A person has been arrested here after another man for whom he stood as surety jumped his bail, police said Wednesday. The accused has been identified as Omprakash Giri, a resident of KG Marg who used work as a driver at the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), they said. "Mohammad Sohail Khan (42), a resident of Harkesh Nagar, Okhla, was earlier arrested. Khan was granted bail and Giri stood as his surety. However, once the accused was granted bail, he did not appear in the court," Vijay Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), said. Later, when Giri was summoned, he went missing. The court got the bail documents verified and found that the pay slip submitted by Giri was forged, the officer said. Ratan Singh, an elderly man, was shot dead by his nephew, Rohit, and his two accomplices in Khurshaidpura village late on April 21. The Supreme Court will continue hearing on Thursday plea of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) seeking permission to arrest and custodial interrogation of former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar for his alleged role in destructing evidence in Saradha chit fund case.A Bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi heard the arguments of the CBI and Kumar's counsel. The Ludhiana unit of Special Task Force (STF) has arrested three persons with 600 gram of heroin on Wednesday, police said."Police seized heroin from the car with Delhi's nameplate. Four alleged drug peddlers were held in Srinagar and Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, police said. In Srinagar, two alleged drug peddlers were arrested from a police checkpoint following recovery of heroin and nearly Rs 2 lakh in cash from their car, officials said. "Police in its action targeting drug dealings in Srinagar has arrested two notorious drug peddlers at a checkpoint at Ram Munshi Bagh," a police spokesman said. He said the arrested persons were identified as Bashir Ahmad Gatoo of Pulwama and Numan Farooq Bhat of Channapora area of the city. "Officers at the checkpoint seized heroin and Rs1,99,400 in cash from them. A car has also been seized," he said. The police in BJP-ruled Tripura on Wednesday registered a case against Congress vice-president Tapas Dey for sharing an alleged defamatory social media post related to Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and his wife. Two persons were already arrested for sharing the post and a local court on Wednesday extended police custody of one of them, freelance journalist Saikat Talapatra who was charged with criminal conspiracy and defamation. A 24-year-old man was stabbed to death allegedly by his father-in-law when the victim intervened in a fight between the accused and his wife in South Delhi's Tigri area, police said Wednesday. The incident took place on Tuesday night and the accused Narender Kumar has been arrested, they said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Vijay Kumar said they received information from Safdarjung Hospital regarding an injured man. It was later revealed that the victim Dev Kumar, a resident of Sukhdev Vihar, has succumbed to his injuries during treatment around 8 am Wednesday, the police officer said. During investigation, the victim's wife Bhagyashree said her father was drunk when he was fighting with her mother. When Dev Kumar intervened, the accused attacked him with a knife, the police officer said. Dev Kumar got married to Bhagyashree in December, 2018. A deputy superintendent of police (DySP) was shot dead by an acquaintance at his house in Bhopal, police said late Wednesday evening. Goralal Ahirwar (61) was shot at his residence in Awadhpuri area, said Inspector General of Police Jaideep Prasad. Ahirwar was posted with the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID), he said. The accused was identified and efforts were on to arrest him, he said. Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi Wednesday met the three-member in-house committee looking into allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him by a former woman employee of the Supreme Court, an official source said. "A letter of request was issued to the Chief Justice of India asking him to meet the committee and he responded to it and he met the committee on this issue," the source said. The in-house inquiry committee is headed by Justice S A Bobde, who is the senior-most judge in the Supreme Court after the CJI, and its two other members are women judges of the apex court -- justices Indu Malhotra and Indira Banerjee. The woman, who levelled the allegations, walked out of the inquiry committee on Tuesday, raising objections over various issues, including denial of her lawyer's presence.

Two African nationals were arrested for allegedly smuggling cocaine, police said Wednesday. The accused were identified as Tine Mustafa (29) and Innocent Aghadiobi (40), both residing at Tilak Nagar, they said. The arrests were made following a tip-off that two African nationals, alleged to be members of an illegal drugs syndicate, would come to Dwarka with a consignment of cocaine, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) A K Singla said. Ninety gram cocaine was recovered from their possession, he said. Mustafa who belongs to Senegal in West Africa arrived in India two years ago. A 19-year-old girl who was allegedly raped inside a moving car here has retracted her allegations against the unidentified assailant, a police officer said on Wednesday. The "rape victim's" statement was recorded before the judicial magistrate on Tuesday under section 164 (5A) (a) of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) 1973 in which she backtracked on her charges of kidnapping and rape levelled in the FIR registered at Dhalli Police Station on Sunday, the official said on the condition of anonymity. Three persons were arrested Wednesday for allegedly blackmailing a man in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura district, a police official said. The accused sent morphed, nude pictures of the victims to them along with a note demanding Rs 2 lakh or the photos would be uploaded online, Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar Singh. A mobile number would be mentioned in the note for further instructions on when, where and how to transfer the money, he said. While Harish and Sonu were nabbed from Jugal Ghat when they were waiting to receive the money, third accused Sohail was nabbed from Krishna Studio Guranagar in Vrindaban, Singh said. A Maharashtra government official has been sentenced to three years in jail by a special court here for accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 in 2013 on behalf of his senior for extending an official favour to an employee of the Pune civic body. In his order, pronounced on April 30, the special Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) court judge S J Biyani convicted Udaysingh Chouhan (48), who was posted as Desk Officer with the Urban Development Department (UDD) in Mumbai under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The court, however, acquitted the then UDD deputy secretary Anandrao Jiwane and department clerk Subhash More of the bribery charges under the act. As per the prosecution, Chouhan had accepted Rs 50,000-bribe from the complainant, Laxman Damse, an employee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), in October 2013, on the behalf of Jiwane at Mantralaya (state secretariat) in Mumbai. Damse and others were suspended in 2012 for some irregularities, but were given a clean chit .
A young man was arrested here Wednesday for allegedly raping and killing a 12-year-old girl. Avinash Sahu (18) was arrested for offences of rape and murder under the IPC and under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, police said. The girl was visiting a Jain temple with her 16-year-old aunt Tuesday evening when Sahu, who knew the latter, took the girl away to a secluded spot when the aunt was not around, police said. "Laws in the country should be uniform and cannot be for general category or SC/ST category," the top court said while reserving its verdict on the Centre's petition seeking review of its March 20, 2018 judgement which had virtually diluted provisions of arrest under the SC/ST Act. A bench of Justices Arun Mishra and U U Lalit, after hearing the submissions of Attorney General K K Venugopal appearing for Centre, said it is reserving the verdict. At the outset, Venugopal said the whole March verdict was "problematic" and it should be reviewed by the court. A 32-year-old man tried to commit suicide by slitting his throat with a knife on Wednesday after a girl whom he befriended on Facebook rebuffed his romantic advances, police said. Anil Sharma, from Haryana, became friends with a girl from Badkot and fell in love with her, Badkot Police Station SHO D S Kohli said. The man came to Badkot and asked the girl to meet him, but she refused to, police said. When Sharma insisted to meet, the girl reported the matter to the police, they said. Depressed, Sharma slit his throat with a knife, police said. The police found Sharma bleeding on the road and rushed him to a hospital where his condition was said to be "out of danger". A case was registered against Sharma under different sections of the Indian Penal Code, action will be initiated against him after he recovers, Uttarkashi SP Pankaj Bhatt said.
