Three people have been arrested after a BJP leader's brother was allegedly strangled after an altercation over the parking of a vehicle in Gorakhpur town of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, police said. Satyendra Singh had gone to meet his brother, Upendra Nath Singh, state secretary, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Kisan Morcha, at Sri Ram Puram colony in Mohaddipur. He tried to park his scooter near the house when a neighbour, Shashank Jaiswal (22), objected to it as he wanted to park his car at the same spot, said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shalabh Mathur. An altercation between the two followed, with Jaiswal's father, brother and mother joining in, following which Satyendra was strangled, the SSP said. Three people have been arrested and one taken into custody, the officer said, adding that an FIR had been lodged and the body sent for post-mortem.
A policeman's gun went off accidentally at the high-security state secretariat 'Nabanna' on Saturday without causing harm to anyone, police said. A police officer said a shot went off from the service rifle of a State Armed Police constable, Sashanka Mondal, who was on duty at the north gate at 12.27 pm on Saturday. It appeared to be a case of accidental firing, he said. As senior police officers rushed to the gate on hearing the gunshot, Mondal was whisked away for questioning and his rifle examined, the officer added. The bullet had hit the bunker and there was no report of any casualty or injury to anyone, the officer said. The constable claimed the bullet went off from his rifle accidentally as he was preparing for change of shift. "Prima facie, it appeared to be a case of accidental firing," the police officer said. A court in Kerala on Saturday denied bail to BJP General Secretary K Surendran in a case of alleged involvement in violent protests at Sabarimala earlier this month. Surendran was arrested earlier this week from Nilackal, the base camp of Sabarimala, after he refused to go back despite a request from the police. He was produced before a local court at Ranni in Pathanamthitta and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days. Later he was granted conditional bail. Police claimed to have cracked a case of robbery of Rs 1 crore in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district and arrested eight people in this connection, officials said Saturday. The accused on October 26 boarded a Bolero vehicle and intercepted a goods carrier truck on a highway near Barwal Morh in the district. They looted Rs 1 crore at gunpoint from the goods carrier, police said. Police registered a case and investigation started, they said. During investigation, number of suspicious persons were interrogated and after sustained efforts, the police succeeded in unearthing the case and arrested eight accused involved in it, they said. They were identified as Kiran Bhagat alais Chottu, Pintu Jamwal, Gourav Kumar Gautam, Vikas Talwar, Ajay Kumar, Yogesh Salgotra, Rajat Kagial alais Raju and Varun Singh, officials said. Punjab police on Saturday claimed to have nabbed the man who allegedly threw a grenade on a religious congregation at Nirankari Bhavan in Amritsar last Sunday leaving three persons dead, the second arrest in the case. Weapons including a .32 bore pistol, a US made pistol, four magazines and 25 live cartridges have been recovered from the accused identified as Avtar Singh, Director General of Police Suresh Arora told reporters here. Officials say a man has been arrested after a British Transport Police officer was stabbed outside a train station in east London. Police said late Friday night that the officer is being treated in a hospital with injuries that are not thought to be life threatening. The stabbing happened outside Ilford Station while the officer was on duty. The suspect has not been named or charged. The chairman of the transport police federation Nigel Goodband said the attack was "totally unprovoked" and part of an "epidemic" of knife crimes and attacks on police. A 22-year-old woman was allegedly raped in her house here by three men who made a video of the incident and threatened to make it public, police said Saturday. The incident took place Friday in Rampuri locality under Civil Lines Police Station area, SHO DK Tyagi said. According to a complaint lodged by the vicitm's mother, the three accused entered the house and raped the woman. The Supreme Court has spared the gallows to a man who was convicted in the sexual assault-cum-murder case, involving an 8-year-old girl in Pratapgarh, Rajasthan, in July 2013.In September 2016, the Rajasthan High Court ordered the execution of the accused, Parhlad, who was convicted in the case of sexual assault and murder of the victim. However, a bench, of the Supreme Court consisting Justice NV Ramana, Justice Mohan M Shantanagoudar and Justice MR Shah was of the view that "there was no evidence of sexual offense and hence the punishment can be awarded in the murder case only."In addition, the bench also examined the medical report of the deceased, which did not indicate any attempt of sexual violence. A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her 20-year-old neighbour in Sambhalheda village here, police said Saturday. SHO Kushalpal Singh said the incident took place Friday. According to a complaint by her father, Mohsin entered into their house and took her to another house in the neighbourhood where he raped her. A middle-aged couple suffocated to death and three members of the family were injured Saturday when a fire erupted in their sixth floor apartment in a high-rise in Prahaladnagar locality here, police said. The fire broke out in the wee hours in the flat of Achal Shah (50) in the 11-storey building, a police official said. The cause of the fire was not known immediately, said Anandnagar police station inspector S J Baloch. "All five members of the family were found unconscious and were rushed to a private hospital early Saturday, where two of them were declared dead. They might have died of suffocation," said Baloch. A home guard was crushed to death by a car carrying liquor here Saturday, the police said. The incident took place at Sadbhavana Chowk where a patrol team had been deployed following information that two cars, moving at great speed, had jumped the Rajauli check post, Superintendent of Police Sujit Kumar said. They intercepted a car which was carrying a huge quantity of liquor both country made and foreign, the SP said. Soon another car, carrying liquor, came at a great speed and it knocked down home guard Kailash Chaudhary when he tried to stop it. Chaudhary succumbed to injuries at a hospital. The car was later caught and its sole occupant arrested. The bottles of liquor found inside the car bear the seal of Jharkhand excise department, he said. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara on Saturday said the state government would soon take a call on banning the organisations involved in the killing of noted journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh. Speaking to reporters here, Parameshwara said, "No discussions have taken place regarding the organisations involved in the crime, but shortly we will take a decision on that." The SIT probing the killing of Lankesh had Friday filed an additional charge sheet naming Sanatan Sanstha, a Hindu outfit and 18 accused in the crime.
