A sessions court here has taken strong objection to a magisterial court's verdict sentencing a man to six months imprisonment in a rash driving case, saying the judgement was passed "in a very casual manner without applying judicial mind." Special Judge Virender Bhat quashed the orders convicting and sentencing the man for causing the death of a person by negligence, noting that the metropolitan magistrate had also wrongly recorded the date of the alleged incident. It noted that while the FIR mentions the date of accident as December 3, 2008, the magistrate referred to the month of incident as November in one order and August in another. The group -- five Britons, two Canadians, a Norwegian, a New Zealander and a Dutch national -- were arrested on Thursday during a party at a private villa in Siem Reap, the gateway to the famed ruins of Angkor Wat. The defendants, aged between 19 and 31, were charged by a Siem Reap court with producing pornographic pictures and materials, which carries a maximum one-year sentence. An FIR has been registered against a BJP leader and 15 others for allegedly beating an executive engineer of the power department to force him to withdraw a power theft case, police said today. The FIR was registered against BJP district president Harish Shakya and 15 others at Civil Lines police station yesterday for allegedly beating executive engineer Vijendra Singh and creating ruckus in the power department over the case, police said. A leader of the Gulf drug cartel has been killed along with three of his associates in a clash with marines in Mexico's northern border city of Reynosa. The government of Tamaulipas state said today that Humberto Loza Mendez died over the weekend in the clash. Loza Mendez and his three companions were believed to be members of a faction of the Gulf cartel who were fighting turf battles with other factions. Authorities had offered a reward of 2 million pesos (about USD 108,000) for Loza Mendez, who was also known as Steven and "Betillo." The government said Loza Mendoza was one of the drug gang leaders who had caused much of the violence in Reynosa, which has been hit by running gun battles and street blockades.

A 17-year-old boy was shot dead in south Delhi's Neb Sarai area, police said today. The incident took place last night when Sahil and his friends were sitting on the terrace of a stitching centre in Tigri, they said. The victim received a call and went out to attend it. He was in no time surrounded by a group of persons, one of whom shot him in his stomach and thigh, police said. Sahil was rushed to a hospital where he died during treatment, they said. A man, presumed to be a juvenile, has been detained, police said, adding his age was being verified. It is suspected that the killing was a fallout of a quarrel between Sahil's friend and his neighbour. Sahil had intervened in the matter and had threatened to teach the other party a lesson which enraged them and they decided to exact revenge, police added.

An eight-month-old baby girl was raped allegedly by her cousin in northwest Delhi's Netaji Subhash Place, police said today. The accused has been arrested, they said. The 28-year-old confessed to raping the baby yesterday under the influence of alcohol, said a senior police officer. The girl's parents used to go out for work and leave their daughter in the custody of their sister-in-law. Since it was a Sunday, their sister-in-law's son was at home, he said. When he saw that his mother was not around, the accused allegedly forced himself on the baby, police said. When the girl's mother, who works as a maid, returned home at around 12.30 pm, she saw blood stains on her daughter's clothes and informed her husband. The baby was rushed to a hospital where it was found that she had been sexually assaulted, police said. Subsequently, the police were informed and a case was registered. The baby underwent a surgery today and her condition is stable, they added.
The chief metropolitan magistrate (CMM) today remanded 10 accused, including a prominent builder, in one-day police custody in connection with the seizure of nearly Rs 97 crore in demonetised notes. CMM Shabistan Aquil allowed only a day's police custody rejecting the police's plea for seven-day remand, and directed the police to produce all the accused before the court at 5 pm tomorrow. The accused, including noted builder Anand Khatri, were arrested in connection with the seizure of nearly Rs 97 crore in demonetised currency notes from the builder's ancestral house in Swaroop Nagar on January 16 last. Meanwhile, a group of lawyers smeared black ink on the builder's face and assaulted some of the accused when they were brought to the court today.

A Russian court today jailed a woman for four years after she sold her newborn son for 166 euros to buy a plane ticket, court sources said. The 28-year-old woman, originally from Uzbekistan, arranged with an Uzbek couple to buy the infant before it was born in October 2016, investigators said. The transaction was completed in October, and the woman bought the ticket to a central Asian destination soon afterward, according to a spokesman of the court in St Petersburg. The buyers were both sentenced to three years in prison.

Three persons were today injured during stone pelting between two groups on the premises of the sessions court here, police said. Four vehicles were also damaged in the incident, a police official said. Shaikh Imran Shaikh Nazir alias Imran Mehndi was produced in the court, where he is being tried for alleged murder of corporator Salim Qureshi in 2012, the officer said. According to the officer, supporters of Mehndi and Qureshi were present in the court premises. Irked over the "misleading statements" made by self-styled Godman Nithyananda, the Madras High Court today warned that it would issue an arrest warrant against him if he failed to rectify the wrongs by January 31. Justice R Mahadevan made the observation while hearing a plea by M Jagathalapradhapan, seeking a direction to the Tamil Nadu government to take appropriate action against Nithyananda and protect the Madurai Adheenam (Mutt head). Nithyananda was briefly appointed to head the ancient Saivite mutt in October, 2012. The petitioner also sought a direction from the court to permanently prevent Nithyananda from interfering in the affairs of the mutt.
