A local court here Monday granted bail to an American aid worker, who was arrested last week for allegedly molesting a judicial magistrate at her home. The Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class D G Kharshiing granted bail to Theodore M Moallem with a condition that he would not leave the jurisdiction of the court and cooperate with the investigation, his counsel S K Joshi told PTI. Moallem was granted bail with two sureties of Rs 30,000 each, he said. The American has been in India for quite sometime and has aid organisations working in various states, besides being associated with an organisation for the blind people in Meghalaya. Three persons were arrested on Monday in connection with the death of a 24-year-old man, who was thrashed by a mob for alleged theft and seen in a purported video being forced to chant "Jai Shri Ram" and "Jai Hanuman", police said. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been set up to look into the death of Tabrez Ansari, who was declared "brought dead" by doctors at the Tata Main Hospital in Jamshedpur on June 22, they added. Seraikela-Kharsawan Superintendent of Police (SP) Karthik S said on June 17, Ansari and two others had entered a house in Seraikela village at night allegedly with an intention to commit theft. The Bombay High Court Monday sought a sealed report from an expert team of doctors at the state-run J J Hospital on the medical condition of diamantaire Mehul Choksi and if he was in a position to travel. Choksi, accused of money laundering by the Enforcement Directorate in the multi-crore Punjab National Bank scam, is presently in Antigua and has told the high court that he is unable to travel to India due to ill health. The bench on Monday directed Choksi's advocate to submit all of his client's latest medical reports to the team of doctors at the JJ Hospital's cardiology department. The hospital shall, on July 9, submit the sealed report to the court with its opinion on whether Choksi can travel, the bench said. The court will hear the plea on July 10. Choksi has claimed that he left India in January 2018 to undergo a bypass surgery and not to avoid prosecution. Haryana Jail Minister Krishan Lal Panwar on Monday said the matter relating to granting parole to jailed self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh will be decided after the police chief of the area concerned sends a report to the court.The jail administration has submitted a report on Ram Rahim's parole to the police commissioner who will send it to court for approval, he said.Ram Rahim is currently lodged at Sunaria jail in Rohtak after being convicted and sentenced in two cases of rape and for the murder of a journalist."All convicts are entitled to parole after serving for two years. The government Monday approved the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill that proposes hefty penalties for violation of traffic norms including up to Rs 10,000 fine for not providing way to emergency vehicles and Rs 10,000 for driving despite disqualification, an official source said. The Bill, which was pending for approval in the Rajya Sabha, lapsed after the term of the 16th Lok Sabha ended. "The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill. It provides steep penalties for violation of various traffic norms," the source said. In the area of road safety, stricter provisions have been proposed for offences like juvenile driving, driving without licence, dangerous driving, drunken driving, over-speeding and overloading. The Bill proposes Rs 10,000 fine for not providing way to emergency vehicles and Rs 10,000 for driving despite disqualification. The Income Tax Department has issued notices in 380 cases involving undisclosed assets of over Rs 12,260 crore under the foreign black money act, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said Monday. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, she said prosecution has been launched in 68 cases. "As an outcome of the actions taken by the I-T Department under Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act, 2015, as on April 30, 2019, notices under the Act have been issued in over 380 cases involving undisclosed foreign assets and income valued over Rs 12,260 crore," Sitharaman said. The Department takes actions, like searches, surveys, enquiries, assessment of income, levy of tax/interest/penalty and launching prosecution, against those possessing black money. As per data, the Department has conducted searches on 983 groups and seized Rs 1,584 crore in 2018-19, up from 582 cases involving seizure amount of Rs 993 crore in 2017-18 fiscal.
A sheriff in South Texas says Border Patrol agents have discovered the bodies of four people, including three children, within a wildlife management area near the border. Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra tells the McAllen Monitor that the dead appeared to be two infants, a toddler and a woman in her early 20s. The sheriff tells the newspaper that they may have been dead for a few days by the time they were discovered Sunday in Las Palomas Wildlife Management area near the Rio Grande River. The newspaper reports that area is known locally as El Rincon del Diablo, or the Devil's Corner, and is often used for illegal border crossings. The Bombay High Court Monday admitted appeals filed by brothers of Sohrabuddin Shaikh, who was allegedly killed in a fake encounter in 2005, challenging acquittal of the 22 persons, including police officers from Gujarat and Rajasthan, by a special court in 2018. In its verdict, the special CBI court had observed that the prosecution had failed to establish a cogent case to suggest that there had been any conspiracy to kill Shaikh and others -- his wife Kausar Bi and his associate Tulsi Prajapati -- and that the accused persons had any role in it. The court had also stated that there was no denying that Shaikh and the others had been killed. As per the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Shaikh, a gangster, and Kausar Bi were killed separately in November 2005 by the Gujarat ATS, and Prajapati in 2006 by the Rajasthan and Gujarat police, for allegedly being a witness to the fake encounter. Four local BJP leaders, including a woman, suffered injuries while burning an effigy during a protest in Warangal against the alleged sexual assault and murder of a nine-month-old girl, police said. The sanctioned strength of judges in the country is adequate but the persistent vacancies in the higher judiciary is leading to a heavy backlog of court cases, former Information Commissioner Shailesh Gandhi has said. For the persistent vacancy in the higher judiciary, Gandhi put part of the blame on the apex court's collegium itself, saying the truth is that the collegium has never recommended enough names to fill all vacancies. The former member of the Central Information Commission described the recent appointments in the apex court filling all its vacancies as an exception. Gandhi made the assertion in a letter to Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, who had recently written to the Union government suggesting constitutional amendments to increase the strength of the Supreme Court judges and to raise the retirement age of high court judges by three years. A Pakistani court on Monday ruled that the permission from the arbitration council was mandatory for Muslim men for second marriage, even if the husband has prior permission from the first wife. Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Athar Minallah issued a 12-page written ruling on Monday, according to which it is mandatory to take arbitration council's permission prior to second marriage, Geo TV reported. "A man who intends to contract another marriage during the subsistence of an existing marriage has to observe the procedure and fulfill the conditions prescribed by the legislature otherwise the consequences of imprisonment or fine or both could ensue," the court ruled. Nearly ten days after a gang of robbers attempted a daring heist at the office of a gold firm in Nashik and shot dead an employee, police have arrested the main accused from Surat, a top police officer said Monday. An accountability court on Monday extended till July 8 the physical remand of Faryal Talpur, the sister of former president Asif Ali Zardari, in a case related to money laundering through fake bank accounts. Talpur, 61, was arrested by the officials of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Islamabad, days after the anti-graft body apprehended her brother and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Zardari on June 10. The NAB presented Talpur before the court on Monday. Her counsel, Lateef Khosa, said that her client has nothing to do with Park Lane apartments and is not even its director, Geo Tv reported. An Army officer has been booked for allegedly damaging crop on a disputed agricultural land in his village in Maharashtra with the help of armed jawans, police said Monday. A case was registered at the Khed police station after a complaint by a woman, who said the officer, a Colonel in the Army, damaged crop on the land located in Khed taluka of Pune district, police said. A police officer said the Colonel's brother and Sunil Bharne, a relative of the complainant, are fighting over the ownership of the land in Gulani village, and the matter is pending before the sub-divisional magistrate, Khed. Bharne, whose name is on the 7/12 extract of the land, had sowed soybean in the field. A Delhi court has convicted a man here and later granted him bail for flouting Supreme Court orders on bursting firecrackers beyond the permitted hours. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jitendra Singh convicted Delhi resident Mayank Singh under Indian Penal Code Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant). The court then admonished Singh and granted him bail. "Keeping in view the facts and circumstances of the case and also the fact that the convict is facing trial for bursting the firecrackers, I am of considered view that ends of justice would be met if the convict is admonished," the judge said. A 21-year-old Nepalese woman has been arrested for cheating an Indian man of Rs 23 lakh after befriending him on Facebook. The woman from Mahottari district in southern Nepal was arrested from Kathmandu. She befriended Shripal Jain, 38, from Maharastra, on Facebook by pretending to be the member of a rich family in Nepal, according to Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Circle. Later the woman told Jain that she will pass on her family business to him. She also invited Jain to Nepal to discuss her business plans. The woman took Jain into confidence and asked for Rs 23 lakh on the pretext of paying a huge amount for customs clearance of some goods sent by her father in India. After taking the money she disappeared. Jain filed a complaint with police which searched her rented room in Kathmandu. They recovered nearly Rs 20 lakh in cash and some documents. The police have initiated legal action against the woman.
