Tribal girl gangraped; threatened not to file complaint

A 16-year old tribal girl was allegedly gangraped in Madhya Pradesh's Betul district and threatened by locals not to file a police complaint, an official said today. The Class 11 student and her family were also offered a compromise to prevent her from filing the complaint against the accused, he s0aid. However, the girl finally managed to reach neighbouring Harda district, around 125 kms from Betul, and filed a complaint with police last evening, almost two weeks after the incident, the official said. The teenager was allegedly raped by five persons at Hardadadu village in Betul on January 11, Harda's Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar Singh said. The accused offered the victim a lift to her school on their motorcycles and then took her to an isolated place where they allegedly offered her a sedative-laced drink and raped her, Singh said. Lalu, Mishra sentenced to 5-yr-jail term in another Fodder scam case

In connection with another fodder scam case, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad and former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra were sentenced to five-year imprisonment by a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Ranchi on Wednesday.The two convicts have also been fined Rs. 5 lakh.Special CBI court judge S.S. Prasad pronounced the quantum of sentence in the case, which pertains to the embezzlement of Rs 33.67 crore from Chaibasa district treasury during 1992-93.Former Bihar CM Jagannath Mishra, acquitted in one of the fodder scam cases in December last year, was pronounced guilty in this matter.Lalu is currently lodged in the Birsa Munda Jail in Ranchi after being convicted for 3.5 years on December 23, 2017. The case pertained to the fraudulent withdrawal of funds from Deoghar treasury.The Chaibasa Treasury case is the third case in the fodder scam in which Lalu Prasad has been found guilty.

For poor, registration of FIR impossible: Delhi HC

It is "impossible for the poor". This is how an annoyed Delhi High Court bench termed the non-registration of an FIR in a case of a missing woman. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar expressed anguish when it found that no FIR was lodged by the police despite a woman's complaint that her daughter has been missing from her in-laws' house since June 2016. The bench took note of the letter written to it by the woman explaining the ordeal suffered by her daughter before she went missing after she was harassed by her in-laws. In her letter, the woman has also alleged that her daughter was beaten up for bringing less dowry. Moved by the contents of the letter, the bench expressed unhappiness over the lack of action by Delhi Police and said "it discloses a hopeless state of affairs that even after a complaint was filed in this regard, the police has failed to lodge a case". Earlier in the day, CBI judge SS Prasad pronounced Prasad and Mishra guilty in the case pertaining to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 37.62 crore from Chaibasa treasury in the 1990s. SP leader booked for making controversial remark against UP CM

An FIR has been registered against an SP leader and former MP for his alleged controversial remark against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The FIR was registered yesterday at Dariyabad police station on a complaint by Hindu Yuva Vahini district in-charge Ravi Singh, who has alleged that Kamla Prasad Rawat had made a controversial statement against the chief minister, police said. Singh alleged that Rawat's statement has hurt the feelings of the people. A Pakistan embassy official in Austria has gone missing along with some sensitive documents.The Pakistani Army official, resident of Sara-i-Kharboza, was appointed as a clerk at the Pakistani embassy in Austria. Lalu convicted in third fodder scam case

A special CBI court here today convicted Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad in the third fodder scam case pertaining to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 37.62 crore from the Chaibasa treasury in the 1990s. CBI judge SS Prasad also found another former chief minister Jagannath Mishra and others guilty in the case. Former Bihar minister Vidyasagar Nishad, ex-Bihar Assembly PAC chief Jagdish Sharma, former MLAs Dhruv Bhagat and R K Rana and three ex-IAS officers were also among the 50 persons who were convicted. The quantum of sentence is yet to be announced. The 69-year-old Prasad is currently lodged in the Birsa Munda Jail here in connection with another fodder scam case. Delhi HC to hear plea of 8 AAP MLAs against disqualification

A Delhi High Court judge will hear later in the day the plea of eight AAP MLAs against their disqualification for holding office of profit. Justice Vibhu Bakhru said he will hear the pleas of the MLAs, challenging the Centre's notification which had disqualified 20 legislators, after lunch. Observing the crowd in his courtroom before taking up the matter, the judge said he was unable to conduct hearing of other matters. The court was jam-packed with the eight AAP MLAs and their supporters and some senior members of the party besides scribes and counsel for the legislators. Bawana fire: Court allows 5-day police custody of accused

A Delhi court has sent the owner of the firecracker storage unit in Bawana area here, where 17 people were killed in a massive blaze, to five-day police custody. Metropolitan Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh allowed the police custody of accused Manoj Jain, 49, who was arrested on January 21 in connection with the fire tragedy which took place on January 20. A probe revealed it was a factory of "cold firecrackers" used in stage shows and Holi celebrations, the police had said. The fire had started in the storage unit on the ground floor of the two-storey building and ripped through the structure. Of the 17 killed, ten were women. A man and woman were also injured. Police said an FIR had been registered under Indian Penal Code sections relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible material. The maximum punishment under the sections is 10 years.

Rajiv Gandhi assassination case: SC issues notice to CBI

The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with a plea filed by A. G. Perarivalan, a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.Alleging a larger conspiracy in the matter, the plea filed by Perarivalan sought a probe in the case.A three-judge bench of the Apex Court yesterday gave the Centre three months to consider the letter by Tamil Nadu government to release the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.The letter was written on March 2, 2016, seeking the Centre's nod for the decision to release the convicts.Perarivalan is serving life imprisonment, along with Murugan and Santhan, the other two convicts in the same case.He was arrested on June 11, 1991, from Periyar Thidal, Chennai by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers.Perarivalan, who was earlier given death penalty, was finally commuted to life term imprisonment after the Supreme Court's verdict on February 18, 2014.

Two cops in Navi Mumbai suspended for dereliction of duty

The Navi Mumbai police commissioner has suspended a senior inspector and a sub-inspector for alleged dereliction of duty. Turbhe MIDC's senior inspector Ramchandra Deshmukh was suspended for alleged irregularities in probe into a case where he registered an offence to benefit and favour the complainants, the Navi Mumbai police said in a release issued last night. Besides, sub-inspector Sanjay Yadav, who was the investigating officer in an economic offences case, allegedly arrested a builder in a haste, pressurised him, demanded Rs 5 crore from him and also illegally detained his son, it said. The two were placed under suspension as their acts were not in keeping with the discipline of the police department and maligned its image, the release added.
