Rajiv case: Convict in SC seeks recall of its conviction order

The Supreme Court today asked the CBI to respond to a plea filed by one of the convicts in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's assassination case seeking recall of the apex court's May 1999 order upholding his conviction. A bench comprising Justices Ranjan Gogoi and R Banumathi asked the probe agency to file its response to the application filed by convict A G Perarivalan within three weeks and posted the matter for hearing on February 21. In its May 1999 order, the apex court had upheld the death sentence of four convicts-- Perarivalan, Murugan, Santham and Nalini in the assassination case. However, in April 2000, the Tamil Nadu governor commuted the death sentence of Nalini on the basis of state government's recommendation and an appeal by former Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Later the top court had on February 18, 2014 commuted the death sentence of Perarivalan to life imprisonment, along with two other condemned prisoners -- Santhan and Murugan -- on grounds of .

Expecting arrest, Hafiz Saeed moves court

CBI files FIR in Sreejeev death case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday registered an FIR in connection with the death of 27-year-old Sreejeev, who died in police custody in May 2014.Sreejeev's brother Sreejith has been staging an indefinite protest in front of the Secretariat seeking justice for his kin.Sreejith has been demanding a CBI inquiry into his brother's death.Sreejiv, died in a Thiruvananthapuram hospital, two days after he was taken into custody on charges of theft.The police claimed that he committed suicide after being taken into custody by consuming poison.Sreejiv's brother alleged that the police took his brother to its custody the day before a woman he was believed to be in a relationship with was getting married.The victim's brother said that the police arrested his brother at the behest of the woman's relative, who was a policeman.

Patiala House Court gets first permanent national flag

A 50-feet high tricolour was today unfurled at Patiala House District Court premises by Delhi High Court Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal. The flag, which will fly permanently, is the first in a trial court across the country, said the New Delhi Bar Association (NDBA). NDBA secretary Neeraj said the flag was installed by the Patiala House Courts at the request of the bar. The work was carried out by the Central Public Works Department. Delhi High Court Justices Manmohan and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal were also present at the event.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today extended her wishes to all Kanyashree girls on the occasion of the National Girl Child Day. She said the Kanyashree scheme has become an international model. "Today is the National Girl Child Day. We are proud of our Kanyashree girls. Our scheme for the girl child is an international model now. My best wishes to all," Banerjee wrote on her Twitter handle this morning. National girl child day is celebrated every year on January 24 as a national observance day for the girl child. The Kanyashree scheme of the state government aims at ensuring that girls do not drop out from schools and delay their marriages till at least the age of 18. The scheme has two cash transfer components - an annual incentive of Rs 750 and one-time grant of Rs 25,000 to be paid after a girl turns 18.

Fodder scam: Verdict in third case involving Lalu, today

A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court is expected to pronounce verdict in another fodder scam case on Wednesday.The court through its verdict will decide the fate of 56 accused people, including Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad and former Bihar chief minister Jagannath Mishra.The case pertained to the embezzlement of Rs 33.67 crore from Chaibasa district treasury during 1992-93.Lalu is currently lodged in the Birsa Munda Jail in Ranchi after being convicted for 3.5 years on December 23, 2017. The case pertained to the Deoghar treasury.The Chaibasa Treasury case will be the third case in which Lalu Yadav and Jagannth Mishra are accused.

The Congress on Wednesday called for a state-wide Bandh to protest against the suicide of an alleged gang-rape victim in Kunduli village of Odisha's Koraput district.The Congress workers also blocked railway tracks at Bhubaneswar railway station.A class IX girl committed suicide on Monday after being allegedly gang-raped by four security personnel in Koraput district in October last year.The incident triggered a massive outrage across the state.In November last year, the girl attempted to kill herself, after which Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik ordered a judicial probe into the incident.

Singapore Airlines crew member held at Delhi Airport

Customs officials at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport arrested a crew member of Singapore Airlines with 1048 grams of gold, worth Rs more than Rs.31 lakhs."The Officers of Air Customs Preventive IGI Airport, New Delhi intercepted a Singapore national (crew member of Singapore airlines) on January 22," read an official note.The passenger was carrying 1048 grams of gold ( one piece of yellow metal in the shape of chain weighing 749 grams and one piece yellow metal bar weighing 299 grams) that has been recovered, it added.During interrogation, the passenger admitted to carrying some equal amount of gold in the same form.The gold bars have been seized under section 110 of Customs Act, 1962 and the passenger has been arrested under the provisions of Section 104 of the Customs Act 1962.An investigation is underway on the matter.

Rajiv Gandhi assassination case: SC to hear Perarivalan's plea

The Supreme Court will on Wednesday hear the plea filed by A. G. Perarivalan, a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, seeking a probe into the matter, with an allegation of a larger conspiracy behind it.A three-judge bench of the Apex Court yesterday gave the Centre three months to conside the letter by Tamil Nadu government to release the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.The letter was written on March 2, 2016, seeking the Centre's nod for the decision to release the convicts.Earlier in November last year, the Supreme Court had asked the Centre if it is willing to set Perarivalan free.Perarivalan is on life imprisonment, along with Murugan and Santhan, the other two convicts in the same case.He was arrested on June 11, 1991, from Periyar Thidal, Chennai by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers.Perarivalan, who was earlier given death penalty, was finally commuted to life term imprisonment after the Supreme Court's verdict on February 18, ...

Kasur rape-murder accused held

The person, accused of rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl in Kasur, has been caught, Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Tuesday.Addressing a press conference in Lahore, Shehbaz said, "His name is Mohammad Imran. Bihar: 'Sex with minor wife to be considered rape'

The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Bihar's Bagaha district has directed all the Station House Officers (SHO) to consider cases involving physical relationship with wife below 18-year-old as rape.The senior police official has also asked to take stern action against such criminals.This comes in accordance of Supreme Court's amendment of Exception 2 of Section 375 of Indian Panel Code (IPC).In October last year, in a landmark decision, the Supreme Court ruled that a man indulging in sex with his wife aged between 15 to 18 years could be prosecuted for rape on a complaint by her.The top court had also mentioned that the age of consent can't be lower than18.

Assam: CBI arrests RPF official on bribery charges

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested a Sub-Inspector, Railway Protection Force, Assam's Simuluguri for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 6,500/- from a complainant.A case was registered under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, on the allegations that the sub-inspector demanded a bribe of Rs. 10,000 for releasing complainant's vehicle, which had hit barricade of railway crossing at Bihubari Road, Simuluguri, said an official statement.The sub-inspector was later produced in a special CBI court in Guwahati.

2 Indians plead guilty to smuggling phony cigarettes into US

Two Indians and an Indian-based company today pleaded guilty to conspiring to smuggle counterfeit cigarettes into the United States. Federal prosecutors said the counterfeit cigarettes bore "substantially indistinguishable" trade name and marks of the American brand of Newport cigarettes. Abhishek Shukla and Harish Shabhai Panchal each face up to five years in jail and USD 2,50,000 in fines followed by supervised release of up to five years. The Indian-based company, Jubilee Tobacco Industries Corp, faces a fine of up to USD 5,00,000. In its Plea Agreement, the company agreed to forfeit USD 3,00,000 to the US. Sentencing in the case is scheduled for February 12. The three pleaded guilty to conspiring with the intent to defraud and mislead, sell and cause the sale and dispensing of a counterfeit tobacco product (cigarettes), the prosecutors said. Cong, BJP call for shutdown over girl's suicide

Opposition BJP and the Congress today slammed the BJD government in Odisha over the alleged suicide of a girl who had claimed to have been raped by "four men in uniform", staging separate demonstrations and calling for a state-wide shutdown tomorrow. A day after the minor tribal girl ended her life in Koraput, Congress gave called for dawn-to-dusk bandh across the state, while the BJP announced its decision to observe a 12-hour strike from 6 AM to 6 PM. Man sentenced for smuggling king cobras in potato chip cans

A California man was sentenced to five months in federal prison for smuggling three highly venomous king cobra snakes through the mail in potato chip canisters. In a plea agreement, Rodrigo Franco acknowledged smuggling another 20 cobras into Los Angeles, but he said they all died in transit. He also said he tried to mail protected turtles from the United States to Hong Kong, but that package was intercepted by federal agents. "Reptiles are my passion," the 34-year-old, ex-auto mechanic wrote to Judge George H. Wu, who also sentenced Franco to two years of supervised release on Monday. The three king cobras each about two feet (just over half a meter) long were found last March when Customs and Border Protection officers inspected a package that was mailed from Hong Kong, prosecutors said. There were also three albino Chinese soft-shelled turtles in the package, authorities said. Federal agents removed the cobras but delivered the turtles to Franco's home in Monterey .
