Max case: Family seeks CBI probe, protests outside hospital

The family of the twin babies, one of whom was wrongly declared dead by Max Hospital in Shalimar Bagh, today demanded a CBI probe into the case after an appellate authority stayed the Delhi government order cancelling the hospital's licence. At a press conference held here, 48-year-old Kailash Kumar, grandfather of the baby boy, who later died at a nursing home in Pitampura while his sister was still born, alleged that the family was not even "informed" about the stay order. "We tried to silently protest in front of Max Hospital in Shalimar Bagh, but police asked us to move from there. The Delhi government had taken the decision that would have served as a warning to other hospitals. "But, now the cancellation order has been stayed. We are running for justice. We want justice and so we demand a CBI probe into the whole case so that things get clear," Kailash told reporters. He said they have hired an advocate to pursue the case and claimed that today a plea was filed by

Cong 'choreographed' 2G chargesheet,verdict no clean chit:BJP

The BJP today said that the trial court verdict acquitting the accused in the 2G spectrum case was no "clean chit" to the Congress and cited the 2012 Supreme Court order that cancelled the spectrum allocation to assert that corruption had been proved. Attacking the then Manmohan Singh government, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said it had given licences in 2007-08 on the basis of a price linked to 2001 and there was a "huge element of arbitrariness" in the implementation of the policy. His colleague Prakash Javadekar alleged that the "choregraphed" charge sheet by the previous UPA government resulted in acquittal of the accused. The trial court in its verdict has dubbed the chargesheet as "choreographed" and Javadekar told reporters that the CBI had failed it in 2011 when the UPA was in power. "The Congress choreographed it," he said. To make his point, he cited a case in which the then law minister Ashwani Kumar had to resign after he was accused of interfering with a ...

Trial in 2G cases attracted a lot of public attention: Court

The trial in 2G cases attracted a "lot of public attention" drawing several private and public-spirited persons to the court with claims that true facts were not placed on record, Special CBI Judge O P Saini said today. Saini, who acquitted former telecom minister A Raja and others in three separate cases probed by the CBI and ED, noted that a number of applications filed by such private persons in the court were not supported by any legally admissible material. "It may be noted that trial of the instant case attracted lot of public attention. Everyone was curious to know about the case. Due to this, the courtroom would always remain overcrowded, filled up with persons from all sections of society," the judge said in his verdict. The court noted that several private persons came before it with claims that true facts were not placed, but when they were questioned as to whether they were in possession of any definite material for making such an assertion, "almost all of .

Raja not mother lode of conspiracy, didn't misled then PM:

Former telecom minister A Raja was not the "mother lode of conspiracy" and he "cannot be faulted" for misrepresention of facts to then prime minister Manmohan Singh, a special court said today while acquitting the DMK leader in the 2G spectrum allocation case. The court held that Raja's deposition matched with the official record and appeared to be cogent, truthful and acceptable. It was a matter of great importance that he took a "huge risk" in appearing as a defence witness, giving a good opportunity to the prosecution to "grill him" in detail about the payment of alleged illegal gratification of Rs 200 crore, Special Judge O P Saini said in his verdict. Saini, who "religiously" heard the matter on a daily basis for nearly seven years, said the genesis of the case lAY not so much in the actions of Raja but in the action or inaction of others. "There is no material on record to show that Raja was mother lode of conspiracy in the instant case. There is also no evidence .

Once US murder capital, NYC close to record low in homicides

Even after two terror attacks and a driver's deadly rampage through Times Square, New York City is on track to smash its modern-era low for homicides in a year. Through December 17, the city of 8.5 million people, once America's murder capital, had recorded 278 killings. That puts it on pace to end this year with killings down 14 per cent from last year, and well below the 333 in 2014, which was the year with the fewest homicides since the city began keeping accurate crime statistics in 1963. Those numbers mean a person's odds of getting killed by homicide in tightly packed, diverse New York City this year were about the same as they were last year in Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota. Crime has been dropping for many years in New York, but 2017 saw substantial drops even in places like Brooklyn's 75th Police Precinct, once among the nation's most violent places. "You can feel the change. More people are out walking the streets at night, they're out talking to their ...

Woman moves HC claiming to be Jaya's daughter

Claiming to be the biological daughter of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, a woman today moved the Madras High Court seeking that the body of AIADMK leader be cremated as per the Vaishnavite brahmin community rituals. Justice S Vaidyanathan posted the petition of the woman for tomorrow to decide on maintainability after senior counsel V Prakash appearing for her sought time to amend the prayer to include a plea for a DNA test to establish her parentage. The woman had last month moved the Supreme Court with the same prayer but it had refused to entertain it. The woman had claimed that she had been given in adoption to Jayalalithaa's sister and her husband. A bench of Justices M B Lokur and Deepak Gupta had, however, said she was at liberty to approach the high court. When the matter came up for hearing, Justice Vaidyanathan, noting that several persons were claiming they were the legal heirs of Jayalalithaa, orally observed that to put the quietus on the

2G verdict acquitting accused shocking, shame: Bhushan

Advocate Prashant Bhushan today termed as "shocking" and a "shame" the special court's verdict acquitting all the accused in the 2G spectrum allocation cases. In a series of tweets, Bhushan, who had argued for the PIL filed by NGO Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL), on which the Supreme Court had ordered a CBI probe, said "the acquittal of all 2G scam accused by trial court is grossly wrong and sends a signal that influential people are not accountable in this country's judicial system." "There was considerable evidence of benami licences, fixing of the 1st Come 1st served system & also bribes in this. Shame (sic)," he said. He said there was a "mountain of documentary evidence" in the CBI chargesheet about the illegal gratification paid to the DMK's Kalaingnar TV. HC doubts ashram's claim that women there are free

The Delhi High Court today raised doubts over a north Delhi-based ashram's claims that the female inmates there were not illegally confined, saying that if they were free, why were they being kept behind locked doors. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar asked why the ashram's founder and spiritual head was not making an appearance if he was genuine and honest. "Where is he? This inquiry (by the CBI) into the ashram, where girls and women were allegedly kept in illegal confinement will throw him in suspicion, if he does not appear," the bench said and sought his appearance before the CBI. The counsel for the ashram, however, told the bench that its founder was not in Delhi and he has sent the message about the court's order through someone else. Irked over the counsel's statement, the court wished to know about the whereabouts of Virender Dev Dixit, referred to as the founder and spiritual head of the Adhyatmik Vishwa Vidyalaya in North
