The air intelligence unit of the Mumbai Customs today arrested a South Korean national for allegedly smuggling 15 kilograms of gold worth Rs 4.15 crore. "We have seized 15 kg of gold from a South Korean passenger, who arrived from Hong Kong at the Mumbai International airport," said a customs official. The official said personal search of the passenger Kim Youngjin resulted in the discovery of gold. Kim smuggled the gold in pockets of a specially stitched white-coloured cloth jacket. The jacket had 18 pockets, the official said, adding 15 gold bars each weighing one kilogram were found inside the apparel.
The year 2017 saw a significant drop of nearly 27 per cent in award of death penalty by sessions courts across the country, a report published by the National Law University (NLU) said. The report titled 'Death Penalty in India, Annual Statistics for the year 2017' said that in 2016, 149 persons were sentenced to death, while only 109 convicts were awarded capital punishment in 2017. Out of the 109 death punishments awarded by sessions courts last year, the high courts commuted 53 cases and acquitted 35 persons, it said. However, the report also showed an increase in number of convicts sent to gallows for murders involving sexual violence in the year 2017. It said 43 convicts were awarded death for murders involving sexual violence in 2017, which is 19 more than the year before. If those responsible for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots had been punished back then, India would have been different now, the Delhi High Court today said, while asking the police to take action against those involved in the recent attacks on properties of lawyers. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar observed that the lack of punishment in such cases signifies the "beginning of the rot" in the system. "If those responsible for 1984 riots had been punished, India would have been different," the bench said and expressed concern over the safety of the common man on the street if senior lawyers were being attacked. When the bench was informed that the police was in the process of lodging FIRs in connection with the incidents, that occurred on January 4, 8 and 22, the bench questioned the response time and asked it to expedite the forensic analysis of the evidence gathered from the site of the attacks. Fast-food major McDonald's today moved the Delhi High Court against its single judge's order dismissing the company's plea challenging a show-cause notice issued to it by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) on a contempt plea filed by its estranged Indian partner Vikram Bakshi. The single judge had on January 9 rejected the fast-food major's plea, saying the grievances raised by it were a result of "unfounded apprehensions" that the NCLT had prejudged the issue and that it "reflects paranoia rather than substance". The appeal was listed for hearing before a bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and A K Chawla, one of whom recused from the matter. The petition has been sent to the Acting Chief Justice who will now decide which bench should hear the matter. The Anti-Corruption Bureau today registered a case against three persons, including a town planner in the local civic body, for alleged irregularities in allotting a petrol pump. Inspector Anil Honrao of the Thane unit of the ACB said that a case under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code was taken against YS Reddy, former deputy director, town planning of the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation, petrol pump owner Girish Kamdar and architect Vipul Adia. The ACB official said that between June 2012 and July 2015, the three allegedly connived to get permission for Kamdar's petrol pump despite this not being in conformation with Development Control Rules. He said that the case was registered at Valiv police station in Palghar near here and further investigations were underway. He added that no arrests had been made in the case.
The Supreme Court today said that absconding businesswoman Ritika Awasty, currently residing in London, will have to face the "wrath of law" and it will take "all possible steps" to get her back. Awasty, a promoter of Bush Foods Overseas Pvt Ltd, is facing trial in Uttar Pradesh on charges of cheating, forgery and criminal breach of trust, but she has been evading arrest after she was allowed to go to London. The top court said that it will leave no stone unturned to bring back the businesswoman, stressing she cannot be allowed to get away after breaching the court's order. "We will take all steps possible to get her back. This may be hell for her... A couple today launched a dharna at the SCB Medical College and Hospital here alleging that their newborn boy was replaced with a girl and demanding that their baby be returned to them, police said. One Madhusmita Mohapatra, wife of Prahallad of Jajpur district had yesterday alleged that her newborn baby boy child was replaced with a girl child by the hospital authorities, the police said. Refusing to accept the girl child as her own, Madhusmita lodged a written complaint at the Manglabg police station here demanding a DNA test to ascertain the truth. According to police, Madhusmita was admitted in the hospital a fortnight ago and on January 26, she delivered the baby. She claimed that she had delivered a boy but the hospital authorities handed her a girl child, the police said. "We will not leave the hospital till we get back our newborn child", the couple said.
A man has been arrested for allegedly robbing and killing 75-year-old woman after entering her residence in northwest Delhi's Shalimar Bagh posing as a plumber, the police said today. On January 26, the body of Raj Rani Grover was found at her home with her neck slit and certain jewellery missing, said. During investigation, it emerged that the woman had called two plumbers for repairing a water motor pump, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Aslam Khan said. The two plumbers were interrogated and it was revealed that another man, posing as a plumber and electrician, had joined them, the officer said. Two foreign nationals were today arrested from suburban Juhu with 70 grams of cocaine worth about Rs 3.5 lakh, police said. Officials said that the two are nationals of Cte d'Ivoire and were arrested from the Juhu Chowpatty area. The two have claimed that they got cocaine from a supplier in the area and were trying to sell it, officials informed. A probe was underway, said police, adding that they were looking out for the supplier.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued fresh summons to Karti Chidambaram, son of senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, in connection with the INX Media money laundering case. Official sources said Karti has been asked to depose before the investigating officer (IO) of the case on February 2. He was earlier grilled by the agency in the case on January 18. Mystery shrouds the death of a 29-year old software engineer from Andhra Pradesh who fell from an elevated ramp at the domestic airport here today. Chaitanya, hailing from Vijayawada, fell from the ramp near gate no.4 of the domestic departure terminal and rushed to a government hospital where he was declared brought dead, police said. The elevated ramp is used especially by vehicles to reach the departure lounge situated at the second floor level to the ground area. The victim was said to have an e-booking for his travel to Bengaluru this morning and police were verifying it. A prosecution witness in the 2013 Shil-Daighar building collapse case today told a local court that illegal constructions were rampant in the premises and officials of the civic body were informed about it. The witness Sharad Patil deposed before District Judge V V Bambarde, who is hearing the case. In the Shil-Daighar building collapse in April 2013, 74 people were killed while over 60 injured. Patil informed the court that he had repeatedly brought to the notice of the senior officials of the Thane Municipal Corporation about the rampant illegal constructions in the Lucky Compound premise located in the Shil-Daighar area. The officials, however, did not respond, Patil told the judge. The main witness in the case told the court last week that he had warned the civic authorities about the impending danger due to the construction of substandard and unauthorised structure.
Fighting between gangs at a prison in Brazil's northeastern Ceara state left 10 dead early today, state law enforcement authorities said. "A fight began between rival groups of inmates, resulting in fatalities," a spokesman for the justice secretary said. Guards had retaken control of the facility, he said. The bloodshed took place in the Itapaje Public Prison, about 78 miles (125 km) from the state capital Fortaleza. On Saturday, at least 14 people were gunned down at a nightclub in Fortaleza. Local media reported that the massacre, conducted by armed men who arrived in three cars, was related to disputes between rival drug traffickers. A man allegedly killed his father and buried the body in their house at Badgundri village in Kalahandi district, police said today. Though the incident took place 28 days ago, the police today recovered the decomposed body of the father identified as Jagannath Bag (65). The matter came to light when the neighbours drew attention of the police about Jagannath not seen for many days. The deceased man's son Navidutta (35) was absconding, police said adding that the motive of the crime was not yet ascertained. On the night of January 2 there was altercation between them and being reprimanded by his father the furious son allegedly murdered his father by a sharp edged weapon, police said. A court here today sentenced four members of a family to life imprisonment in a dowry death case. Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADJ) (II) Kuashalesh Kumar passed the order convicting the four persons, to life imprisonment after finding them guilty of murdering one Manju Devi for dowry. The four sentenced to life imprisonment included the victim's husband Ganesh Sao, father-in-law Baleshwar Sao, mother-in-law Bachi Devi and brother-in-law Dineshwar Sao. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on each of them for destruction of evidence in the case, Public Prosecutor Devanand Prasad said. As per the FIR, Manju Devi, who got married in 2013 to Ganesh Sao of Narhat Bazar area under the Narhat police station of Nawada district, was constantly tortured and was burnt to death for her failure to meet her in-laws' demand for Rs 1 lakh as dowry on November 21, 2014. The victim's maternal uncle Babban Sao had lodged an FIR with the Narhat police station of the district .
