The ruling CPI(M)'s state secretary, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Monday said nobody attempted to settle the rape allegation levelled against his son Binoy Kodiyeri by a Mumbai-based woman. Balakrishnan, who addressed the media after a meeting of the party's state committee, said he came to know about the complaint only after a court sent a notice to his house in January. A former bar dancer from Mumbai has alleged in her complaint that she had been raped by Binoy after falsely promising to marry her. The city police Monday obtained non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against 10 people for allegedly provoking a mob for pelting stones, targeting vehicles and the houses of accused in a murder case. Police Monday said the killing of an elderly couple and their attendant in southwest Delhi's Vasant Vihar might have been carried out by a man and a woman known to the attendant. It is also suspected that the accused had come with an intention to harm the nursing attendant, but ended up killing the couple to eliminate witnesses, they said. The bodies of the elderly couple, Vishnu Mathur (78) and Shashi Mathur (75), and their nursing attendant, Khushbu Nautiyal (24), were found with their throats slit on Sunday morning. The alleged killer of Bhiwandi Congress leader Manoj Mhatre who has been on run for more than two years has been nabbed from Uttar Pradesh, Thane police said Monday. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Crime, N T Kadam said Udayban alias Guddu Ramavat Singh, 43, was nabbed from his house in Kareban village in the wee hours of June 22. Mhatre, 52, who was the leader of the house in Bhiwandi-Nizampur civic body, was shot at and stabbed on February 14, 2017 in front of his Anjur Phata residence in Bhiwandi. A special court Monday rejected the bail pleas of three senior doctors of a civic hospital arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of a junior colleague. Special court judge P B Jadhav, while rejecting the pleas of Hema Ahuja, Bhakti Meher and Ankita Khandelwal, said there was a likelihood of the accused persons absconding or tampering with evidence. The nation's highest court, in a 6-3 decision, struck down a federal prohibition on the registration of trademarks deemed to be "immoral or scandalous". The court held that such a prohibition violates the First Amendment right to free speech. Justice Samuel Alito said barring the FUCT trademark amounts to "viewpoint discrimination." A woman was arrested Monday for allegedly killing her 60-year-old husband at their house over a property dispute in Mahakala village in Maharashtra's Jalna district, police said. The accused, Shardabai Mule, is a second wife of the deceased Manik Mule, said assistant police inspector, Gondi police station, H V Ware. He said the deceased had allotted four acres of land to his first wife and two acres to Shardabai. On the possible trigger behind the crime, the police officer said Shardabai had opposed her husband's decision to adopt a son of his first brother-in-law, as both his wives couldn't bear a child. Two people were killed in a clash that took place between two groups over a dispute during a panchayat meeting in a village here on Monday, police said. Four police officials were suspended after the incident came to light, they said. The incident occurred when the groups led by Sonu (25) and Maya Prakash Gupta (55) clashed in Jumai village, which falls in the Roza area, Superintendent of Police (City) Dinesh Tripathi said. While Sonu was shot dead, Gupta died of injuries sustained after being beaten with sticks. He succumbed while undergoing treatment at a hospital, Tripathi said. Police lodged FIRs in this connection but no arrests have been made so far, he said. Meanwhile, four policemen have been suspended with immediate effect for laxity, Superintendent of Police Y Chinnappa said. A 50-year old sweeperof a primary school allegedly attempted to rape a girl student in a class room and was thrashed by locals in a town in neighbouring Peddapalli district Monday, police said. Six policemen were injured after villagers in Madhya Pradesh's Rajgarh district allegedly assaulted them on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, an official said. Two persons were sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by a court here on Monday for smuggling drugs. Mandi special judge R K Sharma ordered the convicts, Pradeep Kumar and Sunil Kumar, to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh each, failing which they would have to undergo a simple imprisonment of one year. According to the prosecution, 1.31 kg of charas was recovered from their possession at Chamukha near Sundernagar town of Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district three years ago. The charas was kept inside a bag under the driver's seat of their car. A case was registered under Section 20 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and the police arrested the accused, who are from Haryana. The prosecution examined 11 witnesses to prove its case.
