'Suspect arrested after gun attack on foreigners in Italy'

Italian police said they have arrested a man suspected of opening fire on foreigners from a vehicle in central Italy today. Media reported six people were injured, four of them seriously, in the incident in the town of Macerata. Police said "the wounded persons are of foreign nationality".

Standing Committee not convinced with charges against Sharjeel

The head of the Senate Standing Committee on Sports has expressed doubts over involvement of Test batsman Sharjeel Khan in spot-fixing during last year's Pakistan Super League (PSL). Dr. Ashok Kumar while presiding over a hearing in which Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials were in attendance said that the Board must produce evidence on basis of which it says Sharjeel was guilty of corruption. "We have been told time and again that Sharjeel is innocent and he has not been treated justly by you," Kumar told Subhan Ahmed, the PCBs chief operating officer. Subhan insisted that the Board had all the evidence on basis of which the anti-corruption tribunal of the board had banned him and Khalid Latif for five years. He informed the senators that the appeals of both the Pakistani batsmen had also been dismissed by an appellate tribunal. CDR case: Woman detective sent to police custody till Feb 7

A court here today sent a woman private detective, who was arrested for her alleged involvement in illegal procurement of call detail records (CDR), to police custody till February 7. Rajani Pandit (54), who is said to be the country's first woman private detective, was arrested by the Thane Crime Branch officials yesterday. She was produced before Judicial Magistrate First Class S L Gupta today. The crime branch sought her custody, saying it needed to probe if more people were involved in the racket. According to the police, Pandit's name had cropped up after four private detectives, arrested earlier in connection with the case, revealed her involvement. The four detectives, whom the police identified as Makesh Pandian (42), Prashant Palekar (49), Jigar Makwana (35) and Samresh Jha (32) alias Pratik Mohpal, were arrested on January 24 from the Kalwa township here. Kashmiri students assault: Three of six accused arrested

Three people were arrested on Saturday in connection with the alleged assault on two Kashmiri students by a mob in Mahendergarh."Total six people are accused in incident of assault on two Kashmiri youth in Mahendergarh out of which three people have been arrested and three others identified on the basis of a CCTV footage," Kamaldeep, Superintendent of Police (SP), Mahendergarh told media.The investigation into the assault is currently underway, police told.Meanwhile, Mahendragarh District Commissioner Garima Mittal also assured medical help to the victims.Two Kashmiri students, enrolled in Central University of Haryana, were allegedly beaten up by a mob in Mahendergarh on Friday.The students were being followed when they left the mosque after offering Namaz.Earlier in the day, Haryana Police took cognizance of the incident and lodged an FIR after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti called for an investigation into the incident and strict action against the perpetrators.

Robbers use social media to lure man into trap; 3 arrested

Police have arrested three persons in connection with a robbery in the city last month where the victim was lured into a trap through a Facebook friend request by a woman. The property cell of Mumbai Crime Branch arrested Jabbar Salim Khan (19), Salman Sheikh (37) and Sheikh Shah Shamsuddin (18) in Shivajinagar in suburban Govandi yesterday, a senior police official said. Hitendra Thakur, the complainant, received a friend request on Facebook from a young woman a month ago. Thakur accepted the request and the two started chatting online. The woman also sent him her pictures. On January 16, she said she wanted to meet him and asked him to come to a spot near the Indian Oil Company plant in Govandi. When Thakur reached there, five-six persons surrounded him and beat him with cricket bat, stumps, sticks and an iron rod. They took the jewellery and other valuables worth Rs Rs 5.92 lakh which he was carrying, and fled. A case of robbery was registered with Deonar police, and .

Cop accused of molesting women police personnel suspended

A police officer attached to the Thane Police Commissionerate has been suspended for allegedly molesting fellow women police personnel, an official said today. The accused, Namdeo Shinde, a Reserve Police Inspector, was suspended following orders given by Thane Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh on February 1 in this regard. "There were several complaints against Shinde relating to molestation of women police personnel. An investigation was conducted into the complaints and after a detailed report, an offence was registered against him," Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said. Shinde was booked by Thane Nagar Police on January 24 under IPC sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354 (d) (stalking), 506 (criminal intimidation), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), she added. "On February 1, Thane Police Commissioner issued his suspension orders," Narkar said.

Odisha government has given additional charge of Information and Public Relations department to Energy secretary Hemant Sharma. Sharma has been appointed as the I & PR department head after Surendra Kumar become the new Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Odisha, officials said. Besides the new assignment, Sharma also handles additional charge as CMD GRIDCO and CMD OPTCL. Surendra Kumar, a 1993 Batch of IAS, replaced D N Gupta, a 1989 Batch IAS as the CEO of Odisha. Vice-chancellor of Bharathiar University in Coimbatore was arrested on Saturday on the charges of accepting a bribe of Rs 30 lakh from a job-aspirant.A Ganapathi was arrested by a team of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) after he was caught accepting the bribe from one Suresh, who was seeking the post of assistant professor.As per reports, Suresh had earlier complained to police regarding the demand for the bribe.On the basis of the complaint, DVAC had laid out a trap and caught the vice chancellor red-handed with Rs 1 lakh in cash and a cheque of Rs 29 lakh.Ganapathi was appointed the vice-chancellor of Bharathiar University in March 2016.

Farmer hacked to death in Kota over share of irrigation water

A farmer died after a fight with four people allegedly over irrigation water in Jhadol village of Kota district today, following which the accused were booked, the police said. Ramniwas Gujar (26) was irrigating his agriculture land when four people of the same village, furious over supplying their share of water to his land, hacked him to death, SHO of Etawa police station Sanjay Royal said. The agriculture land of Gujar and the four accused were adjacent to each other, the police official said. The four absconding accused have been booked for murder and efforts are on to nab them, the SHO said, adding the body was handed over to the family members after post-mortem.

J&K govt okays withdrawal of stone-pelting cases against 9,730

Jammu and Kashmir government has approved withdrawal of cases registered against 9,730 people involved in stone-pelting incidents, including first-time offenders, between 2008 and 2017, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said today. The government action to withdraw 1,745 cases is subject to "certain conditions" and is based on recommendations of a committee constituted to look into the matter, Mufti said. She said her government has also recommended to give amnesty to more than 4,000 people, who are said to be involved in minor incidents of stone pelting over the past two years. In a written reply to a question in the Assembly, Mufti did not disclose the particulars of first-time offenders due to security considerations for them and their families. However, she said 3,773 cases were registered in 2016 and 2017, leading to the arrest of 11,290 people, of whom 233 remained untraced. CBI moves application in trial court for further probe in

The CBI has moved an application before a Delhi court seeking a direction to allow it to go for further probe into the Rs 64 crore Bofors payoff case, saying the agency had come across fresh material and evidence. The application was moved before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ashu Garg on February 1, a day before the CBI filed a petition challenging the May 31, 2005 order of the Delhi High Court discharging all accused persons in the case. The agency had also informed the apex court about the filing of the application in the trial court which has posted it for further deliberations on February 17. Having amended the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), the Congress and the BJP had saved themselves from prosecution as both the parties had received huge contributions from foreign companies, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury alleged today. Yechury and his party have challenged the Centre's decision in the Supreme Court on issuing electoral bonds to cleanup corporate fundings to the political parties. The apex court has sought the Centre's response on the petition. 2 brothers given 10 yrs' RI for attempting to murder kin

Two brothers were today sentenced to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment by a district court here for attempting to murder a relative over two years ago. Additional District Judge Amar Pal Singh awarded rigorous imprisonment of 10 years with fine of Rs 10,000 on Ramveer and Bhupendra, Assistant District Government Counsel Nand Kumar Tiwari said. Narrating the prosecution, he said, Pushpa, from Indrawali, was married to Ramveer, from Adda Karab, in 2010. The wife was, however, thrown out of the house by the husband and his brother, who accused her of being incapable of bearing a child. A 38-year-old man allegedly killed his brother with an iron rod after he found him in a compromising position with his wife at their home in Talera area in Bundi district, police said today. Man kills woman, sister after marriage proposal is rejected

An engineering graduate killed a woman and her cousin at their residence in Bulandshahr district after the woman spurned his marriage proposal, a senior police official said today. Ankit, a resident of Dhakoli village, also burnt the bodies of Sheelu, 23, and her cousin Shivani at their home in neighbouring Bahpur village on Thursday, SSP Muniraj G said. According to the SSP, Ankit visited Sheelu's residence on Thursday and proposed her for marriage, but she rejected the proposal. Ankit then strangulated her to death. Since Shivani witnessed the incident, he also killed her with a motorcycle clutch wire. Ankit then took out petrol from his motorbike and set the bodies on fire, Muniraj G said.
