Court affirms USD 25 million Trump University settlement

A federal appeals court cleared the way for students who claim they were duped by the now- defunct Trump University to get most of their money back. The USD 25 million settlement, approved in March, had been threatened by a lone objector, Florida lawyer and Trump University attendee Sherri Simpson, who wanted to opt out and take President Donald Trump to court on her own. Terror charge dropped against man on trial over Paris attacks

Prosecutors sought a four-year jail term today for a man who hired out his apartment to two Islamic State jihadists after the 2015 Paris attacks, but they said there was insufficient evidence to convict him on terror charges. Jawad Bendaoud, who was nicknamed the "Daesh (Islamic State) landlord" in the French media, has been on trial since January 24 accused of harbouring the ringleader of the team of gunmen who killed 130 people in the French capital in November 2015. Bendaoud, a drug dealer, rented out one of his grimy apartments north of Paris to top Islamic State (IS) extremist Abdelhamid Abaaoud and an accomplice, Chakib Akrouh. The two men hid there and plotted more bloodshed in the days after the atrocity. Prosecutors initially claimed that Bendaoud knew he was helping to hide terrorists, but the 31-year-old denied it throughout, saying he was simply making money and was a cocaine-sniffing womaniser, not a religious fundamentalist. He is on trial along with ...

US judge says 'Chapo' Guzman jury will remain anonymous

The jury in the trial in New York of notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman will remain anonymous for their safety, a US judge has ruled. He has twice escaped prison in Mexico and has been held in solitary confinement in New York since being extradited to the United States a year ago. The US district attorney for the eastern district of New York, based in Brooklyn, has presented "strong and credible reasons to believe that the jury needs protection," Cogan wrote. The indictment alleges that Guzman "employed 'sicarios' or hit men who carried out hundreds of acts of violence, including murders, assaults and kidnappings," he said. Based on the indictment, "it seems likely that the trial evidence will depict a pattern by ..
