to be heard on March 8

A special tribunal in Pakistan will resume on March 8 the hearing of treason case against former military dictator Pervez Musharraf for imposing emergency rule in the country in 2007. Musharraf, 74, who left the country for Dubai in March 2016 , was declared a proclaimed absconder by the court in May 2016. The court also asked the government to confiscate his properties, including a farm house in suburbs of capital Islamabad.
