Police in the world's highest town are investigating the mysterious killing of seven men whose bodies were found with gunshot wounds inside a Peruvian gold mine. The prosecutors' office said in a statement Wednesday that they were "directing the first steps in the investigation to clarify the alleged murder of seven miners" at La Rinconada gold mine. Seven bodies with gunshot wounds to the head were discovered Monday by security guards inside a tunnel, located more than 5,000 meters (16,000 feet) above sea level. The mine's manager Policarpio Calla said none of the dead men were employed at the mine, where work had been suspended for the Easter holidays. Prosecutors in El Salvador have seized 61 properties linked to a massive corruption case against exiled former president Mauricio Funes, accused of embezzling USD 351 million from state coffers. State prosecutors Wednesday said they seized real estate worth over USD 24 million, including shops, offices, luxury homes and a ranch. "The properties are passing provisionally under the control of the state," the attorney general's office said in a statement. Nicaragua granted Funes and his family asylum in 2016, and this month refused a Salvadoran Supreme Court request to extradite the former president. Seven members of a gang allegedly involved in kidnapping of children and selling them were arrested and three babies including a month-old girl were rescued from the buyers, police said Wednesday. Prime accused V Gangadhar Reddy along with six others, including four women, were nabbed from different parts of Andhra Pradesh by special teams of Hyderabad Police and based on their information three babies were rescued, they said. Apart from the infant girl, the two children were boys between two and two-and-a-half-years-old, police said. The accused kidnapped the three babies from different parts of Hyderabad and Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh between October 2018 and March this year and the babies were sold in the range of Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 3.10 lakh, police said. Bihar Police has filed a case against three members of the Buddhist-Thai Bharat Society for allegedly sexually molesting a minor girl multiple times since January this year.A case has been registered under relevant section of IPC, POCSO Act and SC/ST Act on April 18 against the three persons."The case is being investigated. The Krishna Police Wednesday said it has arrested five journalists, working with a regional news channel, for allegedly cheating a group of tribal youths by promising them jobs in the Office of Capital Region Development Authority. Mylavaram Circle Inspector K Nageswara Rao said the five accused, who allegedly collected Rs 21 lakh from three tribal youths in 2014, were arrested Wednesday from a hotel under A Konduru police station limits. The accused allegedly promised them employment as Village Assistant and Land Executive in the CRDA. They also handed over a purported appointment letter to one of the victims, Bukhya Swamy of Deeplanagar in A Konduru Mandal, Krishna district, the CI said. Candace Marie Claiborne, 63, was a Department of State office management specialist based in Beijing and Shanghai who became involved beginning in 2007 with two men the Justice Department said she knew were agents of China's Ministry of State Security. A local court Wednesday sentenced four people to life imprisonment for killing a Dalit man over a love affair in 2011. Special Judge V K Dwivedi convicted Amit (27), Hitesh (27), Kapil (26) and Prem Prakash (27) under Section 302 (murder) and other relevant sections of the IPC and awarded the sentence. Public Prosecutor Vishal Anand Shrivastava told reporters that the four men were found guilty of killing Rohit Sonkar (30), who belonged to the Scheduled Caste community, with knives near Ushaganj on May 28, 2011. According to the prosecutor, Sonkar was in love with Amit's sister. However, her family members were against it. Ultimately, Amit and his three friends hatched a conspiracy to kill the Dalit man. Software engineer Sumit Kumar, who allegedly killed his wife and three children here last week, has been arrested from Karnataka, police said Wednesday. The Ghaziabad Police arrested Kumar with the help of the Udipi Police on Tuesday night. Three teams were deputed to nab him. On the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, Kumar had allegedly served sedative-laced drinks to his wife Anshu Bala (32), son Prathimesh (5), daughter Akriti and son Arav (twins aged 4 years) and then slit their throats, police had said. The bodies were found 22 hours after the incident, following a video posted by Kumar on his family WhatsApp group in which he admitted to the killings. A 22-year-old man was arrested from Dwarka's Najafgarh area for allegedly killing his friend over an old enmity, police said Wednesday. A three-year-old child, who was run over and dragged by a car for almost 20 metres in northwest Delhi's Bharat Nagar on Monday, succumbed to injuries on Wednesday, police said. According to a senior police official, the accused driver, identified as Aas Mohammed (37), is the uncle of the deceased child Gulam. Police had earlier arrested the boy's uncle on charges of rash and negligent driving but he was granted bail. The incident occurred at 5.17 pm on Monday when Mohammed, who is a paint contractor, dropped Gulam to his home. After dropping off Gulam, Mohammed received a phone call. Police have cracked the brutal murder of a woman whose torso was found dumped in a drum in Bhiwandi in Thane district of Maharashtra by arresting her powerloom worker husband from Kolkata, an official said Wednesday. The highly decomposed torso was found on April 13 in a plastic drum. According to the official, the accused, identified as Hamid Sardar killed his wife Sabina Bibi Sardar because he disapproved her working in a bar. Both are residents of Bhiwandi. More than one kg of gold worth Rs 44.4 lakh was seized in three separate cases at the International airport here and one person arrested, the customs department said Wednesday. Two persons, who arrived by separate flights from Dubai and Colombo, were caught carrying 190 grams of gold and 202 grams respectively. One of them had concealed 130 grams in his rectum, while the other also adopted the same mode, a customs release said. In the other case, one person who arrived from Muscat was found carrying 972 grams of gold. The man concealed the gold in a specially designed cotton belt that was tied over his innerwear, the release said.
