The Delhi High Court has come to the aid of a woman who is set to remarry soon by waiving the cooling off period for divorce from her estranged husband. Justice Prateek Jalan noted that there does not appear to be any likelihood of reconciliation between the estranged couple and relied on a verdict of the Supreme Court which had ruled that divorce can be granted without the mandatory 18-month period of separation between the parties. The apex court had, in 2017, said that the six month "cooling off" period can be waived by the courts in cases of divorce through mutual consent. The high court allowed a petition by the woman for waiving the statutory period of six months under Section 13B(2) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. It set aside an order of a family court which had rejected the woman's application. The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) to declare the 2017 results for recruitment in central government jobs.A bench comprising Justices S A Bobde and Abdul Nazir also constituted a seven-member committee, headed by retired Supreme Court judge GS Singhvi, to suggest measures to make the conduct of entrance exams for jobs and admission in educational institutions foolproof.The panel would include former Infosys chairman Nandan Nilekani and scientist Vijay Bhatkar.Last month, the Supreme Court asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a detailed status report on the investigation into the 2017 SSC examination paper leak case.In its August 31, 2018 order, the court had stayed the 2017 results.

The Bombay High Court has directed the collector of Thane district in Maharashtra to conduct a survey of illegal constructions in Bhiwandi tehsil and initiate action of demolition of such structures. A division bench of Chief Justice Pradeep Nandrajog and Justice N M Jamdar last week also directed the Thane collector to take action against the officers who failed to stop the construction of such unauthorised structures. The order was passed on a public interest litigation filed by Bhiwandi resident Rahul Uttam Jogdand, who raised the issue of increasing number of illegal constructions coming up on agricultural land in the area. As per a report submitted by the secretary of Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority, there are around 20,000 illegal constructions in 60 villages of Bhiwandi tehsil, located around 33 km from Mumbai. Television actor Karan Oberoi, arrested on charges of raping and blackmailing a woman in suburban Oshiwara, was on Thursday remanded in 14-day judicial custody by a Mumbai court. Oberoi, 40, who acted in some television serials and appeared in commercials, was arrested on Sunday after the woman, who was in a relationship with him since 2016, complained to the Oshiwara Police that he allegedly raped her on the pretext of marrying her. The woman also alleged that he shot some objectionable videos of her and demanded money from her while threatening to release the clips, a police official earlier said. A 25-year-old married woman was found hanging from a tree in the Pedola forest area of Rajasthan's Jhalawar district, police said Thursday. The woman, identified as Sunita Tanwar, a resident of Doulatpura village, was found hanging at around 2.30 am Wednesday, they said. "She had left home on Tuesday morning following which her father and relatives approached the Dangipur police. Prima facie it is a case of suicide," DSP Dhanphul Singh said. He said on the basis of a complaint lodged by the woman's family members, a case was registered against her husband Bhuriya Tanwar and six of his family for subjecting her to cruelty and abetting suicide under Sections 306 and 498-A of the Indian Penal Code. The woman's family alleged that she was being tortured by her husband and the in-laws due to which she took the extreme step, police said. The Supreme Court Thursday dismissed a plea seeking direction to the Centre and the Election Commission to debar Congress President Rahul Gandhi from contesting Lok Sabha elections till the issue of his citizenship is decided. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi rejected the contention of the petitioners, who said that in a form along with the annual data of a UK-based company in 2005-06, it was allegedly mentioned that Rahul Gandhi is a British citizen. "If some company in some form mentions his nationality as British, does he become a British citizen," the bench also comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna told the petitioners. A 30-year-old labourer allegedly raped a 5-year-old girl in Rajasthan's Chittorgarh district, police said Thursday. The accused, who worked at a construction site near the girl's residence, took her to a secluded spot and committed the crime on Wednesday. The accused Dalu Bheel was arrested Thursday and case registered against him under IPC section 376 and sections of the POSCO Act, SP, Chittorgarh, Anil Kayal said. Chittorgarh Kotwali police station in-charge Shailendra Singh said Bheel lured the girl when she had gone to a nearby shop in Gandhi Nagar area. The accused was arrested following a complaint lodged by the victim's parents. Medical examination of the girl has been conducted.

A Delhi court Thursday issued fresh summons against David Nigel John Syms, an alleged middleman and business partner of British national Christian Michel, in the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper case. Special judge Arvind Kumar summoned Syms, named as an accused in the supplementary charge sheet, to appear before the court. A charge sheet was also filed against Syms and two firms -- Global Services FZE and Global Traders. Syms and Michel are both directors of the two firms. Michel was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on December 22 last year after his extradition from Dubai. He is among the three alleged middlemen being probed in the chopper scam by the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation. The others are Guido Haschke and Carlo Gerosa.
