Three persons were arrested in separate incidents from Jammu and Kashmir's Samba and Doda districts on Friday for allegedly smuggling illicit liquor, police said. During a routine checking, a police party intercepted an Alto car at Main Chowk in Samba's Vijaypur area. A search of the car, which was coming from Jammu, led to the recovery of 500 bottles of illicit liquor, they said. The car's driver, identified as Balkar Singh, was arrested on the spot, they added. A case has been registered at the Vijaypur police station and a probe has been launched, the police said. The remaining two persons were arrested from Seri Bazar and Forest Gali areas of Doda's Bhaderwah tehsil, they said. The police recovered 74 bottles of illicit liquor from Sandeep alias Manu and 42 bottles from Ganesh Singh. Cases have been registered against both of them, the police said.
A man, who was on death row after being convicted by the high court of raping and murdering an eight-year-old girl in Rajasthan over five years ago, has got a reduced sentence of life term from the Supreme Court which acquitted him of the charge of sexually assaulting the minor. The court observed that since the man was acquitted for offence of raping the girl under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, it was not a "fit case" to impose death penalty on him as he was neither a habitual offender nor having any criminal background. "Be that as it may, since the offence of rape is not proved and as the offence of murder is proved beyond reasonable doubt, the accused (Prahlad) is liable to be convicted for the offence under section 302 (murder) IPC," a bench of justices N V Ramana, M M Shantanagoudar and M R Shah said. A youth hailing from south Kashmir was arrested with 100 grams of heroin in Jammu on Friday, police said. He was identified as Nisar Ahmed Gangroo, a resident of Anantnag district, they said. Gangroo was arrested from Valmiki Chowk after a police party got suspicious about his movements and recovered 100 grams of heroin from his possession after a search, the police said. A case has been registered in the matter and investigation is underway, they said.
The ambassador of the United Arab Emirates in London said Friday his government is studying whether to grant clemency to a convicted British academic sentenced to life in prison for espionage. Ambassador Sulaiman Hamid Almazroui said that academic Matthew Hedges' family has requested clemency and the government is considering it. He said the espionage case against the 31-year-old Hedges "was an extremely serious case" and that he had been convicted based on "compelling evidence" after a full and fair judicial process. "The crimes Mr. Hedges was accused of are extremely serious. For the UAE, like all countries, protecting our national security must be our first priority," he said. Polson Ltd has settled a case with markets regulator Sebi for alleged delay in compliance of public shareholding norms on payment of Rs 6.8 lakh towards settlement charges. The order came after the Mumbai-based company approached the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) with a plea under settlement regulations, proposing to pay a penalty without admission or denial of guilt. "The instant adjudication proceedings initiated against the applicant (Polson) ... are settled", Sebi said in a settlement order dated Nov 22. The regulator in May, 2018, appointed an adjudication officer to look into the matter of delayed compliance of the requirement to maintain the 25 per cent minimum public shareholding (MPS) by the company. Sebi, in its order passed in January this year, had noted that the company had made a delay of over 4 years (from June 2013 till October 2017) in complying with MPS requirement. With Justice Kothari taking oath, the number of judges in the Madras High Court has gone up to 61 as against the sanctioned strength of 75. He was administered the oath by the Chief Justice of Madras High Court VK Tahilramani. He will be second in the seniority list after the transfer of Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh to the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Prior to his transfer to the Madras High Court, Kothari was a judge in the Karnataka High Court. He had previously been a judge in the Rajasthan High Court for 11 years. A cab driver and his two children, including his daughter, were arrested here for allegedly manhandling a police inspector, an official said on Friday. The accused were identified as Bahadur Dwarka Prasad (50), his son Arun (22) and daughter Shweta (23), police said. Bahadur Prasad, an Ola cab driver, had picked up a passenger from Mumbai and dropped him in Thane on the night of November 21, the official said. Two men were killed after they fell off the newly-constructed Signature Bridge here after their sports bike rammed into a divider on Friday morning, police said. Initially, it was suspected that the victims were performing stunts. However, police in their investigation has ruled out that angle. This is the first such accident on the Signature Bridge since its inauguration by Chief Minister Arvind Kerjiwal on November 4. "Being a left turn, the possibility that they were performing stunts has been ruled out", a senior police officer said. Police were informed about it at 8.40 am following which they rushed to the spot, he said. One teen is dead and two others have been injured following a shooting at an Alabama mall prior to Black Friday shopping. Authorities say the shooting happened about 9:30 pm Thursday at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover, a nearby suburb of Birmingham. Police say a fight between two teens, including an 18-year-old, resulted in a gunfire exchange. One teen fled but was confronted by two Hoover police officers. Captain Gregg Rector said at a news conference that a Hoover officer "did engage that individual, shot him and he is dead on the scene." The second teen was hospitalised in serious condition. A 25-year-old Navi Mumbai man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court for killing his wife in 2014. Thane Principal District Judge V G Bisht Thursday also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on Nareshkumar Vishnu Sahu. A man has been arrested for allegedly fleeing with a truck transporting over a lakh eggs from Hyderabad in Telangana to Ambernath in Maharashtra's Thane district, police said Friday. The incident happened on November 18 and the accused, identified as Sadat, and three others fled with the truck after abducting its driver and his son, Deputy Commissioner of Police Deepak Deoraj said. The two were later dropped off at an isolated place, he said. Sadat was arrested from Mahapoli in Bhinwadi township while efforts were on to nab the other accused, he said. The eggs, valued at Rs 4.12 lakh, the truck and the car used in the crime have been recovered, he added.

A 22-year-old woman was allegedly strangulated to death by her husband following a dispute over dowry, police said Friday. Sonali was married to Ajit (22) for three years and was allegedly being harassed for not bringing enough dowry by her in-laws, the victim's father claimed in the police complaint. A 34-year-old Indian-origin man based in Australian has been jailed for three weeks here for molesting a Singaporean cabin crew member on board a Singapore-bound flight, a media report said Friday. Paranjape Niranjan Jayant, who works for a logistics firm, pleaded guilty to two charges of molestation of the 25-year-old Singaporean flight attendant in August and had one charge taken into consideration for sentencing. During the eight-hour flight from Sydney to Singapore, Jayant approached the flight attendant a few times to ask for her phone number, but she ignored him.
