The police has seized Rs 40.5 lakh in cash from a car and arrested a businessman and his son in this connection in Bargarh district. It was suspected that the cash was being sent to the Bijepur Assembly constituency where a by-election would be held on February 24, the Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Padmapur, Laxminarayan Panda, said. Both the ruling BJD and the opposition BJP accused each other of being involved in the incident, and using black money to motivate voters in the by-poll bound Bijepur Assembly segment. The businessman's car was intercepted near Mahulapalli during checking yesterday night, the SDPO said, adding, the police had a tip-off about the money being transported from Chhattisgarh. Four youths sustained stab injuries during a fight between two groups in a restaurant at south Delhi's Mehrauli, police said today. The injured were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre where two were stated to be in a critical condition, a senior police officer said. Both the groups belonged to the same locality in Mehrauli, he said. The fight broke out at 9 pm in a restaurant yesterday and the four youths suffered injuries, he said. A case under the charge of attempt to murder was registered and further investigation was underway, added the officer.
The Delhi Debts Recovery Tribunal (DRT) has restrained former CEO of Ranbaxy Laboratories and the co-owner of Fortis Healthcare, Malvinder Mohan Singh, from selling a posh property in Lutyen's Delhi and some other assets in a bank loan default case. A bench headed by presiding officer GVK Raju passed the interim direction on an application by Yes Bank seeking recovery of Rs 569.64 crore loan given to Oscar Investment Ltd. for which Singh was a guarantor. The Nagpur police today said that it had solved the killing of the mother and daughter of a journalist here, 12 hours after the crime was committed. Usha Kamble (50) and one-year-old Risha were killed on Saturday evening and their bodies were put in a gunny bag and thrown into a nullah at Bhadura in Dighori here at around 11 in the night, police said. Joint Commissioner of Police Shivaji Bodkhe told PTI that Ganesh Rambaran Shahu (26), a resident of Pawanputra Nagar area here, was arrested adding that the victim and Shahu had fought over chit fund money yesterday evening at the latter's house. In the course of the altercation, the woman fell from the stairs, after which Shahu slit her throat, Bodkhe said. He added that the toddler, who was with Kamble at the time, was killed by Shahu to stop her wails. "He later put the bodies in a sack and disposed it off in a nullah," Bodkhe said. A 19-year-old woman has filed a complaint with the police alleging rape by a youth from Himachal Pradesh here on the pretext of marriage after befriending her on Facebook. A case of rape was registered against the accused, a resident of Kullu, on the complaint of the woman and efforts are on to nab him, a police official said today. In her complaint, the woman has said that she had developed the friendship with the accused on Facebook about seven years ago and thereafter he lured her for marriage and made physical relations with her. She claimed that the youth has now refused to marry her, the officer said, adding that they have begun investigation.
The Second National Judicial Pay Commission (SNJPC) for the subordinate judiciary in the country would, most likely, submit its interim report to the Supreme Court next month, the commission's chairman Justice (retired) P Venkatrama Reddi said today. "Probably, the first part of the report, some interim report (pertaining to pay allowances and pensions), we will submit to the Supreme Court next month itself. We are doing our best to submit the interim report to the Supreme court next month," Reddi told reporters here. The SNJPC was constituted in May 2017 and the Centre issued a notification in November last year approving the Constitutional commission, he said. The Commission is to make its final recommendations within a period of 18 months from November last year, when the notification was issued. Brendan Cox said late last night he had acted inappropriately and would leave his positions at the Jo Cox Foundation and the More in Common charity. Both were started after his wife Jo Cox was shot and stabbed to death during the Brexit referendum in 2016. Brendan Cox said he wanted to apologize "deeply and unreservedly" for his past behavior. This came after the Mail on Sunday published reports alleging sexual misconduct on his part. He did say the newspaper's allegations were a "massive exaggeration." A group called AfriForum said today that Gerrie Nel, head of the group's private prosecuting unit, will go to court if state prosecutors decide not to bring charges against Zuma for alleged corruption in an arms deal in the 1990s, when he was deputy president. Protesters on Sunday torched a vehicle in Ahmadabad city over the death of Dalit activist Bhanubhai Vankar, who self-immolated himself over the Gujarat government's alleged failure to regularise land entitled to labourers.Vankar self-immolated himself on February 15 in Patan, and succumbed to his injuries on February 16.Vankar had been seeking physical possession of land that was allotted to Dalit families by the state government.He had last month written a letter to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, warning him of taking the step of self-immolation if the families were not allotted the land.

The CBI has opposed in the Bombay High Court a plea of builder Niranjan Hiranandani seeking to quash the charge sheet filed against him in 2010 in a criminal case of alleged non-payment of provident fund to the tune of Rs 9 crore. The central agency opposed the plea on the ground that Hiranandani was a key conspirator. The 61-year-old developer had approached the high court last week to quash and set aside the charge sheet filed against him by the CBI's Anti-Corruption wing in September 2010 under charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating and sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. In his plea, he claimed it was a vexatious prosecution and that there was no material to support allegations of him defrauding the provident fund office. Police today said the inspector attached to Kannagurichi Police station had been relieved from the station duty and placed on "wait list" (list of officials waiting for posting) on the orders of city police commissioner. Kerala police on Sunday arrested eight people in connection with the murder of a Youth Congress leader.M Suhaib was hacked to death on Monday at Thyroor in the Kannur district of Kerala. When Suhaib was having tea at a nearby teashop at around 11:30 pm at night, some people came in a speeding van and hurled a bomb at him.Later, the attackers brutally hacked Suhaib to death and fled from the spot.He was immediately brought to a city hospital in Kozhikkode where he was declared 'brought dead'.Along with Suhaib, two other Congress workers Riyas, 28, and Noushad, 36, were also injured in the attack.The Congress party has alleged the involvement of Communist Party of India- Marxist in the attack and later called for a strike on Tuesday against the killing.
