Constable dies after being hit by bus

A 42-year-old Delhi Police constable died after his motorcycle was hit by a speeding cluster bus near Palam flyover, police said today. The deceased, Amarpal, was an ex-serviceman and had joined the Delhi Police in 2010. He was posted at the Delhi Cantonment police station. While travelling on his motorcycle, he was hit yesterday by a bus at around 9.30 pm near Palam flyover near Maharaja Agrasen hospital, they added. A case was registered and the accused driver Ramniwas was arrested.

Kolayat Land Scam Case: Two accused sent to ED custody till December 30

Family of woman, allegedly trafficked to Saudi, cries for help

Another case of exploitation of an Indian national on a foreign land has come to light after family of a woman in Hyderabad has alleged that she was trafficked to Saudi Arabia on the pretext of job.As per Naseem Begum's family, an agent, identified as Bhanu, had offered her a job in Saudi Arabia, but she was employed as a maid at a house after reaching there."Bhanu, approached us and promised to offer my sister a job in Saudi. Later, he took her to Mumbai and introduced her to another agent, Iqmat Ullah. He also assured us that she would be back in six months," the victim's sister Farheen told ANI on Friday."The employers there deny her proper food and sleep, and make her work the whole day. Hyderabad Police arrest man who set woman on fire

The Hyderabad police on Friday arrested the accused for setting a 25-year-old woman ablaze in full public view in Secunderabad city of Telangana.A case under section 307 of IPC & ST/SC Atrocity Act has been registered.Meanwhile, speaking to ANI, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) North Zone, B Sumathi said "The reason behind the incident was she rejected the marriage proposal of the accused".Adding, "After she rejected him, he didn't want her to accept anybody else also".The empathetic incident took place earlier in the week in Lalaguda area of the city.According to reports, the accused called the victim at the spot, where he poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.Soon after committing the heinous act, the accused fled from the spot.Passersby took quick cognisance and put out the fire.The woman has suffered 50 percent burns and her condition is said to be critical.The investigation is underway.

MP: Villagers of Shivpuri allege gifts, cash distributed by CM taken back by officials

The tribal people of Madhya Pradesh's Shivpuri district on Friday alleged that the cash, clothes and gifts, which were distributed to the minor girls of the village in the felicitation programme by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan were taken back by administrative officers after he left.A programme 'Sahariya Sammelan' was organised on December 9, where the Chief Minister had washed the feet of minor girls and also gifted them with Rs 2100 and clothes.Speaking to ANI, Shivpuri Collector said, "The girls were only given Rs. 100, and not Rs. 2100. In addition, sweaters were also distributed as gifts. Adarsh case: HC quashes Guv's nod to prosecute Chavan, ex-CM

The Bombay High Court today quashed the sanction accorded by Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao to the CBI to prosecute Ashok Chavan in the Adarsh housing scam, in a relief to the Congress leader who had to quit as chief minister after he was implicated in the corruption case. Responding to the court verdict that held that the sanction cannot be "sustained", Chavan said the Governor's office has been saved from setting a "new precedent." Chavan, currently the president of Maharashtra unit of the Congress, had served as the chief minister between December 2008 and November 2010 before he was asked to step down over corruption charges in the Adarsh scam. The scam kicked up a huge political storm and was highlighted by the BJP in the 2014 Lok Sabha poll campaign. Actor and general secretary of the South India Artistes Association Vishal Krishna today appeared before the Madras High Court on a contempt plea filed against him. The matter relates to the SIAA elections in 2015. Vishal and his supporters were elected as SIAA office-bearers during the elections held that year. After assuming charge, Vishal reportedly announced that action would be taken against former SIAA president R Sarath Kumar and then general secretary Radha Ravi. Yogi's UPCOC Bill falters in Upper House where SP has majority

The Yogi Adityanath government's UPCOC Bill today hit a roadblock in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, where a determined opposition stalled its passage, following which the chairman referred it to a House panel for scrutiny. After a brief but animated discussion on the Uttar Pradesh Control of Organised Crimes (UPCOC) Bill, 2017, drafted on the lines of the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), it was put to vote. Delhi HC no to terminating 25-week-old pregnancy of minor

The Delhi High Court today refused to give its nod for termination of the 25-week-old pregnancy of a 15-year-old girl, after the medical board opined there was danger to the lives of both the foetus and the mother. A bench of justices S Muralidhar and I S Mehta said they cannot favour the minor girl's wish to medically terminate her pregnancy, as the foetus is "viable". The court declined the termination after a medical board of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) submitted before the bench that the foetus has taken a shape and it would not be advisable to allow termination. The medical board had informed the court that there is life-risk for both the mother and the foetus. Taking note of the board's submissions, the bench said it cannot approve the request of the girl. Woman officer foils bank robbery bid; 2 arrested

A woman employee of the Baroda Uttar Pradesh Gramin Bank here today foiled a robbery bid by two armed men, police said. Around 12:50 pm, one of the robbers entered the bank's Barra branch and opened fire before entering assistant manager Reena Chowdhry's cabin, Senior Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Meena said. Pointing a gun at her, the robber ordered Chowdhry to transfer all the cash into his bag, the SSP said. The woman officer, however, dodged the robber and pressed the emergency siren button installed near her table that alerted the people inside and outside the bank. Sensing trouble, the masked robber ran out towards his accomplice who was waiting on his bike. The bank employees raised an alarm and the people in vicinity nabbed the two robbers and thrashed them before handing them over to police. The arrested robbers have been identified as Vijay Pandey (23) and Gyanendra Srivastava (25) - both residents of neighbouring pocket Naubasta. Pandey was earlier working .

Juvenile accused should be given a chance at reformation: NGO

A child rights NGO said today that juveniles in conflict with the law should be given a chance at reformation, days after a Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) ordered that a 16-year-old student accused of murder of a junior in a Gurgaon school would be tried as an adult. "We keep on lowering the age and denying juveniles a chance at reformation by trying them as adults. It's not wise to keep on blaming juveniles for crime. It is time to invest in making our juvenile justice system work strongly," NGO Save the Children said in a statement. It is unfortunate that India is witnessing cases of criminalisation of children, it said. The JJB had on December 20 held that the 16-year-old student of Ryan International School would be tried as an adult. The next hearing in the case in a trial court will be held on January 6. 2 absconders arrested in Samba

The police has arrested two absconders in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district, a police official said today. During twin raids, the police succeeded in arresting the absconders, identified as Balbir Singh and Vinod Kumar, in the district yesterday, he said. They were wanted in criminal cases registered against them in 2013 and 2014, respectively, the official said. He said that the criminals were absconding since long and were evading arrest.

HC notice on PIL for guidelines for personnel in police

The Delhi High Court today sought the response of the Centre and the AAP government on a PIL seeking framing of guidelines to regulate the functioning of personnel in police stations and ensure the safety of the complainants and the accused. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notice to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Delhi government and the police seeking their stand on the plea by April 19, the next date of hearing. The petition has alleged that the number of complaints of crime and corruption lodged against personnel posted in police stations was higher as compared to those in other departments of the police. Petitioner Ajay Gautam has sought directions to the MHA and the Delhi government to lay down the duties and functions that must be performed by a personnel posted in a police station to ensure safety of the complainant and the accused in instances where no FIR was registered.

Ex-minister Jitendra Singh booked in royal property dispute

Former Union minister and Congress leader Jitendra Singh and two others have been booked for cheating and forgery on the charge that a trust run by them allegedly took over properties of the Bundi royal family fraudulently, police said today. The FIR was filed against Singh, his father-in-law Bijendra Singh, and Srinath Singh at the Bundi police station yesterday based on a complaint filed by Avinash Kumar Chandana (80), a resident of Safdarjung Enclave in New Delhi, circle in-charge of Bundi City Kotwali Ramnath Singh said. Ryan murder case: CBI opposes bail plea of 16-yr-old accused

The CBI today opposed the bail plea of the 16-year-old student accused in the Ryan murder case, saying the recent Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) order to try him as an adult "speaks about his mental status and the heinous crime he committed". The agency sought dismissal of the bail plea on the ground that the JJB had passed a very reasonable order denying statutory bail to the student, accused of killing seven-year- old Pradhuman Thakur. "The order of the court to try the accused as an adult assumes great significance in that it speaks about the mental status of the accused and the heinous crime committed by him... "The appeal filed by accused for grant of bail may please be dismissed in the interest of justice," the agency said. ED to challenge Moin Qureshi's bail

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday approached Delhi High Court against meat exporter Moin Qureshi's bail in a money laundering case.The matter is likely to be heard on reopening of courts after winter vacation.Moin Qureshi, who was arrested on August 25 after a case was filed against him last year under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act on the charges of illegal forex dealings and tax evasion, was granted bail by a Delhi Court on December 12.Earlier, the Delhi High Court dismissed Qureshi's bail plea and said that there was no illegality in Qureshi's arrest.While opposing Qureshi's plea, the ED and the Centre contested that "questioning of his arrest was an 'abuse' of the legal process" and told the court that there were serious charges of hawala transactions against him.Qureshi is accused of hawala transactions through Delhi-based hawala operators Parvez Ali of Turkman Gate and M/s South Delhi Money Changer (DAMINI) in Greater Kailash-1.
