Three arrested for beating cab driver to death on Mumbai road

Mumbai police have arrested three persons for allegedly beating a cab driver to death in a case of road rage. The incident had taken place on Monday evening. Police identified the accused from the CCTV footage from the area, an official said. While Imran Shaikh (19) and Abdul Wahab (21) were arrested yesterday, Bhondu Ali (22) was arrested today, said a senior official from the Shivaji Nagar police station. They were booked under section 302 (murder) of the IPC, the official said, adding that further probe was on. A cab driven by the victim Salim Shaikh (38) -- who worked for an app-based cab service -- brushed past the scooter on which the accused trio were riding near Bombay City Hospital in suburban Govandi on Monday evening, causing the scooter to overbalance. PNB files complaint with CBI alleging Rs 11,400 crore fraud

The CBI has received two complaints from the Punjab National Bank (PNB) against billionaire diamantaire Nirav Modi and a jewellery company alleging fraudulent transactions worth about Rs 11,400 crore, officials said today. Modi, whose jewellery creations are popular among global celebrities, may face a fresh CBI probe as the agency is looking at suitable legal action to be taken in the case. He is already being investigated by the CBI for alleged cheating and fraud involving Rs 280 crore at a PNB branch, the officials said. They said it had received two complaints from the PNB yesterday in which it was alleged that the bank had spotted fraudulent transactions worth over Rs 11,400 crore involving Modi and a jewellery company. Two killed after car hit their motorcycle

Two persons were killed and another injured today after a car rammed into their motorcycle on Kota-Ujjain road, around 20 kms away from here, police said. The car also hit three pedestrians leaving them injured, a police official said. The incident occurred this afternoon apparently after the driver of the car lost his control over the vehicle, Ghatiya police station in-charge Jairam Chavhan said. The deceased are identified as Bheru Singh (60) and Bhagwan (30). The injured person, who was also riding the motorcycle, is identified as Phul Singh, Chavan said, adding that he was admitted to a hospital in Ujjain. The three injured pedestrians were also admitted in the same hospital. The driver fled the spot after the incident leaving the car behind, he said. Police are trying to trace the owner of the car.

PNB fraud case not out-of-control, says finmin official

The finance ministry today sought to allay worries over the Rs 11,300-crore fraud case at Punjab National Bank, saying the case not "out-of-control" and it is taking action in this respect. "I dont think this is out of control or too big a worry at this point. That is my broad sense," Joint Secretary in Department of Financial Services Lok Rajan said on the sidelines of an event here. Earlier in the morning Punjab National Bank (PNB) disclosed that it has detected some fraudulent transactions with financial implication of USD 1.77 billion (about Rs 11,346 crore) and the matter has been referred to law enforcement agencies for the recovery. PNB finds fraud transactions of USD 1.77 bn

State-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) today said it has detected some fraudulent transactions with financial implication of USD 1.77 billion (about Rs 11,346 crore) and the matter has been referred to law enforcement agencies for the recovery. The bank has detected some fraudulent and unauthorised transactions (messages) in one of its branches in Mumbai for the benefit of a few select account holders with their apparent connivance, PNB said in a statement. Based on these transactions, other banks appear to have advanced money to these customers abroad, it said. In the bank these transactions are contingent in nature and liability arising out of these on the bank shall be decided based on the law and genuineness of underlying transactions. The quantum of such transactions is USD 1,771.69 million (approx), it said. The matter is already referred to law enforcement agencies to examine and book the culprits as per law of the land. Indian origin jailed for threatening to beat up wife

An Indian-origin man was today jailed for over an year threatening to kill his wife even if he has to go to prison for the crime. Ramachandran Maniam, 48, will be spending more than one year and two months behind bars, after admitting to criminal intimidation by threatening to harm his estranged wife, reported The Straits Times. As he had committed the offence in breach of his remission order for an earlier conviction, he was sentenced today to an enhanced punishment of 372 days in jail on top of two months' jail for criminal intimidation. Ramachandran was placed on the mandatory aftercare scheme from October 16-27 last year. He was housed at halfway house under the scheme for inmates released under the conditional remission system and deemed to be at higher risk of recidivism. The court heard that on October 19, Ramachandran went to look for his wife. Crime against women reduced by 12 pc in 2013-17: Kataria

Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria today said crime against women had reduced by 12 per cent in the state between 2013-17 and that Mahila Desks had been established in most police stations. The minister also said that Mahila police stations had been setup in 40 police districts of Rajasthan. Replying to a question in the Question Hour of the Rajasthan Assembly, Kataria said of the 861 police stations in the state, 786 had Mahila Desks to address issues related to women. Between 2013-17, there were 330 cases registered in Kota, 200 to 300 cases in six districts, 100-200 cases in 17 districts and up to 100 cases in 16 districts, he said. There was no requirement of a Mahila police station in Hanumangarh as the rate of crime against women had dropped significantly there in this period, Kataria said replying to a Supplementary Question. Kataria said that women patrol teams were constituted in districts. Swift action is taken when any case of a crime against a women .

NCB arrests Tanzanian man with drugs worth Rs 1 cr in Delhi

A 31-year-old Tanzanian man has been arrested here by the Narcotics Control Bureau for allegedly smuggling in heroin estimated to be worth Rs 1 crore, officials said today. Brayton N Lyimo was apprehended by the sleuths of the agency at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport yesterday night after he landed here from Mumbai. "The man was intercepted at the airport as the agency was working on some intelligence inputs on the activities of international drug cartels. "His contacts in Delhi and few other places are under our scanner," NCB Zonal Director Madho Singh said. Officials of the agency said Lyimo was carrying two packets of heroin, totaling 4.8 kg, in his registered baggage and had arrived in Mumbai yesterday from Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). He later took a flight for Delhi where he was intercepted by the NCB sleuths and arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, they said. Five held for bid to kidnap, molest girl on way to school

Three men have been arrested and two minors taken into custody after they allegedly tried to kidnap and molest a minor girl while she was on way to her school here, police said today. The accused, riding motorcycles, tried to stop the class 8 student while she was going to her school in the Vasai area on Monday. While one of the accused pointed a knife at the 13 -year-old girl, another one tried to drag her away, the district police said in a release. However, the girl managed to free herself from their clutches and escaped, the release said. Some passers-by reprimanded the accused who then fled on their vehicles, it said. Based on a complaint, the Manickpur police in Vasai yesterday arrested the three men. The other two accused, both aged 17, were also taken into custody, Manickpur police inspector Anil Patil said. The accused were booked under IPC sections 363 (kidnapping) and 354 (molestation), and relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences .

Two labourers die of asphyxiation while cleaning tank

Two labourers died of asphyxiation while cleaning the septic tank of a restaurant here, police said today. The deceased have been identified as Ramu (25) and Ravi (28). Police said the incident occurred at around 4 PM yesterday when the duo, hired by the restaurant on a contract basis, were attending to the clogged septic tank. Ramu had entered the tank to clean it while Ravi was outside to assist him. Some time later Ramu collapsed due to suffocation. not getting any response from him, his colleague also entered the tank and he too met the same fate, police said. Police and fire and Emergency services rushed to the spot on being informed, pulled out both of them and rushed them to a hospital, where they were declared brought dead. Police said the restaurant manager and caretaker have been arrested and a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder registered against them.

2 held with gold bars in body cavity at Silchar airport

Two Kolkata-bound passengers have been apprehended by the CISF at the Silchar airport in Assam for allegedly trying to smuggle gold bars worth about Rs 60 lakh by concealing them in body cavity. The incident took place early today when the personnel of the security force detected metal pieces in the body of two men, identified as K K Kakkar and J Lal, during frisking and they were subsequently taken for detailed checking. "During thorough checking, the passengers revealed that they were carrying six gold bars each (2 kgs in total) wrapped in balloons and kept in their rectum area. "The Kolkata-bound passengers and the seized 12 gold bars have been handed over to customs officials at the airport," a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) spokesperson said. The value of the seized gold is estimated to be Rs 60 lakh, he said.

Two-fold jump in salaries of 3 election commissioners

After Supreme Court and high court judges, the three election commissioners have received a nearly two-fold jump in their salary. The three commissioners, including the chief election commissioner, are entitled to a salary which is "equal to the salary of a judge of the Supreme Court", according to the provisions of a law governing their conditions of service. After the government notified the law hiking the salary of Supreme Court and high court judges on January 25, the Election Commission adopted the same, officials in the poll panel said. Now, the three commissioners, like the judges of the Supreme Court and chief justices of the high courts, will draw a monthly salary of Rs 2.50 lakh from the current Rs 90,000. The salary hike will come into effect retrospectively from January 1, 2016, and will also benefit former chief election commissioners and election commissioners. Suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorist arrested

The Delhi Police has arrested a suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorist who had been on the run since the 2008 Batla House encounter, a senior officer said today. Ariz Khan was arrested by the Delhi Police's Special Cell. Khan was present at Batla House, along with four others, and had managed to give police the slip during the encounter on September 19, 2008 in Delhi's Jamia Nagar, in which two Indian Mujahideen terrorists were killed and as many arrested. Encounter specialist and Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, who led the police action, was also killed during the operation. A trial court here in July 2013 had sentenced Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist Shahzad Ahmed to life imprisonment in connection with the Batla House encounter case. His appeal against the trial court's verdict has been pending in the high court.

Govt hospital staff beat man to death

A 32-year-old man died after allegedly being beaten by the staffers of a government hospital in southwest Delhi's Jaffarpur Kalan.Family members of the deceased alleged that Rao Tula Ram (RTR) Hospital staff beat the victim to death after he objected to the line of treatment given to his physically challenged wife, who was admitted in the hospital.However, according to reports, Medical Superintendent, RTR Hospital, Sangeeta Basu, rejected the allegation, saying, "We have checked the CCTV footage, and there was no episode of any kind of assault, as alleged by the family."A case has been registered in the connection.

The apex court, while stressing the need for use of technology in Juvenile Justice Boards (JJB) and Child Welfare Committees (CWC), said it was "disheartened" that there was an acute shortage of computers and peripherals in these bodies. Former MLA Dhature dies

Congress leader and former Maharashtra MLA Hafizbhai Dhature died of heart failure at a hospital here, family members said today. He was 77 and is survived by wife, a son and three daughters. Dhature suffered a heart attack on Monday and was admitted to a private hospital in Miraj. The former legislator died of heart failure last night, they said. The veteran Congress leader represented Miraj in this western Maharashtra district in the Assembly for one term.
