Five Pakistani bloggers, who went missing earlier this year following a scathing campaign on the social media, were today cleared of blasphemy charges, official said. The men disappeared in January and at least four of them subsequently returned home. It was not know who had picked them, but fingers were pointed at the security agencies. However, the government and military authorities denied any wrongdoing. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) started blasphemy proceeding against them following a virulent campaign on the social media targeting the military. The fate of former Bihar chief ministers Lalu Prasad Yadav and Jagannath Mishra and 20 others will be decided tomorrow by a special CBI court here in the fodder scam case pertaining to fraudulent withdrawal of more than Rs 89 lakh from Deoghar Treasury between 1991 and 1994. Lalu, accompanied by younger son Tejaswi Yadav, arrived here to present himself before the special CBI Judge Shiv Pal Singh. The Madras High Court today issued a notice to J Jayalalithaa's niece and nephew on a petition by a woman claiming to be the biological daughter of the former Tamil Nadu chief minister and seeking a DNA test to establish her parentage. Justice S Vaidyanathan, who issued notice to Jayalalithaa's niece J Deepa and nephew J Deepak, said the court cannot order a DNA test as the petition's maintainability was yet to be argued. If the petitioner's plea was accepted, "it will result in opening of a Pandoras box, which will only lead to more deterioration of the privacy" of Jayalalithaa, he said. The woman had last month moved the Supreme Court with the same prayer but it had refused to entertain the plea. Vistara has submitted its response to aviation regulator DGCA's show-cause notice seeking explanation on why the airline did not file a police complaint in the alleged molestation case involving a Bollywood actress, who is a minor, a source said today. The actress was allegedly molested by a man onboard a Delhi-Mumbai flight of Vistara earlier this month. "Vistara has submitted its response to the show-cause notice issued by the DGCA in the incident involving a minor Bollywood actress who was allegedly molested by a fellow passenger on one of its flights from Mumbai," a source privy to the development told PTI. The airline's spokesperson was not immediately available for comments. The DGCA had issued a notice to Vistara asking it to explain as to why it did not file the police complaint in the alleged molestation case. Danish police today said they had arrested a Syrian asylum seeker from Sweden for "attempting to commit a terrorist act" in Copenhagen. The Copenhagen police said they arrested the 30-year-old man jointly with the Danish Security and Intelligence Service on Thursday over a failed attack which he plotted with another 21-year-old man in November 2016. "The man is charged with attempted terrorism for having, together with another man convicted in Germany, planned to randomly kill or hurt several people in an unknown location in Copenhagen," the police said in a statement. The police added the two men "wanted to attack people with knives and thereafter detonate one or several explosives, which failed when the accomplice was denied entry into Denmark and arrested by the German police". Police said today they have arrested a man for allegedly demanding Rs 10-lakh extortion money from a trader in Dadri. The man had claimed to be member of the Anil Dujana gang, but investigation revealed he was associated with another gang and used Dujana's name to scare the trader, Dadri DSP Nishank Sharma said. The accused has been identified as Ajay and he made the extortion call on December 20. Initially, he had demanded Rs five lakh from the trader, but later raised the amount to Rs 10 lakh, Sharma said. The police arrested him using surveillance of his mobile phone number.

Pakistan today arrested at least 28 Indians for allegedly fishing in their territorial waters, a day after it announced release of 291 Indian fishermen on humanitarian grounds over the next couple of weeks. An official of Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) said they nabbed the fishermen and seized five boats for fishing "illegally" in the country's waters. "A case has been registered against 28 fishermen and they have been handed over to the police," the official said. The arrests come a day after Pakistan's Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Faisal said 291 Indian fishermen will be released. "Pakistan has decided to release and repatriate 291 Indian fishermen in two phases -- on December 29 and January 8, 2018 via the Wagah Border as a goodwill gesture on humanitarian grounds," he had said in a statement. Markets regulator Sebi today lifted the curbs imposed on Prakash Industries, which was in the list of 331 suspected shell companies, after finding no "prima facie evidence" of misrepresentation of financials. "In absence of prima facie evidence/ suspicion of misrepresentation of financials/ business by the company (Prakash Industries), misuse of the books of accounts / funds of the company or violation of LODR (Listing Obligation and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, there is no reasonable ground to further verify the financials of the company warranting an audit," Sebi said in an order. The regulator also said that it is of the considered view that the actions envisaged in Sebi's letter dated August 7 against Prakash Industries are liable to be revoked. The Jammu and Kashmir State Information Commission (SIC) has initiated penalty proceedings against public information officers in more than 25 cases for delaying in responding to appeals and complaints, an official spokesman said. The proceedings have been initiated under Section 17 of the Jammu and Kashmir RTI Act, 2009, the spokesman said. He said the SIC can impose a penalty on the PIOs at the rate of Rs 250 per day of delay beyond 30 days after the RTI application was filed, subject to a maximum of Rs 25,000. The SIC is also empowered to recommend disciplinary actions against the PIOs. Since March this year, the SIC has held more than 600 hearings in Srinagar and Jammu, and through video links with appellants, complainants, PIOs and first appellate authorities from Kargil, Poonch, Udhampur, Doda and Kishtwar, the spokesman said. The SIC has cleared more than 225 appeals and complaints between March and November this year, he added.
The CBI has filed three charge sheets against former chairman of First Leasing Company of India Limited (FLCIL) and ex-BCCI chief A C Muthiah, and former Managing Director Farouk M Irani for allegedly cheating three banks to the tune of around Rs 665 crore, officials said today. The probe agency has filed these charge sheets before a special CBI court in Chennai, they said here. The charges levelled by the agency include criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery among others, a CBI spokesperson said. In the first case, it was alleged that key officials of FLCIL, in furtherance of a conspiracy with the statutory and internal auditors of the company, had availed various credit facilities from IDBI Bank with mala fide intentions to cheat it, the official said. He said it was done on the basis of forged financial reports and funds were siphoned away for extraneous and personal purposes causing loss of Rs 273.99 crore to the bank. The city police today nabbed a 15-member gang of burglars including three women and recovered 1.66 kg of gold and 6 kg of silver jewellery from them. With these arrests, police claimed to have solved over 51 cases of burglary or theft -- 48 cases registered in the city limits and three in East Godavari district. Leader of the gang was identified as Chukka Sreenu (43). Sreenu, a resident of Malkapuram area in Vizag city, was involved in over 160 cases, police said. A Class 10 girl, who was allegedly shot at in the head by his friend following a heated argument, has succumbed to her injuries, police said today. Senior Superintendent of Police H N Singh said that the girl was referred by a hospital in Vasundhara to another hospital in Noida after receiving first-aid on Tuesday. The girl, who studied at a school in Delhi, was shot at in the head by the boy, a Class 11 student, following a heated argument, the police said. The girl, who was in a coma, died last night, the SSP said. The boy has been sent to police custody and his father has been detained by the Indirapuram police, Singh said. An FIR for attempt to murder under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code has been converted into the Section of Murder (302), he said. BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje was today booked for alleged 'inflammatory' tweets on the rape and murder of a minor Dalit girl in Vijayapura, an incident which led to tension in some areas there for the past three days. One more person has been arrested in connection with the killing of BJP leader Shiv Kumar and his security guard last month, the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (UPSTF) said today. In a joint operation involving the UPSTF and Gautam Buddha Nagar police, a sharpshooter, identified as Aniruddha, was arrested from the Bisrakh area last night. A country-made pistol, three live cartridges, a motorcycle, a mobile phone and Rs 25,000 in cash were seized from Aniruddha, who hails from Muzaffarnagar, a spokesperson of the UPSTF said. During interrogation, Aniruddha told police his uncle was a member of the Vicky Tyagi gang. BJP leader Shiv Kumar and his security guard were shot dead in the Bisrakh area on November 16 when they were going to Ghaziabad in a car. Three people were earlier this month arrested by the UPSTF in connection with the killing.
