Gurgaon man robbed, killed by assailants

A 27-year-old man was robbed and killed by two persons who later dumped his body in south's Delhi Mahipalpur forest area, police said today. Body of Sunil Kumar Bhatt, a native of Uttarakhand who lived with his wife in Gurgaon's Gandhi Nagar area, was found in the forest area of Mahipalpur of neighbouring Delhi. "Bhatt on Thursday around 7 pm left for Haridwar for a function at his brother's place. He boarded a private cab after its driver and a person masquerading as passenger lured him saying that they were also going to Haridwar," he said. "While my husband called me to inform that he has boarded a cab, the call got disconnected abruptly. On calling again, his number was found switched off mode," Bhatt's wife Deepa told police. "Suspecting foul play, she approached the Gurgaon Police did not take swift action and registered only missing complaint," she said. CBI's ex-Coal scam probe officer discharged in corruption case

A special court today discharged CBI officer Vivek Dutt, who was probing cases related to the coal blocks allocation scam, in a case of allegedly taking bribe from an individual for settling his case with the Delhi Police. Special Judge N KMalhotra granted the relief to Dutta, saying there was not enough evidences to put him on trial. The court, however, ordered framing of charges against CBI Inspector Rajesh Chandra Karnatak, alleged middleman Rajesh Pachisia and businessman Dinesh Chand Gupta. Dutt was arrested by the CBI in Karnataka on May 17, 2013 for allegedly accepting bribe of Rs seven lakh from Gupta to settle his land dispute. The CBI said that Gupta had a land dispute and a cheating case was registered against him at Amar Colony police station here and Dutt used to put pressure on the Delhi Police officials, who were investigating the cheating case, to quash the FIR and for this he had demanded money from Gupta.

Meghalaya man commits suicide

Body of a 28-year-old call centre employee was found from his rented accommodation at Bishanpura village here today, police said. The body was spotted by the house owner when he had gone to collect rent from the victim, Sandeep Taman, they said. SSI Dharmendra Sharma said Taman might have taken the extreme step two to three days ago. No suicide note was found from the spot, he said. Taman, a native of Meghalaya, was working at a call centre in Noida Sector 63, police said. The incident is being probed, Sharma said.

Man arrested for raping minor over a period of 4 years

The owner of a jeans unit was today arrested for allegedly raping a minor over a period of four years. Senior Inspector Ganashyam Palange of Hill Line Police station under Ulhasnagar division said that Kedar Pradhan (26) was arrested after the minor, who was working at the unit, filed a complaint yesterday. He said that the victim in her complaint stated that Pradhan had been raping her since 2013 at the jeans unit situated in Camp 5 of Ulhasnagar. Police said the complainant had also alleged that the accused used to threaten her with dire consequences if she revealed her ordeal to anyone. The accused had also promised marriage to her, police added. Police said that the accused had been arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code as well as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Investigations into the matter are in progress, police added.

Medical officer accuses BJP MLA of threatening him

The chief medical officer (CMO) of Hardoi district today accused BJP legislator Ashish Singh of misbehaving and threatening him in his office here, a charge the MLA denied. The incident took place this afternoon. "The MLA arrived at the CMO office along with his supporters this afternoon and after locking the door from inside misbehaved with me and threatened me," CMO P N Chaturvedi told reporters. Singh was mounting pressure to transfer a woman staff in the medical department even after an employee was appointed recently on the recommendation of a senior minister, he claimed. "The MLA was asking me to ignore the minister's recommendation," the CMO said, adding that he has informed District Magistrate Shubhra Saxena about the incident through a letter and has also demanded proper security for the CMO office. Man rapes 4-year-old tribal girl, smashes her head with stone

A 4-year-old tribal girl was allegedly raped and killed by a man living next door to the victim in Manawar area, 90 km from the district headquarters, police said. Superintendent of Police Virendra Singh said that the accused, identified as 25-year-old Karan, lured the girl to a deserted place and allegedly raped her. The official said that after raping the girl, the accused smashed her head with a stone so as to destroy evidence and to make it difficult to identify the victim. The girl's body was found in the forest about 500 metres from her home, the official said. "We rushed to spot and after investigation, we rounded up Karan who has confessed to the crime," said Singh. The body has been sent for post-mortem to Indore and further investigations were underway, Singh added.

Two arrested for smuggling cow meat

Two persons have been arrested on charges of smuggling cow meat from Jasoi village here and five quintals of meat was seized, the police said today. Moor Muhammad and Sarah Qureshi were arrested yesterday after their vehicle was intercepted by a police team, SHO, Titwai, Sube Singh said. The meat was being smuggled from Chosana village to Muzaffarnagar, he said.

Calcutta High Court hears old appeal cases on a holiday

The Calcutta High Court sat on a holiday today to hear old appeal cases in a bid to reduce the backlog of cases. The high court functions from Monday to Friday and this is probably the first time since its inception in 1862 that it held a sitting on a Saturday, cancelling holiday. The initiative was in deference to desire expressed by Chief Justice of India Justice Dipak Mishra through a letter in September to the chief justices of all high courts to hold special bench on Saturday to hear old criminal appeals. "This is the first time that the high court is sitting on a Saturday," Public Prosecutor Saswata Gopal Mukherjee said. A division bench comprising Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice R Bharadwaj heard 17 appeals, in most of which the convicts have already served their sentences but their appeals were pending or a short part of their term has been left to be gone through. Coal scam cases against ex-secy H C Gupta: 2 done, 9 remaining

Former Union Coal Secretary H C Gupta, named as an accused in 11 cases related to the coal blocks allocation scam, has been convicted and sentenced in two cases. Gupta, who was the coal secretary from December 31, 2005 to November 2008, was awarded three-year jail term today for indulging in corrupt practises and hatching criminal conspiracy in the allocation of Rajhara North coal block in Jharkhand to a Kolkata-based company, Vini Iron and Steel Udyog Ltd. (VISUL). On May 22 this year, he was awarded two-year imprisonment, along with others, in a case relating to irregularities in the allocation of Thesgora-B Rudrapuri coal block in Madhya Pradesh to Kamal Sponge Steel and Power Ltd. (KSSPL). Among other cases involving Gupta is one related to the allocation of Amarkonda Murgadangal coal block in Jharkhand, also including Congress leader and industrialist Naveen Jindal as an accused. Gupta is also an accused in a case pertaining to the allocation of coal block to AMR .

Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today sought a report from police after some people at Thattanchavady complained to her about being threatened by a "rowdy." In a release, she said she had received a petition at the open house meet in Raj Nivas on December 13. Those who had purchased residential plots in Thattanchavady complained that they could not go ahead with construction of houses because of alleged threat and intimidation by the "rowdy", who she said, is now in jail in a murder case. 15 BJP members booked for manhandling BSP corporator

An FIR was today registered against 15 unidentified BJP members for allegedly manhandling BSP corporator Musharraf Husain during the oath taking ceremony of Aligarh Municipal Corporation members earlier this week, police said today. The case was filed at the Banna Devi police station under relevant sections of IPC, four days after the BSP corporator filed a complaint with the police. The FIR against BJP members comes in the wake of mounting pressure by opposition parties alleging that the police was taking one-sided view of the entire episode. CBI arrests businessman in connection with bribery case

The CBI today arrested businessman Rohit Reddy Bathina in connection with a bribery case allegedly involving NTPC Director Finance Kulamani Biswal, officials said. Bathina, Director of BGR Mining and Infra Pvt Limited, was arrested nearly nine days after the agency registered an FIR and carried out searches at various locations, including his and Biswal's residential premises, they said. Bathina's father Umapathy Reddy was also questioned recently by the agency. CBI spokesperson said Bathina was called for questioning at the headquarters and was arrested based on evidence recovered by the agency. The agency had registered an FIR against NTPC's Kulamani Biswal, Bathina and Prabhat Kumar. Biswal is in Board of Directors of NTPC, the country's largest energy conglomerate. Court convicts ex-TV producer Suhaib Ilyasi for wife's murder

A Delhi court today convicted former television serial producer Suhaib Ilyasi for stabbing to death his wife Anju 17 years ago. The order was passed by Additional Sessions Judge S K Malhotra. Suhaib was guilty on the charge of murder under the Indian Penal Code. He faces a minimum punishment of life imprisonment and the maximum of death penalty in the case. Advocate Manu Sharma, who represented Suhaib during the protracted trial, said that the court would hear the arguments on the quantum of sentence to be awarded to the convict on December 20. Lawyer Satender Sharma, who appeared on behalf of key witness and mother of Anju, Rukma Singh, said the Delhi High Court had in August 2014 ruled that Suhaib would face the charge of murder for the death of his wife. He was earlier charged with comparatively milder sections including 304 B (dowry death) of the IPC. Civic official arrested for demanding liquor bottle as bribe

The health officer of Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) was arrested today by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for accepting a bottle of foreign liquor worth Rs 15,884 as bribe. ACB officials said that Prakash Harishchandra Jadhav, 46, was arrested from his office today as he accepted the liquor bottle as part of an ACB trap. Officials said Jadhav had asked for the bribe from the complainant, a medical officer, in return for issuing the latter's appointment letter. The complainant had approached the Thane unit of the ACB which laid the trap, said officials. In another case, ACB officials arrested a depot manager of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST)from Marol-Andheri for accepting Rs 5000 as bribe. Officials said BEST depot manager Aadesh Khare, 57, was arrested for demanding and accepting the bribe for passing favourable remarks of the canteen service at the depot.

Turkey court releases 7 suspects in New Year attack trial

A Turkish court today ordered the release of seven suspects in the trial over the deadly New Year attack on an Istanbul nightclub following an initial series of hearings. The court in Silivri outside Istanbul ruled that 44 suspects -- including the self-confessed attacker Uzbek citizen Abdulkadir Masharipov -- must stay in jail. But it said seven could go free under judicial control. This means that they remain charged and will have to regularly report to the authorities. A total of 57 suspects are on trial, with the remaining number freed under judicial control or on the run. The trial opened on December 11 with the court hearing five days of testimony. The next hearings will begin on March 26. Masharipov, who was present for the hearings, has refused to testify although the court heard from his wife who is also on trial and denied all knowledge of the plot. Second draft of NRC to be published as per SC order: Assam CM

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said a second draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) would be published following a Supreme Court order to include in it all genuine citizens of the state. After the first publication of the draft NRC scheduled on December 31, there will be another publication of the draft containing the names of those who would not figure in the first publication. "As per hon'ble Supreme Court's order there will be another draft publication of the NRC and names of all genuine citizens will be included in it, the updation of which is exclusively supervised by the Supreme Court of India," the Chief Minister said in a statement here. The NRC of 1951 is now being updated under the supervision of the Supreme Court to identify original residents of the state in order to check illegal migration. The apex court yesterday ordered that claims of those citizens, whose names do not figure in the draft NRC for Assam to be published by December .

11 people arrested for creating nuisance during Raje's

Eleven people were arrested today for allegedly creating nuisance during a programme of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje here, an official said. They allegedly waved black flags and shouted slogans outside the premises of the venue where Raje was holding a Jan Sunwai or public hearing, the police said. They were demanding a government college in Fatehpur. "Eleven people were arrested under section 151 of the CrPC to prevent the commission of cognisable offences. Woman missing form J-K found in Mumbai

A 22-year-old woman, who went missing this month, from Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district was found in Mumbai and handed over to her parents, who reside in Himachal Pradesh, today, an official said. Her parents had lodged a complaint in the district's Rehambal police station claiming that their daughter went missing on December 6 after she went out of her rented accommodation, the official said. He said the missing girl was traced in Mumbai. She was brought back and handed over to her family after legal formalities, the official said.

Pakistan's judiciary works "independently" and faces "no pressure" from anyone, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar said today, rejecting the ruling PML-N's allegations that the Supreme Court was against the party and ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
