Chinese court holds off ruling on Canadian's death penalty appeal

A Chinese court adjourned a hearing on a Canadian man's appeal against his death sentence for drug smuggling without a decision Thursday in a case that has deepened a diplomatic spat between Beijing and Ottawa. Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, 36, was sentenced to death in January after a court deemed his previous 15-year prison sentence too lenient. Gauri Lankesh killing: SIT denies reports linking Sadhvi Pragya

The special investigation team probing the journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh murder case Thursday denied a media report about BJP MP candidate from Bhopal Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur's involvement in the crime. An English daily Thursday reported that there was a possibility of the Sadhvi's link with the murder. The SIT issued an official statement, saying it did not find her involvement at any stage of investigation nor find her name mentioned in the charge sheet. Supreme Court dismisses petition on Rahul Gandhi's alleged UK citizenship

The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a petition seeking a bar on Congress President Rahul Gandhi from contesting the Lok Sabha polls over his alleged British nationality.A three-judge bench of the Apex Court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi and also comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna dismissed the petition filed by Jai Bhagwan Goyal."We dismiss the petition. SC Collegium reiterates names of Justices Bose, Bopanna for elevation to apex court

The Supreme Court Collegium has rejected government's objections and reiterated its recommendation to elevate Justices Aniruddha Bose and A S Bopanna to the apex court, observing nothing adverse has been found regarding their competence, conduct or integrity. The collegium has also recommended names of Justices B R Gavai and Surya Kant for elevation to the apex court. The two resolutions of the Collegium were made public on the apex court's website on Thursday. According to the website a five-member Collegium headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi had met on Wednesday and deliberated on the issue of elevation of the four high court judges. Village sarpanch's husband among 3 held for taking bribe

Three people, including the husband of a village head, were arrested in Maharashtra's Thane district for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a man to help him in a property matter, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) said. Nagaon grampanchayat official Udayraj Shelke (36) and the village sarpanch's husband Prabhakar Madavi (42) allegedly demanded Rs 50,000 from the man, who owned a 'chawl' (old style tenement), to help him in a tax related issue, the ACB said in a release. The man agreed to pay the amount and at the same time lodged a complaint with the ACB, it said. The anti-graft agency laid a trap and caught one Dileep Deshmukh (27) on Wednesday while he was accepting Rs 50,000 on behalf of the other two accused at the Nagaon panchayat office, the release said. The ACB said when the complainant went to pay the money, the accused increased the demand to Rs 1 lakh and accepted Rs 50,000 as the first installment. Woman held for lifting 5-day-old infant from Pollachi hospital

A 50-yr-old woman was arrested on Thursday for lifting a five-day-old infant from a government hospital here on May 5.The accused has been identified as Mariamma, a resident of Udmalpet. According to the police, the infant belongs to a tribal couple who lives in Narikalpathi village near Annamalai."As per the parents of the infant, the accused met them in the hospital and told them that her husband had been admitted in the male ward of the same hospital. Woman alleges man raped her and chopped off hair

A 23-year-old woman working in the film industry has alleged that a man raped her on the pretext of marriage and forcibly chopped off her hair after they had a fight during a visit to Goa, a police official said. Based on the woman's complaint, the Thane police in Maharashtra on Wednesday booked the man, identified as Amit Shelar, a resident of Wangani area here, he said. A 23-year-old woman in Thane district of Maharashtra has alleged that her husband divorced her by sending a 'triple talaq' message on her mobile phone, police said on Thursday. Bhoiwada police station's senior inspector Kalyan Karpe said they received a complaint from the woman on Monday and were seeking a legal opinion on it. The victim, who is physically disabled, in her complaint said she got married to a man from Kalyan town here on May 18, 2014.
