A dreaded gangster was Thursday arrested in connection with a 14-year-old case, in which a hotelier from Ulhasnagar in the district was shot dead, police said. The anti extortion cell (AEC) of Thane crime branch arrested the accused, Fazal Ur Rehman alias Ali Bashir Ali Shaikh (55), who was lodged in Sabarmati jail in a different case, and brought him to Thane, an official said. He was arrested for the murder of Rakesh Raman Rai alias Rakesh Shetty (39), inspector of the AEC, Rajkumar Kothmire, said. The incident had taken place late night on May 10, 2005 near Regency Park at Kalyan. The shooters had allegedly shot the victim from point blank range, he added. The Supreme Court on Thursday disposed of a plea of the kin of those killed along with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, challenging the Tamil Nadu government's 2014 decision to release seven convicts in the assassination case. A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna said that all relevant issues raised in the petition were decided by the 2015 constitution bench verdict of the apex court. "Having considered the matter, we are of the view that no live issue remains for adjudication in view of the Constitution bench judgment of this court in Union of India versus V Sriharan alias Murugan and others. In view of the above, the writ petition stands disposed of," the bench said. Four suspected drug peddlers have been arrested with contraband in two separate areas of Jammu city Thursday, police said. While patrolling near Pahari Mohalla in Jammu city, police apprehended three people roaming in the area in a suspicious manner, they said. While searching them, around 650 gm cannabis, 56 gm heroin and Rs 40,000 cash were seized following which they were arrested, a police official said. In another incident, an oil tanker was intercepted at Kunjwani area of the city and 5 kg poppy was seized following which the driver was arrested, police said. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Friday the issues relating to the Ayodhya's Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case. A 30-year-old man facing financial duress committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance after killing his three minor daughters on Thursday, police said. Deepak Gupta, a resident of Naye Sadak area here, gave his daughters drinks laced with poison, they said. He and his daughters Nibia (9) Advaita (7) and Riya (5) were rushed to a nearby divisional hospital by other family members. They were later shifted to the BHU trauma centre, where all four were declared brought dead by doctors. The bodies were sent for postmortem and a probe into the matter was underway, police added.

The Kyodo News service reported Thursday the Tokyo District Court rejected the appeal filed earlier in the day. The report could not be immediately confirmed. Deputy Chief Prosecutor Shin Kukimoto said Thursday limiting contact with Carole Ghosn was "an absolute necessity" because of risks of tampering with evidence. Five employees of a mobile phone manufacturing company here were arrested for allegedly stealing over 300 battery chargers worth Rs 2 lakh to sell them in the open market, police said Thursday. A complaint was made at the Phase 2 police station Wednesday by a Samsung official over suspicion that some company insiders were sneaking out battery chargers and selling them in market, a policeman said. "Based on this information, the police carried out a checking at the company after the duty hours got over yesterday and arrested five employees after 320 phone battery chargers were recovered from their possession. The estimated cost of all chargers recovered is Rs 2 lakh," Station House Officer (SHO), Phase 2, Farmood Ali Pundir said. Those arrested have been identified as Amit Kumar, Chandan, Niranjan, Sunil Yadav and Maruti, he said, adding they have previously also sneaked out chargers from the company. A 50-year-old farmer was found dead on a paddy heap at a procurement centre in Kamareddy district, police said Thursday. Prima facie it appeared that Gopal died of suspected sunstroke and was found dead by other farmers Wednesday morning on his farm produce, they said. Gopal sold his farm produce in the market three days ago and was waiting for transportation to send the commodity to the buyer. Under the blazing sun, he was guarding his paddy which was kept on the road. He was sleeping on the paddy in the nights. On Wednesday morning, members of his family arrived to the market and tried to awake up Gopal, but he had died in his sleep.
