SC issues notice to Centre on Rafale review petitions

Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a formal notice to Centre on review petitions filed against its December 14 judgment on Rafale deal in which it had refused to order a probe into the deal of procuring 36 Rafale fighter jets from France.Attorney General KK Venugopal has sought four weeks time to file a reply on the review. Chit fund case: SC asks CBI to place evidence for seeking custodial interrogation of Kolkata's ex-CP

The Supreme Court Tuesday asked CBI to furnish evidence for seeking custodial interrogation of former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar in Saradha chit fund case, saying it has to be satisfied that the agency's request was "bona fide" and not for "political purposes". A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said CBI has to place material which can "even very remotely" show that Kumar, who was earlier heading West Bengal Police SIT probing the chit fund scam, has something to do with either destruction or disappearance of evidence related to the case. "We have to be satisfied that you (CBI) are seeking this (custodial interrogation of Kumar) in bona fide interest of justice and not for political purposes," said the bench, which also comprised Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna. Narayan Sai, son of Asaram gets life imprisonment for rape

A Surat Sessions Court on Tuesday sentenced Narayan Sai, son of jailed self-styled godman Asaram, to rigorous life imprisonment in a rape case.The court convicted Sai on April 26 and decided to pronounce the quantum of punishment on April 30.Two Surat-based sisters had approached police in 2013 alleging that they were raped by Asaram and Narayan Sai.One of the victims accused Sai of raping her multiple times between 2002 and 2005 while she was staying at his ashram.Sai, 47, was arrested in December 2013 from Pipli in Haryana.Asaram is serving a life sentence after being convicted in a rape case in Jodhpur.

'Unforgivable damage' will occur if bail is not extended: Nawaz Sharif tells Pak SC

Ailing former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday filed an application in the Supreme Court seeking an extension in his six-week bail for medical treatment, saying "unforgivable damage" will occur if his plea is rejected. On March 26, the Supreme Court suspended Sharif's sentence in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption case and granted him bail for six weeks but with a condition that he would not leave Pakistan during that period. The application calls for an extension in bail which expires on May 7 until the verdict of his review petition of the March 26 order, which seeks permission for Sharif to leave the country, Dawn newspaper reported. Gold bars worth Rs 3 crore seized from technician at Trivandrum International Airport

An alert Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel on Tuesday nabbed an air conditioning technician at the Trivandrum International Airport and seized 9.9 kilograms of gold bars worth approximately Rs 3 crore.The accused, employed with MJ Property Maintenance Service Private Limited, has been identified as Annesh Kumar.Assistant Sub-Inspector Vikas Raj, deployed at the staff gate of the airport, on suspicion called the accused for body-frisking but he ignored it and walked inside the terminal building.While returning, he was seen dropping something in a dustbin nearby.During frisking, 3.6 kg of gold bar wrapped in the black tape was recovered from him. Allegations against CJI: Ex SC employee not to participate in-house inquiry panel proceedings

A former apex court employee, who levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, decided Tuesday not to participate any more before the in-house inquiry panel. The employee said in a statement that Tuesday was the third day she had gone to participate before the three-member panel headed by Justice S A Bobde. "But due to serious concerns and reservations, I am no longer participating in these in-house committee proceedings," she said in a statement.

SC asks Rahul Gandhi to file by May 6 affidavit in contempt case

The Supreme Court on Tuesday gave time to Congress president Rahul Gandhi till May 6 to file a fresh affidavit in a contempt case against him for attributing the 'chowkidar chor hai' remark to the apex court's April 10 Rafale case order.The direction was given by a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.Appearing for Gandhi, advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi told the bench also comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna, that his client will express "apology" in the affidavit."I have wrongly attributed the remark to the court. Delhi HC directs police to submit status report on missing teen

The Delhi High Court has directed police to submit a status report within two weeks on a teenage boy who went missing from K G Marg in 2013. A bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Vinod Goel also ordered constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising competent officers to probe the matter and issued notice to the Delhi government, UIDAI and others. The high court also directed the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to provide all the relevant information available with them in respect of the missing 17-year-old boy in a sealed cover before May 21 so that the investigation can proceed in the right direction without losing any more time. Asaram's son Narayan Sai gets life imprisonment in rape case

A sessions court here Tuesday sentenced Narayan Sai, the son of jailed self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, to life imprisonment in a rape case filed against him by a former woman devotee in 2013. Additional Sessions Judge P S Gadhvi handed down the sentence to Sai and asked him to pay a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the victim. Besides Sai, lodged at the Lajpore Jail here since 2013, the court sentenced his three aides, including two women, to 10 years each in jail after holding them guilty of various offences. His driver Rajkumar alias Ramesh Malhotra was sentenced to six months in prison. The court had convicted Sai in the case on April 26 under IPC sections 376 (rape), 377 (unnatural offences), 323 (assault), 506-2 (criminal intimidation) and 120-B (conspiracy). Rohingiya woman, 3 children held in Tripura

Four Rohingya Muslims refugees a woman and three children -- were arrested in Tripura's Unakoti district for staying in India without valid documents, police said on Tuesday. A 29-year old college professor died Tuesday after a tree fell on him when he took shelter under it to escape rain accompanied by gale at a village in the district, police said. Govindan of Perumthalaiyur village along with his friend was proceeding to nearby Kavindapady on a two-wheeler when the incident occurred Monday night. The 56-year old man, who killed the wife of a retired IAF Wing Commander in Dwarka, had met her on a mobile dating application and on the night of the crime coaxed her to drink copious amount of liquor before smothering her with a pillow, police said Tuesday. Court allows Tharoor to travel abroad

A Delhi court Tuesday allowed Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, an accused in a case related to wife Sunanda Pushkar's death, to travel abroad. Special Judge Arun Bhardwaj granted permission to Tharoor to go to the USA from May 5-20. In his application, Tharoor had claimed that he has to attend certain press conferences there. While granting him bail in the case, the court had directed not to leave the country without its prior permission. Teen kills self with father's gun after failing to clear JEE

A 19-year-old student allegedly committed suicide Tuesday by shooting himself at home here after he failed to clear the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains Test, police said. The teenager shot himself dead with a double-barrel gun, belonging to his father, a retired army jawan, who is now working as a security guard with a private bank, a police official said.
