Woman killed by husband in Punjab

A woman was allegedly killed by her husband here, police said today. According to a statement of the woman's brother, her sister was married on December 14, 2017, but a few days after the marriage, the man started harassing her, they said. He said that he came to know about her sister's death yesterday, the police said. The woman's brother said that she had injuries on her neck and stomach and alleged that his sister was killed by her husband, they said. Mandi Gobindgarh station house officer Sukhbir Singh said on the statement of the deceased's brother, the police have registered a case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the man, who is at large, and have started investigation. After conducting post-mortem, the body was handed over to the relatives of the deceased, he said.

108 nabbed in 90 cases of attacks on journalists in 2015-17

As many as 108 people were arrested in 90 cases of attacks on journalists across the country in 2015-17, the Rajya Sabha was informed today. Union minister of State for Home Hansraj Ahir said that the data was compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for the last three years. He said that in 2017, there were 15 cases of attacks on journalists in which 26 people were arrested. Last year, the highest 22 people were arrested in Rajasthan in three such cases while in Tripura, one person was arrested in three cases of attacks on journalists, the minister said. In 2016, he said that 41 people were arrested in 47 such cases -- the highest of which were reported from Madhya Pradesh where 12 people were arrested in 41 cases. There were six cases of attacks on journalists in Andhra Pradesh in 2016 in which nine people were arrested and five cases in Tripura where four people were arrested. Pakistan arrests 2 suspects in murder of 4-year-old girl

Pakistani police have arrested two teenagers, including a close relative, for their involvement in the alleged rape and murder of a four-year-old girl in the country's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, triggering massive protests. The minor Mardan girl was found dead in a sugarcane field in January. The prime suspect, 15-year-old Muhammad Nabi, worked in a local restaurant and was also a close relative of the deceased. He has confessed to his crimes, Inspector General (IG) Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Salahuddin Mehsud said today. Addressing a press conference, Mehsud said during interrogation that the suspects confessed to trying to sexually molest the girl in the sugarcane field prior to strangling her to death. LeT suspect in 2000 Red Fort attack case gets bail

A Delhi court today granted bail to Bilal Ahmed Kawa, an LeT suspect arrested in the 2000 Red Fort attack case, noting that except one, all other co-accused have either been acquitted or discharged. Additional Sessions Judge Sidharth Sharma noted that the other accused acquitted or discharged by the trial court and the Delhi High Court, were facing more serious charges than Kawa. The court granted the relief to Kawa on furnishing of a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and a surety of the same amount, and directed him not to hamper the probe. Kawa was arrested from Terminal-3 of the Delhi airport on January 10 during a joint operation by the Delhi Police and the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), and currently was in judicial custody. In his bail plea, Kawa had claimed that no purpose would be served by keeping him in custody further. Father held for raping 3-yr-old stepdaughter

The Pune police on Wednesday arrested a man in connection with the rape of his 3-year-old stepdaughter in Warje.The incident came to light after the mother of the victim registered a case against her husband on Tuesday.As per the registered complaint, the accused was drunk and wanted to have sex with his wife but she denied it. Offended by his wife, he took away his stepdaughter with him. After the wife found her daughter unwell, she immediately took her to the hospital.A medical examination had revealed that she had been raped.The accused was booked under the Indian Penal Code 376,363,323 and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences POSCO Act.

1987 espionage case: Court acquits retired govt officer

A former senior government officer accused of leaking secret defence documents has been acquitted in a 31-year-old espionage case by a Delhi court which said the CBI had failed to establish that they were classified "secret" documents. The court absolved N W Nerurkar, who was working as an advisor to the Department of Electronics under the Centre in 1987, and another person, Aditya Kumar Jajodia, in the case and said the agency had failed to prove a conspiracy angle. The two were acquitted of the offences of criminal conspiracy under the IPC and penalties for spying and wrongful communication of information under the Official Secrets Act. The CBI had filed a case on April 17, 1987, after it received a complaint from a courier company in Delhi that certain secret documents related to defence matters were being dispatched by the accused. NIA arrests fifth LeT operator

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on February 5 arrested a 22-year-old youth pertaining to activities of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).Abdul Samad, who is a resident of Bukkanpur Village in Uttarakhand was produced before the Special Court NIA on February 6."He is the fifth accused person arrested in this case. The other four accused arrested in this case include Shaikh Abdul Naeem, resident of Aurangabad; Dhannu Raja, resident of Saraiya; Touseef Ahmed Malik resident of Chandgam, Pulwama; and Mahfooz Alam resident of Gopalganj, Bihar," stated a press release by NIA.It also informed that Samad is "one of the leading hawala operators operating in the area of Muzaffarnagar, Deoband and Roorkee"."He was acting as the conduit of the LeT financier based in the Saudi Arabia, through his cousin based there," said the NIA.

Malayala Manorama editor hails HC decision staying gag order

A gag order issued by a lower court in Kerala restraining the media from publishing news involving the son of a legislator was against the basic principles of the Constitution, Malayala Manorama Chief Editor Mammen Mathew said here today. Mathew hailed the decision of the Kerala High Court to stay the interim order recently issued by the lower court. In his petition filed in the High Court, Mathew had submitted that the sub-court had no powers under the Code of Civil Procedure to gag the media from reporting the details of the case. The Sub-Court judge of Karunagapally had issued the order on January 3, imposing restrictions on the media from publishing any defamatory statements against Chavara MLA Vijayan Pillai's son Sreejith. Girl dies allegedly after being slapped by teacher in UP

An 11-year-old girl died today allegedly after being slapped by a teacher of a private school here two days earlier, police said. An FIR was registered against Rajni Upadhyay on charges of culpable homicide and voluntarily causing hurt, Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar said. The family members of the girl, who was a student of class five in the school in Rasda area, alleged that the teacher slapped her on February 5 due to which she fainted. She was later admitted to the hospital where she died today, they said. They also staged a protest outside the school today with the body of the girl, demanding action against the teacher. Police is probing the matter, the SP said.

Police: Man put dismembered wife in suitcase, set it ablaze

Investigators believe a homeless man killed his wife in an abandoned restaurant, chopped up her body, stuffed it into a suitcase and then calmly rode with it aboard a train before he burned her remains in a parking lot, Los Angeles police said. After Valentino Gutierrez killed his wife last week in a shuttered restaurant in Pasadena, he dismembered her body, stuffed her remains into a large suitcase and boarded a light-rail train at a nearby station, Deputy Chief Justin Eisenberg said. Gutierrez, 56, who was charged with murder and arson, didn't draw any suspicion on the train and hopped aboard his bicycle after he exited the train. With the suitcase in tow, he peddled from a train station to the parking lot of a Home Depot in Los Angeles, where he set the suitcase ablaze. Detectives still haven't identified a motive in the case and coroner's officials have been unable to identify the burned remains. But police believe the victim was Gutierrez's wife, 31-year-old Tiana .

Ambulance driver attacked by unidentified miscreants in Odisha

An ambulance driver has been seriously injured after being shot at by unidentified miscreants in Odisha's Jajpur district, police said today. The incident took place at Panikoili area on NH 5 when the ambulance was carrying a patient from Bhadrak to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack yesterday evening, the police said. Though the exact reason behind the attack is yet to be ascertained, past enmity is suspected to have led to the incident, the police said. The driver identified as Jamir Khan, who sustained bullet injuries on his right leg, was first admitted to a local hospital and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. The National Investigation Agency has arrested an alleged hawala operator from Uttarakhand in connection with its probe into the activities of Pakistan- based Lashker-e-Taiba in India, an official spokesperson said here today. Abdul Samad, the fifth person arrested in the case, was nabbed in Haridwar yesterday and brought to Delhi where he was produced before a designated court. Court sends Indrani Mukerjea to judicial custody

A special court here today sent Indrani Mukerjea, a prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, to 14 days judicial custody in connection with a case related to INX Media. Special CBI Judge Sunil Rana remanded Indrani to judicial custody after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said she was not required for further custodial interrogation in this case. Indrani, who was produced before the court after two-day CBI custody ended, will be taken to Mumbai today itself. Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram's son Karti's name has also cropped up in the case, which relates to Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval granted in 2007 for receipt of funds by INX Media. The Law Ministry has said it has no record spelling out the legal action which can be taken against those forcing a citizen to chant "Bharat mata ki jai". The case pertains to one RTI applicant Mohammed Irfan Quadri who had sought to know from the ministry whether there is any legal obligation of a citizen to chant "Bharat mata ki jai" and whether a citizen can take legal action against those forcing him to chant this slogan among others. Laundry shop owner stabbed to death

A laundry shop owner was allegedly stabbed to death by three unidentified persons in the Kharghar area of Navi Mumbai, police said today. Manoj Kanojia (35) was going home after closing his shop late last night when the three persons came attacked him with a knife, killing him on the spot, a police official said. The accused then fled from the spot, he said. The motive behind the killing was yet to be ascertained, he said. BSF jawan murders wife, commits suicide

A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan hanged himself after allegedly murdering his wife in Haryana's Rewari.The BSF jawan, Jaiprakash allegedly killed his wife by slitting her throat over some family dispute.Jaiprakash, who was posted in Noida, came home on leave when the incident took place.Police have registered a case and a probe is underway, investigative officer Jay Prakash told ANI.As of now, the bodies have been sent to the hospital for autopsy.
