A woman, who accused Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi of sexual harassment, on Tuesday asked the apex court's in-house probe committee for a copy of the report giving a clean chit to the CJI on all charges.
An accused wanted for the last 23 years for his alleged involvement in the killing of seven people was arrested from a village in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said Tuesday. Accused Wali Mohammad Mir, of the Saderkoot Bala area of Bandipora district, was involved in the brutal murder of seven people - five men and two women - of Saderkoot Bala village of Bandipora district in 1996, an official said. Police were tipped off about Mir's presence in the village, he said.
Five members of a family have been booked for allegedly torturing a 26-year-old woman for dowry in Thane's Ulhasnagar township, police said Tuesday. The complainant, a resident of Haweli area in Pune, has told police that her in-laws, husband and their kin would inflict burn injuries on her with hot oil, police said. "She was married to one Tikam Tulsidas Sachdev in July last year. Her husband's family started demanding gold and Rs 1.50 lakh in cash as dowry. They also tortured her by pouring hot oil on her hands," an official said quoting the complaint. A dowry case was registered on Monday against Tikam Tulsidas Sachdev, Tulsidas Sachdev, Sunita Tulsidas Sachdev, Vandana Hotwani and Jitu Hotwani, the official said, adding that no arrests have been made so far.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday condemned the incident of gang rape in Alwar district and directed officials to take stern action against the accused. "The state government is committed for women safety. Nearly a dozen police teams have been formed to arrest the accused and one arrest has been made. The victim and her family are given protection," Gehlot said in a statement. The chief minister said action would also be taken against the police officials if any lapses were found. The woman was allegedly raped by five men in front of her husband in Thanagazi area. She was going with her husband on a motorcycle when the accused stopped them and committed the crime.
The Securities Appellate Tribunal has granted interim stay on the Sebi's order against stock brokers OPG Securities and GKN Securities in the NSE co-location case. However, OPG and GKN have been directed to deposit Rs 7.5 crore and Rs 2.5 crore, respectively, to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) on or before May 20. If the amount is not deposited within the stipulated period, the interim order will stand vacated automatically, the tribunal said. It said that investigations have been going on since 2015 and stopping the business activities of the brokers with immediate effect by impugned order, prima-facie appears to be unjustified. "The matter would be listed for admission and final disposal on July 22," the tribunal said in an order on Monday. A Delhi Police sub-inspector allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday by shooting himself with a service pistol in South West Delhi, police said. The deceased has been identified as SI Sanjeev Kumar, they said. Vasant Vihar police station was informed at 3.28 am regarding admission of Kumar at AIIMS Trauma Centre. "On reaching the hospital, the investigating officer found that the injured has sustained bullet injury. He succumbed during treatment," Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Devender Arya said. A special police team Monday raided a private club here and arrested 40 people for allegedly indulging in gambling. A police release said Rs 2.44 lakh in cash and nearly 100 packs of playing cards were seized. Special teams have been formed to crackdown on gambling in the city. The 62-year-old club manager Sivaprasad and Selvam, an employee, are among those arrested, the release said. A team arrested nine people on Sunday for allegedly indulging in gambling from a room situated on the first floor of a hotel here. A four-year-girl kidnapped from a slum in Indore was Monday evening found dead in a well, an official said. The girl was kidnapped on Sunday night from a slum cluster here when her parents were asleep, he said. "She was raped and killed and her body disposed of in a deep well here. We believe it was done by someone known to the family. The slum cluster has 36 homes and we are questioning people from the locality," Senior Superintendent of Police RV Mishra said.
A man arrested in the sensational kidnapping and murder case of five-year-old twin boys in Madhya Pradesh's Satna district in February this year allegedly committed suicide in jail on Tuesday, police said. The twin boys were kidnapped from a school bus in the district's Chitrakoot town on February 12 and their dead bodies were found in Uttar Pradesh's Banda area on February 16. Ramesh Yadav (26), after having breakfast Tuesday morning, went to a Hanuman temple in the jail premises and hanged himself from a rod protruding from the roof of the structure, said Satna Superintendent of Police Riyaz Iqbal. "He was rushed to a hospital nearby but was declared dead on arrival. His autopsy will be conducted on Wednesday after his relatives arrive from Hamirpur in UP," he said. A retired senior Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official was arrested in connection with the collapse of a bridge near CSMT railway terminus on March 14 which killed seven persons and injured over 30, police said Tuesday. Shitalaprasad Kori (58), who was chief engineer (bridges) of the civic body when the incident happened, was arrested by Azad Maidan police and produced in court on Tuesday which remanded him in police custody till May 10, an official said. Earlier, the police had arrested BMC assistant engineer S F Kakulte and structural auditor Neeraj Desai in the case.
A gangster carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on him was arrested following an encounter with Delhi police's special cell sleuths in the national capital's Rohini area in the early hours of Tuesday, officials said. The accused, Paramjeet Dalal (31), a resident of Jhajjar in Haryana, had been absconding since 2016, they said. According to police, the accused used to threaten property dealers, businessmen, illegal satta operators and others in Rohini and outer Delhi to extort money. In 2009, Dalal with his associates killed one Satish in Mianwali area of Delhi. He was arrested and later released in 2016 on interim bail for three weeks but jumped bail, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, said. He along with his associates Pradeep Rana, Mohit Chhabra and Pradeep kidnapped a property dealer-cum-financier in 2016 and initially extorted Rs 25 lakh from him. A 21-year-old sailor on board the Navy's INS Talwar who was found with severe injuries and was rushed to a nearby naval hospital Saturday was declared dead by authorities there, a statement from the Navy said. Rahul Choudhary was working in a restricted area on INS Talwar which was docked at the Western Naval Command's base here, it said. He was found on the floor with severe injuries by fellow sailors on Saturday, it said, adding that an inquiry had been instituted into the incident.
A woman was allegedly raped by five men in front of her husband in Rajasthan's Alwar district, following which one of the accused was arrested on Tuesday, police said. The assailants also filmed the crime and uploaded the video on social media, they said. The incident took place on April 26 when the woman was travelling on a motorcycle with her husband. The accused stopped them on the Thanagazi-Alwar bypass and dragged the couple to an isolated area, where they allegedly raped the woman and threatened her husband with dire consequences, police said. The CJI Monday got a clean chit from a three-member Inquiry Committee headed by Justice S A Bobde which found "no substance" in the allegations of the former woman employee and further ruled that the report was not "liable to be made public". The 3-member Committee, which completed its task in 14 days, proceeded ex-parte as the woman had opted out of the inquiry on April 30 after participating for three days.
