Woman injured in acid attack in Kerala

A 22-year old woman teacher suffered serious burns when an unidentified person threw acid on her at nearby Kuttichal today, police said. She had been admitted to the government medical college hospital here. The woman was returning home from work late this evening when the motorcycle-borne person attacked her and fled the scene, police, quoting eyewitness accounts, said. Investigations were on to find out the culprit and the motive for the acid attack, they added.

Rotomac: ED notifies exit ports about Kothari

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today said it had notified all the land, sea and airports in the country to prevent the exit of the promoter of Rotomac pens, Vikram Kothari, and his family members from India, in connection with its money laundering probe into an alleged bank loan fraud of Rs 3,695 crore. The agency also conducted searches at multiple locations in Uttar Pradesh, including in Unnao and Kanpur, to gather evidence in the case. Official sources said that according to a preliminary probe, the loan amount "was not used for the intended purpose". They added that in order to ensure that the alleged defaulters, including Kothari, his wife Sadhna and son Rahul, did not flee the country, a Look-Out Circular (LOC) was issued and notified to the immigration authorities by the central probe agency. Financier robbed off Rs 2.84 lakh

A Chennai-based 35-year-old financier was robbed off Rs 2.84 lakh by a four-member gang in Pusad, police said today. The accused came on two motorbikes to the hotel, where the financier Anil Jain was staying and looted Rs 2.84 lakh from him, police officials said. They said that the accused barged into his room and looted the money on a gun-point. A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code was registered and a probe was on, the officials said.

ED attaches assets of former Patna DM

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday attached movable and immovable properties worth Rs 1.80 crore in the name of former Patna District Magistrate Pradeep Kumar.According to the ED, the properties were attached on the basis of charge sheets filed by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under various sections of the Indian Penal Code/Prevention of Corruption Act for indulging in criminal conspiracy (120B IPC), cheating, dishonestly inducing delivery of property (420 IPC), forgery of valuable security, using as genuine a forged document or electronic record (471 IPC) and criminal misconduct by a public servant (13 PC Act).Presently working as Divisional Commissioner of Santhal Pargana in Jharkhand, Kumar has been charge sheeted in the NRHM Scam, Procurement of Mobile Clinic and possession of disproportionate assets.During investigation it was found that Kumar amassed huge properties since his posting as District Magistrate of Patna, the ED said in a statement.Kumar, an IAS ...

Delhi Police head constable dies at hospital

A head constable of the Delhi Police, who was escorting an under-treatment prisoner at a north Delhi hospital , died under mysterious circumstances, police said today. Rajender Kumar, 49, was found with a bullet wound on his head, inside a ward of Rajan Babu Institute of Pulmonary Medicine and Tuberculosis (RBIPMT) at GTB Nagar where he was deployed to keep watch on the under trial prisoner Manoj, said a senior police officer. He was found motionless by one of his colleagues in the afternoon. The doctors declared him dead, he said. Kumar was posted with 3rd Battalion of the Delhi Armed Police that is responsible for escorting prisoners when they are out of jail for treatment, court appearances and other purposes. Man arrested in connection with theft of jewellery from train

An alleged member of a gang targeting passengers on board long distance trains has been caught and stolen jewelleries worth about Rs 60 lakh was recovered from him, police said today. The accused was caught in connection with a theft from a passenger travelling on the Ala Hazarat Express, at Old Delhi Railway station, on February 13, said Parwaiz Ahmad, DCP (Railways). Rajender, 35, was caught on a tip off, by a joint team of the New Delhi and Old Delhi railway police, from a park opposite to the Jalebi Chowk in Sutlanpuri, yesterday, he said. 'Resign and go' if unable to follow rule: Madras HC to officials

Lambasting the Tamil Nadu government for allowing constructions around temples in the state in violation of rules, the Madras High Court today asked officials to 'resign and go' if they are unable to follow them. "When the officials responsible to implement the rules are unable to do it, let them go. If they are unable to follow the directions let them resign and go," Justice N Kirubakaran observed. The judge stated this after perusing the report of the court-appointed advocate commissioner in 2013, pertaining to illegal constructions in around the famous Meenakshi temple at Madurai and Sri Ranganatha Swami temple at Srirangam. BSF jawan killed in Pak sniper fire at LoC in J&K

A BSF jawan was today killed after he was shot by a Pakistani sniper from across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Tangdhar, officials said. Constable S K Murmu (28) succumbed to the "critical" injury of the gun shot wound he suffered in the ceasefire violation incident, they said. He died at the Army hospital in Srinagar around 8:30 pm. The officials said that Murmu was deployed at a forward defended location (FDL) along the LoC in Karnah sector of the Tangdhar area, when a sniper shot hit him in the stomach around 4:30 pm. "He was initially evacuated on foot from the forward area and then taken to Srinagar in an Army helicopter. However, Murmu succumbed to the fatal sniper shot. He was shot at by the Pakistani forces," a senior officer said. The jawan, who joined the Border Security Force (BSF) in 2013, hails from the Jamui district in Bihar.

Auto-rickshaw driver held for cyber stalking woman

An auto-rickshaw driver, was today arrested from here on charge of cyber stalking a woman, police said. The accused D Vinod (24), was arrested by Cyber Cell for harassing a woman, by creating a WhatsAppandFacebook profile with her pictures and posting abusive comments, a release from Rachakonda Police Commissionerate said. Meghwal confident of passage of Bill for single tribunal on water disputes

Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal today expressedconfidence that a Bill that will pave way for the setting up of a single Tribunal to adjudicate all inter-state river water disputes will be passed in the second part of the Budget Session of Parliament beginning in March. There are different tribunals hearing disputes between states on the sharing of river waters. MP: Arrest warrant issued against Cong MLA in rape case

A court here today issued an arrest warrant against Congress MLA Hemant Katare for not appearing before it, despite several summonses, in connection with a rape-and-abduction case lodged against him earlier this month. Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Jyoti Dongre issued the warrant on an application filed by the local police. The court posted the matter for next hearing on March 19. On February 17, the police had announced a reward of Rs 10,000 for sharing information about Katare's whereabouts. The police had also announced a reward for Vikramjit Singh, an aide of the complainant in the case. Illegal confinement of girls:HC seeks CBI's reply on parents plea

The Delhi High Court today sought response of the Central Bureau of Investigation on a plea by parents of 48 girls who were sent to a children's home from an institution that is under investigation for alleged illegal confinement of young women. Justice S P Garg directed the CBI to file a status report about the number of girls at the Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya in Rohini area here, their ages and whether they were willing to return to their parents. The court asked the agency to give the report on or before March 5. It sought the reply of the authorities concerned on the plea which contended that the girls were illegally detained despite being adults and were being subjected to mental torture. The plea said the girls, who were lodged at the Minda Bal Gram in Alipur, were kept in painful conditions and were suffering from tremendous mental agony. HC lawyers on hunger strike to protest vacant posts

Upping their ante, striking lawyers of Orissa High Court today resorted to an indefinite relay hunger strike demanding filling up of vacant posts of judges. Along with the executive members of the High Court Bar Association led by its President Srikant Kumar Nayak, several other members sat on a hunger strike in front of the Association office here from 10.30 am to 5 pm. "As decided by the Association yesterday, no fresh case was filed in the Court on the day and the clients were requested not to appear before the benches to argue their own cases," said Association Secretary Satyabrata Mohanty. The lawyers are on strike since February 12, alleging that due to insufficient judges in the high court, the number of pending cases are mounting. 'Mahadalit' man killed for refusing to make liquor in Nawada

A man belonging to 'Mahadalit' community was beaten to death while another was badly injured by local goons when they refused to make liquor in Bihar's Nawada district today, police said. The incident occurred at Pansadwa village of Kauwakol police station area of the district when both refused to make illegal liquor, Kauwakol police station SHO Manoj Kumar said. The deceased has been identified as Nirav Manjhi (50) while Chhote Manjhi, who received serious injuries in the incident, is battling for life at a local hospital, Kumar said. Complete prohibition is in force in Bihar since April 2016 that bans manufacture, trade, sale, storage and consumption of liquor in the state. The goons allegedly indulged in manufacturing liquor illegally in the village, the SHO said adding that police have sent the body to sadar hospital for postmortem. Three cargo loaders of Mumbai airport held for mobile theft

Three cargo loaders at the city airport were arrested today for allegedly stealing mobile phones worth Rs 6.5 lakh, police said. Crime branch officials seized around 53 mobile phone handsets from the trio, an officer said. The trio were involved in the crime since the last 17 months, he said. HC asks Maha govt to reply on plea against plastic ban

The Bombay High Court today directed the Maharashtra government to file an affidavit, in response to a plea challenging the state's decision to ban the sale of plastic materials such as bags, plates, cups etc. The Maharashtra Plastic Manufacturers' Association has filed the plea, challenging a public notice and an order issued by the environment department of the state government on January 2, through which it sought to impose a ban on the manufacture, sale, distribution and storage of plastic materials like cups, spoons, plates, bags, forks and so on. A bench of justices A S Oka and P N Deshmukh asked the government to file an affidavit, stating by when it planned to implement the ban, within a week. The petition claimed that the order was arbitrary and that it was passed without following the principles of natural justice. It added that the order was also violative of the fundamental right of the petitioner association and its members to carry out business.

HC seeks police report on cheating case against Mehul Choksi

The Gujarat High Court today directed the police to submit before it the probe report in a cheating case lodged in April 2017 against Gitanjali Gems promoter Mehul Choksi. Gitanjali Gems is a sister concern of Nirav Modi companies which allegedly cheated the Punjab National Bank of Rs 11,400 crore. Justice A J Desai directed the Ahmedabad crime branch police to produce evidences collected in the case of cheating filed against Gitanjali Gems CMD Choksi and others on a plea moved by Choksi to quash the FIR. The court posted the matter for a further hearing on March 14 after public prosecutor Mitesh Amin submitted that the state government has taken cognisance of the matter and will publish advertisements in the newspapers appealing victims of the chit fund case to come forward. HC declines to hear plea for 2nd post-mortem of bodies found in Andhra tank

The Madras High Court today refused to entertain a plea, seeking a second post-mortem of the five bodies that were found in a tank in Andhra Pradesh. A bench headed by Justice C T Selvam declined to hear the plea filed by P Pugalenthi, a lawyer who heads a rights forum, and suggested that he approach the Andhra Pradesh High Court since the incident occurred in that state. The bodies of the five men, suspected to be woodcutters from Salem district, were found floating in a decomposed state in an irrigation tank at Vontimitta village, about 120 km from Tirupati, on February 18. Alleging that the post-mortem of the bodies was carried out hurriedly at the instance of the Andhra police, Pugalenthi contended before the court that there was no possibility of all the five drowning in the tank, considering its depth.
