2G case: Court says ex-law minister's conduct against protocol

Former Law Minister H R Bhardwaj's conduct while dealing with the issue relating to grant of new 2G licences was against "all established canons, discipline and protocol of government working", a special court has said. Special Judge O P Saini, while acquitting former telecom minister A Raja and others in 2G spectrum allocation cases, lashed out at the then law minister and former law secretary T K Vishwanathan for their conduct and termed the law ministry's opinion given at that time as "wholly outlandish". The court said the opinion of the law ministry, to refer to an EmpoweredGroupofMinisters (EGoM) the matter relating to the issue of new licences and allocation of spectrum to dual technology applicants, was aimed at "creating unnecessary controversy". BJP MLA raises issue of fraudulent repair work at Manora

A BJP MLA today alleged that no action has been taken despite his complaint that money was paid for a repair work that was never undertaken at Manora Aamdar Niwaas, a residential facility for MLAs and MLCs in south Mumbai. Speaking in the Legislative Assembly on the last day of winter session of Maharashtra legislature here, BJP MLA Chetan Waghmare called it "nothing but a fraud". "As per the preliminary probe by the public works department, its local staff sanctioned bills of repair work which was never undertaken. It is nothing but a fraud, and no legal action has been initiated so far," he said. The building stands near Mantralaya, the administrative headquarters of the Maharashtra government. Bill to amend 50-year-old law on breach of biz contract tabled

A bill proposing to grant a party rights to seek damages from the other side in case of a breach of a business contract and also reduce discretion of courts in such matters was introduced in the Lok Sabha today. The Specific Relief (amendment) Bil, 2017 is aimed at tweaking a 54-year-old law that deals with specific fulfillment of a contract as part of the government's ease of doing business policy. The Union Cabinet had last week approved amendments to the Specific Relief Act, 1963, and the bill concerned was introduced by Minster of State for Law P P Chaudhary. The present law provides for law relating to certain kind of specific relief. The act is a remedy which aims at the exact fulfillment of an obligation or specific performance of the contract rather than grant of a general relief or damages or compensation. The Specific Relief Act has not been amended since its inception. The amendments propose that after two parties enter into an agreement and one of them breaks

Secunderabad horror: Woman set on fire by jilted lover, dies

A 25-year-old dalit woman, who was set ablaze last evening in full public view by her former colleague for refusing his marriage proposal, succumbed to burns this morning, police said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Zone) B Sumathi said the accused, Sai Karthik (aged around 28), a school dropout, poured petrol on the woman who was returning home from office and set her afire in Secunderabad's Lalaguda area, around 10 kms from here. He was arrested today and booked for murder, Sumathi said at a press conference. The woman, who belonged to a scheduled caste, worked as an accountant in an aluminium fabrication unit where Karthik also worked for one year before being sacked by the management as his conduct was "not good", she said. HC stays Rs 50L fine on Kolkata company in coal scam case

The Delhi High Court today stayed a trial court order imposing a fine of Rs 50 lakh on a Kolkata-based iron and steel company in connection with a coal scam case. Justice Anu Malhotra put on the hold till January 22, the next date of hearing, the special CBI court's order to deposit the fine. The high court's interim order came on the appeal of the company, Vini Iron and Steel Udyog Ltd's (VISUL), which has sought waiver of the costs. The high court also sought response of the CBI on the company's plea seeking setting aside of the trial court's December 16 order convicting it in the coal scam case. "The trial court order is stayed on parity with the other convict's appeal," the court said. The company, in its plea, has said that the special court had wrongly found them guilty of the alleged scam. The high court on December 20 had sought response of the CBI on an appeal by former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda's close aide Vijay Joshi against the trial court's order .

Three including two women held for flesh trade

Three persons, including two women, were arrested for allegedly indulging into flesh trade in Bhiwandi in the district, police said today. Sleuths of the Anti-Human Trafficking Cell (AHTC) of Thane police raided a residential premises at Hanuman Tekdi in Bhiwandi yesterday and arrested three persons, said Senior Police Inspector Ravindra Doundkar of AHTC. Five women were also rescued from the residential premises, he said, adding one of the arrested is a widow, who hailed from West Bengal. A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act was registered, he said, adding a probe was on. One of the accused has been identified as Namdeo Jadhav (64) while the police have withheld names of the two women who were apprehended.

2G scam case: We were wrongly framed, says Kanimozhi

A day after being acquitted in the 2G case, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi on Friday said she was wrongly framed in the multi-crore scam."The DMK was blamed unnecessarily and we had been framed wrongly. Delhi HC issues notice to MHA on plea seeking directions to ensure safety of complainant

DRI seizes 50-kg gold in courier at Mumbai International Airport

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized consignments of smuggled 50-kg gold at the Mumbai International Airport on Thursday.Acting on a tip-off, the DRI officials and Mumbai Customs successfully made the seizure from a DHL courier packet which arrived from Gulf region.As per sources, the consignees of this courier at both Gulf and Mumbai have used bogus details to hide the identity of the real beneficiary."The investigation is under progress. Pakistan arrests 28 Indian fishermen

The Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) has arrested 28 Indian fishermen for allegedly fishing illegally in the country's territorial waters in the Arabian Sea.Geo News quoted a PMSA spokesperson as saying that the PMSA carried out an operation in the open sea during which 28 Indian fishermen were arrested and five of their vessels were seized on charges of illegal fishing.The spokesperson added that the fishermen were handed over to the Docks Police for further legal action.Earlier this month, 43 Indian fishermen were arrested for entering Pakistan's territorial waters.Pakistan on Thursday decided to release 291 Indian fishermen on humanitarian grounds in two phases starting from next week, Radio Pakistan reported.Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal in Islamabad said the fishermen will be released in the first phase on 29th of this month and on the 8th of next month.The Indian and Pakistani forces often detain each other's fishermen for trespassing territorial waters.

HC sets aside Guv's nod to prosecute Chavan in Adarsh case

In a relief for former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, the Bombay High Court today quashed and set aside Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao's sanction granted to the CBI in 2016 to prosecute the senior Congress leader in the Adarsh Housing scam. A bench of Justices Ranjit More and Sadhana Jadhav held that the sanction granted by the governor could not be "sustained" since it was not based on any fresh material produced by the CBI that could be considered as plausible "evidence" by courts during trial. "It was permissible for the Hon'ble Governor (Rao), the sanctioning authority in the present case, to review or reconsider the earlier decision of the erstwhile governor's (his predecessor Governor K Sankaranarayanan) decision not to grant sanction, since the CBI claimed that some fresh material had surfaced after the earlier sanction was refused," the bench said. Disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein allegedly owes his ex-wife Eve Chilton USD 5 million in child support. Woman shoots mother, brother

A 47-year-old woman allegedly shot at her mother and brother late last night in south Delhi's Defence Colony, the police said today. The accused Sangeeta, who has participated in state-level shooting tournaments, was apparently drunk at the time of the incident, they said. The woman's brother Harsaran told police that Sangeeta shot at him and his mother around midnight. Harsaran along with his mother is now out of danger. Romil Baaniya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), said the woman has been detained and the pistol seized. She was also into adventure tourism and used to go to Sohna, Gurgaon. For the last one year, she had stopped going for shooting practise and stopped meeting people, said the officer. Her father said Sangeeta was suffering from depression and on medication. 8-year-old raped by six neighbourhood boys

An eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped by six boys, a 19-year-old and five minors aged about 10, living in her neighbourhood, police officials said here today. All six have been held following a complaint from the girl's mother yesterday. She alleged that the six, all living in her neighbourhood in Kondhwa area, sexually assaulted her daughter, an official said. The police arrested the 19-year-old and sent the five boys, in the age group of 10 to 11, to an observation home, he said. The incident came to light yesterday when the woman took her daughter to a doctor after she complained of abdominal pain. The doctor found some marks on the girl's body during a medical examination and suspected it to be a case of sexual abuse, the official said. When the doctor asked the girl about the marks, she revealed that she had been sexually assaulted by the six on four to five occasions in the last couple of weeks, he said.
