A lower court has sentenced six persons to life imprisonment for murdering a man, who had married a woman despite opposition from her family. The convicts include the mother-in-law of the deceased, R Krishna Kumar, who had fallen in love and married Indhira of his village in Pudukottai district in 2004, despite her family objecting to the marriage. According to the police, Kumar was hacked to death by his wife's relatives, including her brother, in 2007. Her brother and two others were arrested later. Following the high court's intervention, the case was transferred to the Crime Branch-CID in 2008. Subsequently, Indhira's mother Sellammal, her (Sellammal's) sister and two relatives were arrested and the chargesheet was filed in the case. District Additional Sessions Court judge M Sumathi Saipriya sentenced the six convicts to life yesterday. Sellammal's sister, who was also named as an accused in the case, died during the trial.
A teenage girl suffered 70 per cent burns after she was allegedly set ablaze by a 23-year-old man for rejecting his marriage proposal, the police said today. The horrific incident occurred near here yesterday when the 14-year-old girl, studying in the ninth standard, was returning home. The accused, Balamurugan, who had fled the spot after committing the crime, was arrested today, the police said. The accused had been pestering the girl to marry him and her parents had lodged a police complaint against him. The police had also warned him. Angered by the complaint, Balamurugan allegedly waylaid the girl, doused her with petrol and set her ablaze, the police said. The girl is admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital here.
BJP's Bhagalpur district Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC & ST) cell president was gunned down by unidentified miscreants here late last night, police said today. The victim Manoj Mandal (25) was shot dead while he was asleep in his home in his native village Khawaspur under Pirpainty police station, Kahalgaon Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ramanand Kumar Kaushal said. An unnamed FIR has been lodged with Pirpainty police station in this regard, the SDPO said adding that motive behind the killing is yet to be ascertained. An Indian-origin man in Singapore was today charged in a court with the murder of a fellow worker at a construction site, according to a media report. Saravanan Arimuram, 31, faces death penalty for the alleged murder of Sivakumar Perumal, 43, who suffered injuries to his face and chest on Thursday, and died later, The Straits Times reported. Arimuram allegedly got into a fight with Perumal, who was then driving a prime mover and he was a passenger. Apart from the two, an 18-year-old man was also travelling on the prime mover which crashed along Jurong Town Hall Road in the Singapore's suburb industrial estate. In a major haul, over four kg of psychotropic drug MDMA, worth more than Rs 25 crore, was today seized and two people were arrested near here, officials said. Methylenedioxy Methamphetamine (MDMA), a party drug, is commonly known as ecstasy. Excise department sleuths seized the contraband from a car during a vehicle check at Angamaly. Two people in the vehicle were arrested. A top official in the office of the Divisional Deputy Excise Commissioner said the two, who were coming from Palakkad, were allegedly attempting to smuggle the drug. The excise department was investigating if they were going to the Kochi International Airport to smuggle the drug to some international destination, he said. Police today recovered the mutilated body of a man from a workshop in the city, police said. The victim, identified as Gopal Moharana and a carpenter by profession, had wounds on his throat, hands and belly. His body was sent for postmortem, deputy commissioner of police Satyabrat Bhoi told reporters. The driver and the conductor of a milk van were killed when their vehicle rammed into a roadside stationary truck on the Grand Trunk road in Bihar's Gaya district today, the police said. Sherghati Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Upendra Kumar said that the incident occurred near Pathalkatti village when a milk van, which was on its way to Sherghati from Hazaribagh, rammed into a roadside stationary truck after the driver lost his control over the vehicle. Both the driver and the conductor died on the spot in the incident, SDPO said adding that the deceased were identified as driver Mohammad Munna (35) and conductor Mohammad Golden (30), both residents of Hazaribagh district. The police sent the bodies to the Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital, Gaya, for postmortem examination, the SDPO said.

At least 43 heavy vehicles used in illegal mining of minerals were seized and over Rs four lakh collected as penalty in a crackdown in Jajpur district, an official said today. The seizure was during raids carried out by four district-leval teams against illegal mining activities in different places in the district yesterday, he said adding the vehicles were carrying sand, mourm, laterite stone and black stone illegally. The teams had conducted surprise raids at several locations under the jurisdiction of Barachana, Dharmasala, Jajpur and Sukinda tehsils, he said. "Four teams comprising revenue and police officials conducted surprise raids at different illegal mining areas under four tehsils. A Delhi court refused to grant any relief to a man who was convicted for rash and negligent driving which resulted in the death of two kids, saying the world would never be the same for their parents. Special Judge Ashutosh Kumar dismissed the appeal of Uttar Pradesh resident Rohit against a magisterial court's order sentencing him to two years of jail and directed him to pay a compensation of Rs 50,000 to the kin of the victims. "It must have been very traumatic for the parents who lost their only two children because of rash and negligent driving of the appellant. The world will never be the same for them again. Thus, the appellant does not deserve lesser sentence than what has been awarded by the trial court," the court said. According to the prosecution, on November 27, 2006, Rohit while driving a TATA Sumo, jumped a red signal at Kesav Puram in north west Delhi and hit a Maruti van at a high speed. Five people, including two minors, were killed and 11 injured in a head-on collision between a sugarcane-laden tractor-trolley and an SUV on the Bisauli-Sahaswan road here, the police said today. The incident took place last night at Sahaswan police station area, SSP Chandra Prakash said. Driver of the SUV, Ram Singh (38), and passengers Roopmati (45), Usha Devi (20), Tanushri (4) and Chunnu (6) were killed on the spot, the SSP said. The 11 injured were admitted to the district hospital, from where three, whose condition was serious, were referred to Bareilly, the police officer said, adding the bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

Six auto-rickshaw owners from here have been booked on charges of fabricating the character certificate and seeking auto permits, police said today. According to a complaint lodged by officials from the Regional Transport Office, those applying for auto-rickshaw permits are required to provide the character certificates issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Branch), a senior police official said. However, during verification it was found that the certificates provided by the six auto-rickshaw owners were fake and had been fabricated, he said. A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code was registered yesterday at the Thane Nagar police station and a probe was underway, the officer said.
