Pak apex court bars top cop from fleeing over fake encounter

Pakistan's Supreme Court today barred from leaving the country a top police officer who has been put under suspension after a probe committee found him guilty of staging a fake encounter and killing a budding model along with three other suspected Taliban militants. Senior Superintendent of Police Rao Anwar and another policeman were suspended after an uproar on the social media as friends and relatives of Naqeebullah Mehsud, 27, who hailed from North Waziristan, disputed the claims that he was a commander of the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The committee found that Mehsud had a shop in Sohrab Goth area in North Waziristan and was looking for a career in modelling and acting. Mehsud and three militants were gunned down by a raiding party led by Anwar on January 13 on the outskirts of Karachi with the police claiming that they were all TTP members. Victims' relatives and friends shared several Facebook pictures, showing him as a dashing man fond of modelling .

SC to continue hearing on Aadhaar card tomorrow

Road rage: Biker beats Mayor's car driver with helmet

A motorcyclist allegedly thrashed Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar's car driver with his helmet this evening in an incident involving their vehicles, a close aide of the Mayor said today. The biker, who was going with his family on the motorcycle, beat up the car driver after his vehicle brushed against the mayor's vehicle. "The incident took place at Kalanagar junction at Kherwadi when the speeding biker first jumped the signal and then lost control over his vehicle and collided against the mayor's car," he said. The mayor was on his way to his home at Santacruz. "The motorcyclist then got into an argument with the car driver- Nichal and before the Mayor could intervene, he bashed up the driver with his helmet and fled from the scene," he further said. Man's suicide: Four including cop booked; two held

The Palghar district police today booked four persons, including a senior police official, for allegedly abetting suicide of a man from Virar. Amit Jha, who consumed poison on January 20, yesterday died at a Mumbai hospital. Jha is the brother of Vikas Jha, who had tried to set himself ablaze in November last year inside the office of a Deputy Superintendent of Police, police had said. Amit Jha had alleged that police did not take any action in the case involving his brother and hence consumed poison. A senior police official said a case under relevant section of the Indian Penal Code was been registered against four persons including the Police Inspector of Virar police station Yunus Shaikh for abetting Amit Jha's suicide. Two persons were arrested in connection with the case, he said, adding a probe was on.

NIA files charge-sheet in Jet Airways fake hijacking case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday filed chargesheet in the NIA Special Court at Gujarat's Ahmedabad, in the Jet Plane Hijacking case.The accused Birju Salla aka Amar Soni is charge-sheeted under section 3(1), 3(2) (a) and 4(b) of the Anti-Hijacking Act, 2016.The NIA in a release said that, "During investigation, it was revealed that accused Birju Salla, who travelled in the business class of the Jet Airways flight No. 9W339 on October 30, 2017 from Mumbai, prepared a 'threat note' in English and Urdu and intentionally placed it in the tissue paper box of the toilet near the Business Class thereby jeopardized the safety of the passengers and crew members on board"."The probing team has collected sufficient oral, documentary, technical, forensic and material evidences against Salla, who has thus committed the offence as defined in sections of the Anti-Hijacking Act, 2016 which is punishable under the law,'' the release added.A case was registered on November 7, 2017 in .

Odisha stand on Mahanadi vindicated after SC order: Patnaik

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today welcomed the Supreme Court order to set up a tribunal to resolve the Mahanadi water dispute and said that Odisha's stand has been vindicated. The apex court today directed the Centre to set up a tribunal within a month to resolve the long-standing dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh over the sharing of water from river Mahanadi. Patnaik said formation of the tribunal will go a long way in protecting the interests of the people, especially the farmers of the state. Meanwhile, Opposition BJP also welcomed the Supreme Court order and said the dispute should be solved within a short time for the interest of the state. Two Tel cops suspended for 'maligning' department image

The Telangana government today suspended two police officials for allegedly "maligning" the image of the department with their acts. The suspended officials included a woman Additional Superintendent of Police and Y Mallikharjuna Reddy, an Inspector at Kalwakurthy in Nagrakurnool district. The woman officer's husband yesterday filed a complaint with the Cyberabad Police claiming that she was having an affair with Reddy. A statement issued by the State Home Minister N Narasimha Reddy stated that the two officials are suspended. The woman officer is currently working as an additional SP with the Anti-Corruption Bureau. A case was registered against Reddy under sections 447 (criminal trespass) and 497 (adultery) of the IPC on the complaint of the woman officer's husband.

Gutkha scam: TN submits status report on probe in sealed cover

The Tamil Nadu government today submitted in the Madras High Court a status report in a sealed cover on the investigation into the 'Gutkha scam' and stated that there was a statutory bar in transferring the case to the CBI. The First Bench, comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Guddhose, was hearing a public interest litigation filed by DMK MLA J Anbazhagan, seeking a probe by the investigative agency into the alleged scam. The PIL has alleged that a state minister and high-level state and central government officers, including police officials, were involved in the scam to "facilitate" the sale of banned 'gutkha' (tobacco product). It contended that the Central Bureau of Investigation alone can conduct a thorough and impartial probe in the matter. Two held for demanding extortion money from doctor

Two persons were arrested for allegedly demanding Rs 20 lakh extortion money from a doctor, who runs his own nursing home in Arthla colony here, police said today. Tracking the details of the number from which the calls were placed to Dr Udaiveer Singh, police arrested Aabid and Bittoo, SHO Rakesh Singh said, adding that a third accused, Parvez Ranghad, was still at large. Aabid confessed to making the call, police said, adding that he had incurred heavy losses in his Arthla-based tent house business and planned the extortion, along with his associates, to pay off his debts. Aabid was acquainted with the doctor and knew where he lived. On January 7, he and Bittoo reached the doctor's residence and fired a shot in the air to scare him. The two accused were sent to jail, SHO Singh said, adding that Parvez would be nabbed soon.

NCLT: Tatas oppose SP Group representation on board

Presence of any Shapoorji Pallonji Group nominees on the Board of Tata Sons or their involvement with the company in any manner will not be in the best interest of Tata Group, Ratan Tata's counsel told the NCLT today. Tata's counsel S N Mukherjee told the tribunal that both - Pallonji and Cyrus Mistry - were elected to the Board of Tata Sons by virtue of the Tata Trusts voting in their favour and not out of their own motion. The counsel argued that damaging acts have been done by Mistry post his removal. Mukherjee argued that Mistry followed a "scorched earth" policy by making baseless allegations and eroding shareholder value. Man gets three years jail term in dowry case

A local court today awarded three years jail term to a man and two years each to his father and mother in connection with a dowry case registered by his wife 12 years ago. A sub-divisional judicial magistrate Anant Kumar found the three guilty of demanding dowry from the petitioner, but acquitted six others named in the case for want of evidence. The court has also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 each on the three. The petitioner had lodged a complaint with the Vaishali chief judicial magistrate court on June 16, 2005 stating that her husband and in-laws were demanding Rs 10 lakh as dowry to start a business. In the complaint, she had said that she was thrown out of her marital home when she could not fulfill the dowry demand, her advocate Sanjay Kumar Sinha said.

Man arrested, 1 kg heroine worth over Rs 4 cr seized

A 50-year-old man, suspected to be the kingpin of an interstate narcotic drug cartel, was arrested, and over 1 kilogram of heroin worth over Rs 4 crore was seized from him, police said today. On January 10, the Special Cell had arrested two men who revealed that they had procured the heroin from Riyaz and Farid, who in turn had got it from one Anwar alias Mama, they said. During investigation, it emerged that due to insurgency in the Naxal-affected areas in Jharkhand and West Bengal, these areas have become notorious for illegal cultivation of opium, the police added. Paramour arrested for murdering woman and her son in Rajasthan

An accused in a double murder case was arrested today by Kota police from Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh, officials said. Sohani Parashar (26) and her 12-year-old son Piyush were shot dead on Sunday evening at their house in the Bhimganj Mandi police station area here when her husband Neeraj Parashar was away, and younger daughter was playing in another room, they said. A case was registered under section 302 of IPC, Superintendent of Police (Kota City) Anshuman Bhomia said. Accused Chandra Kant Pathak (38), alias Dilip, a resident of Murena district of Madhya Pradesh, was arrested in connection with the case, the SP said. Patiala House Court first to have permanent national flag

The Patiala House District Courts Complex here will fly the national flag permanently from tomorrow. The 50-feet high tricolour, the first in a trial court across the country, will be unfurled by the Delhi High Court Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal tomorrow, the New Delhi Bar Association (NDBA) said. "The flag was installed by the Patiala House Courts at the request of the bar and the construction was carried out by the Central Public Works Department of the Government of India," NDBA Secretary Neeraj said. The Supreme Court today set aside an order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court granting bail to a British national in an alleged murder case, observing there was no reason to accord special consideration for him just because he was a foreigner. The apex court also set aside the high court order granting bail to two other co-accused in the murder case lodged in 2015 on the ground of parity. While setting aside the high court's last year order, a bench comprising Justices N V Ramana and S A Nazeer said that as per the prosecution, British national Resham Chand Kaler along with others had allegedly indulged in criminal activity. Max case: DMC sends case to disciplinary panel; hearing soon

The Delhi Medical Council (DMC) has sent the Max hospital twin baby case to its disciplinary committee and the hearing in the matter is likely to be held early next month, a senior official today said.
