PNB scam: CBI seals Nirav Modi's farmhouse

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday sealed jeweller Nirav Modi's farm house.Covering an area of approximately 1.5 acres, the farm house is located in Alibagh, Maharashtra.There is a bunglow inside the farm house named Roapanya.Earlier, CBI had arrested a General Manager (GM) rank officer of Punjab National Bank (PNB), Rajesh Jindal, who was the Branch Head at PNB Brady House branch in Mumbai during August 2009 to May 2011.During Jindal's tenure at PNB Brady House branch, the practice of issuance of Letter of Undertakings (LOU) without sanctioned limits to Nirav Modi group firms had started.Jindal is presently posted as the General Manager Credit in New Delhi's PNB Head Office.Earlier on Tuesday, the CBI arrested the president of Firestar International Pvt Ltd, Vipul Ambani.The law enforcement body also arrested Kavita Mankikar, executive assistant and authorised signatory of the three accused firms.Arjun Patil, senior executive, Firestar group; Kapil Khandelwal, ...

Bengaluru pub brawl: MLA NA Haris'son sent to judicial custody

A local court in Bengaluru on Wednesday sent Congress MLA NA Haris's son, Mohammad Nalapad to judicial custody till March 7, in connection with the assault on a man at a pub.Nalapad, who confessed to thrashing and threatening a man at a pub in UB City on February 19, was arrested along with six others the next day.After the incident came to light, Nalapad, who is the General Secretary of Bengaluru District Youth Congress, was suspended from the party for six years.As per the sequence of events, the victim, Vidwathwas was having dinner at a restaurant in UB City when Mohammad Nalapad and his friends walked in at 11:30 p.m.The group reportedly told the victim, who had a plaster on one of his legs, to "sit properly".After a heated exchange of words, Nalapad and his friends attacked Vidwathwas. The victim was then rushed to the nearby Mallya Hospital for treatment, but the group reportedly followed him there and threatened him.

Journalist assaulted in Mumbai train station

A journalist in Mumbai was allegedly assaulted by some unknown men, when he was trying to board the local train.The journalist received head injuries, and was bleeding profusely, though the injuries are not serious in nature.A case has been registered at the Andheri police station against the perpetrators and some people have been arrested in this regard.On the basis of preliminary reports, it appears to be a case of a scuffle caused by on the spot argument between the journalist and the men. It does not appear to be a case of personal enmity or a calculated assault on the journalist.

CS Prakash had bruise on lower lip, says medical report

Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash had a "bruise" on his lower lip and there was "swelling" behind the ears, police today said citing his medical report. The medico legal case (MLC) report mentioned the nature of injuries sustained by the chief secretary in the alleged assault on him by a few AAP MLAs Monday night during a meeting at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence. Prakash was medically examined at Aruna Asaf Ali hospital yesterday. The report mentioned "swelling" behind both ears and cheek bone as well as "bruise" on the lower lip. "The medico-legal case (MLC) is a due process of investigation and we will work as per law," said a senior police officer. The Delhi Police today got a jolt with a court here rejecting its plea for custodial interrogation of AAP MLAs Amantullah Khan and Prakash Jarwal, arrested in connection with the "highly sensitive" case of alleged assault on Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash. The two MLAs were sent to judicial custody in Tihar Jail till tomorrow, when the court would hear their bail pleas, as the police sought time to reply on them. The court said the ground for judicial custody are justified as there are numerous cases against the accused MLAs. Metropolitan Magistrate Shefali Barnala Tandon directed the concerned Deputy Commissioner of Police to personally monitor the case as it is "highly sensitive". The court refused the plea of the Delhi Police to quiz them in custody for two days, saying that the legislators were ready to cooperate and join the investigation. Court discharges ex-Guj in-charge DGP Pandey in Ishrat case

A special CBI court today discharged former Gujarat in-charge DGP P P Pandey in the 2004 alleged fake encounter of Ishrat Jahan and three others, in which he was an accused. Special CBI court judge J K Pandya allowed Pandey's discharge application on the ground that there was no evidence against him related to the kidnapping and murder of Ishrat Jahan and three others. The CBI, which investigated the case, had accused Pandey, who then headed the Ahmedabad crime branch, of being involved in the alleged fake encounter. The court today said that no witnesses accused Pandey of murdering and kidnapping of the victims. It also said that the witnesses' evidences were contradictory as they gave different evidences to different investigating agencies. Family members injured in clash over harassment of girl in UP

A clash between two groups over an alleged incident of harassment of a girl during a marriage ceremony here left four of a family injured, police said today. They were attacked after they opposed four youths allegedly teasing the girl inside a marriage hall last evening, they said. A case was registered against accused Anshul, Himanshu, Sumit and Ravinder based on a complaint filed by Vipin Kumar, brother of the harassment victim, officials said, adding that all were absconding. Kumar was injured in the attack and had to be admitted to a local hospital, they added. In another incident, six people were taken to a hospital with minor injuries sustained in a clash over an alleged sexual harassment of a 17-year-old minor girl by a youth in Bhesani village in Shamli district yesterday, police said.

One arrested for murdering wife, cremating body in UP

One person was arrested after he cremated the body of his wife without informing the police or the woman's parents about her death in a village here, police said today. Pahel Singh was arrested on suspicions of murdering Puja and cremating her body in Rasulpur village under the Bhopa police station area last evening, they said. The body had already been cremated when police reached the spot, they added. According to Circle Officer Mohd Rizwan, a case was registered against Pahel Singh, his father Tejpal and mother Kamlesh. Pvt airline graft case: Court directs CBI to proceed against bankers

A special court has rejected a closure report of CBI giving clean chit to several bank officials in a case involving Paramount Airways Pvt Ltd and a former CMD of Oriental Insurance Company Ltd for allegedly causing loss of about Rs 442 crore to five public sector banks. The court said the chain of conspiracy and money trail was incomplete in the absence of the bankers and held that prima facie, there was sufficient material to make 32 officials of five public sector banks as accused. According to the CBI charge sheet filed in 2012, Paramount Airways Pvt Ltd (PAPL), its managing director M Thiagarajan, then CMD of Oriental Insurance Company Ltd (OICL) M Ramadoss and three other officers were accused of causing wrongful loss to the five banks and the insurance company, against which claims of Rs 442 crore were raised due to payment defaults by the airline. Car driven by Custom official knocks down 2 pedestrians, 1

A car driven by a senior Customs officials allegedly knocked down two pedestrians, resulting in the death of one person in suburban Mankhurd, police said today. Following the incident yesterday, Shaktivel Raju, who is Additional Commissioner of Customs was arrested, said Senior Police Inspector of Mankhurd Police Station Sanjay Vernekar. Raju was driving the car when it hit two pedestrians - Pandurang Pokhre (40) and Ashoke Bhandari when they had gone for a morning walk, the officer said. 2 held for attempting to kill elderly couple, stealing

Two persons, who were on the run for four years, were arrested for allegedly attempting to kill an elderly couple and looting valuables worth Rs 26 lakh in 2014, police said today. The duo - Pintu Hridayaram Nishad (26) and Mahesh Bunilal Nishad (33) - was apprehended by sleuths of the crime branch on charges of house-breaking, which took place on February 17 here, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Mukund Hatote told reporters. During interrogation, they confessed that they were involved in a crime, which they committed in the limits of Juhu police station in 2014, the officer said.
