Days after remains of two minor girls were unearthed, police Tuesday arrested a 28-year old man who allegedly raped and killed them and another girl and buried the bodies in abandoned irrigation wells in a village in Telangana. M Srinivas Reddy, resident of Hajipur village in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, was arrested Tuesday following his interrogation, police said. A lift mechanic, he had also allegedly killed a woman in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh in 2016 and was arrested a year later along with four others. He was out on bail in the case, they said. The serial killer, a bachelor, was addicted to alchol and used to watch porn movies on his mobile phone, police said. A BJP corporator and nine aides have been booked for allegedly assaulting a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena activist in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, police said Tuesday. Late Monday night, BJP corporator Vijay Chiplekar and his aides attacked MNS' Prashant Jadhav (35) in Shubhangan complex in Kamothe over the issue of installing mobile phone towers there, an official said. "The incident has been captured in the CCTV network installed in the building. We have booked Chiplekar and his aides for voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons as well as other offences. A bench of Justices Arun Mishra and U U Lalit was told by two forensic auditors -- Pawan Agrawal and Ravi Bhatia -- that they have received notices from I-T department and the Economic Offence Wing seeking the audit report as also their presence to explain the same. The top court, which accepted the report, allowed the forensic auditors to share a copy with the investigating agencies. "It is brought to our notice that Commissioner of Police, Economic Offences Wing requires Report of the Forensic Auditors. We permit the Forensic Auditors to furnish the Report to the Economic Offences Wing but they shall not be summoned for any purpose whatsoever to aid in the investigation," the bench said. The Bombay High Court Tuesday set free a Nashik man who was sentenced to death last year by a court here for killing a 32-year-old woman and her 6-year-old child. A bench of justices BP Dharmadhikari and P D Naik held that the police failed to carry out proper investigation and build a watertight case against convict Ramdas Shinde. The bench, therefore, dismissed the Maharashtra government's plea seeking confirmation of the death penalty, and upheld Shinde's appeals challenging his conviction and sentence. On April 26 last year, the court in Nashik had convicted and sentenced Shinde for stabbing to death the woman and her child, who stayed as tenants in his father's property. The Supreme Court on Tuesday set aside the Centre's decision to merge National Spot Exchange Ltd (NSEL) with Financial Technologies India Ltd (FTIL), which is now known as 63 Moon Technologies Ltd. A bench comprising justices R F Nariman and Vineet Saran delivered the judgement on a batch of petitions filed by 63 Moon Technologies Ltd challenging the Bombay High Court's December 2017 verdict upholding the Centre's decision to merge NSEL with FTIL. In February 2016, the Centre had passed a final amalgamation order in terms of the provision of the Companies Act merging FTIL and NSEL. As per the order, all the assets and liabilities of NSEL would become assets and liabilities of FTIL. The government's order was challenged in the high court which dismissed the petition in December 2017. The wife of a Shiv Sena MP and 17 party workers were Tuesday given one year jail terms by a court here in connection with an incident in which a police constable was injured in a clash between Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Sena workers in 2014. Kamini Shewale, wife of Rahul Shewale, sitting MP from South Central Lok Sabha constituency, and the party workers were sentenced after sessions court judge D K Gudadhe found them guilty under sections 149 (unlawful assembly), 427 (mischief) of the Indian Penal Code. However, they were acquitted of all other charges, including attempt to murder. Constable Vikas Thorbole was injured during the clash on Lok Sabha polling day in April, 2014 after both Sena and MNS alleged that cash was being distributed to voters in suburban Trombay, part of the Mumbai South Central seat. Based on the statement of the constable, an FIR was registered and 18 people, including Kamini Shewale, were named as accused in the case.
A sessions court here Tuesday sentenced Narayan Sai, the son of jailed self-styled 'godman' Asaram, to life imprisonment in a rape case filed against him by a former woman disciple in 2013. Additional Sessions Judge P S Gadhvi handed down the life sentence to 47-year-old Sai and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on him. The court also directed Sai to pay Rs 5 lakh as a compensation to the victim. Sai's father Asaram was convicted by a Jodhpur court in a rape case in April last year and sentenced to life term. Besides Sai, lodged at the Lajpore Jail here since his arrest in 2013, the court on Tuesday sentenced his three aides, including two women, to 10 years each in jail for various offences related to the case. An alleged victim in the Muzaffarpur shelter home sexual assault case has turned hostile before a Delhi court, sources said Tuesday. The alleged victim, who is one of the prosecution witnesses in the case, was declared hostile before Additional Sessions Judge Saurabh Kulshreshtha, after she failed to recognise two of the accused, the court sources said. The proceedings are being conducted in-camera. Meanwhile, advocate Pramod Kumar Dubey, appearing for the key accused, Brajesh Thakur, claimed that the CBI was tutoring the witnesses. The CBI has arrested a South Delhi Municipal Corporation official for allegedly receiving a bribe of Rs 25,000, officials said Tuesday. Sukhram Meena, Sanitary Inspector, was arrested for signing the attendance register relating to sanitation workers working under the complainant. "The CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 from the complainant," a Central Bureau of Investigation spokesperson said. He said searches were conducted at the official and residential premises of the accused, which led to the recovery of documents relating to financial transactions.
An FIR has been lodged against Jharkhand People's Party candidate for the Jamshedpur Lok Sabha seat Surya Singh Besra and another party leader for allegedly trying to bribe a scribe, the police said Tuesday. A 21-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly giving a false statement in an accidental firing case where his "friend" had sustained an injury, police said Tuesday. The accused, identified as Paras Arora, a resident of Shalimar Bagh, was arrested from the area on Monday, officials said, adding that his accomplice Aamir Khan was still absconding. A firing incident was reported on April 24 at Shalimar Bagh Police Station from Fortis Hospital, they said. During interrogation, Arora said he was fond of weapons and had purchased a pistol from Khan for Rs 20,000. The Supreme Court directed all states and Union Territories on Tuesday to "forthwith comply" with its last year's direction to provide medical facilities to retired chief justices and judges of high courts, including their spouses and dependent family members, at par with sitting judges. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi took note of a report filed by senior advocate P H Parekh, assisting the top court as an amicus curiae in the matter, which stated that only six states have provided the requisite information to him in pursuance of the court's October 24 direction. It had directed that retired chief justices and judges of high courts, including their spouses and dependent family members be given medical facilities at par with sitting judges and the expenses for treatment in private hospitals be reimbursed without prior approval of the state government. The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) Tuesday allowed insolvency proceedings against Reliance Communication (RCom) after the Anil Ambani-led firm withdrew a challenge to such a move. RCom will be admitted back to insolvency proceedings after the NCLAT allowed the debt-laden firm to withdraw its petition challenging a decision of the Mumbai-bench of National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) to initiate such proceedings. RCom had moved the application to withdraw its challenge to the insolvency order after its board felt insolvency was the best course after failed attempts to revive the firm. An NCLAT bench headed by Chairman Justice S J Mukhopadhaya ruled that moratorium on liabilities would start. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested a sanitary inspector in South Delhi Municipal Corporation for allegedly accepting a bribe to the tune of Rs 25000.The accused is said to have allegedly accepted the bribe for signing the Hazri (attendance) register related to sanitary workers. CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed demanding and accepting the bribe, the CBI spokesperson said.The accused official, identified as Sukhram Meena, was posted at ward number 13S Tilak Nagar. The CBI team conducted searches at the accused residential premises, where documents related to financial transactions were recovered, added the spokesperson.The accused was presented before the court and has been sent to judicial remand. BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje Tuesday came out in support of a journalist who was arrested recently for allegedly circulating a 'fake letter' purportedly written by State Home minister M B Patil to Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi two years ago on religious minority tag to Lingayats. Patil had termed the letter fake and alleged that it was a conspiracy against him by his rivals. The MP wanted to know why the 'fake letter' based on which journalist Hemanth Kumar, reportedly a BJP sympathiser, was arrested, not investigated when it first surfaced in 2018.
