A 22-year-old man allegedly committed suicide Thursday after shooting at his girlfriend following an altercation at a guest house here, police said. The woman, who survived the gunshot, was admitted to a hospital in Delhi where she is battling for life, they said. The couple, who were studying together at a coaching institute in Ghaziabad, had come to the guest house in Sector 63 where they had booked a room, police said. The man, identified as Mohit, hailed from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh and was living in a rented accommodation in Ghaziabad, officials said. "The couple had arrived at the guest house in the morning and the incident took place after an altercation between them," a police official said. A Delhi-based father-son duo, accused of killing a woman here, were remanded in police custody till November 30 by a court Thursday. The accused, Shivlal alias Shivaji Rao (39) and his son Mukesh Rao (19), are residents of Uttam Nagar in Delhi, Pune Police said. They allegedly shot Ekta Brijesh Bhati (37) dead at a housing society in Chandannagar here Wednesday morning. In the evening, when a police team traced them at Pune Railway Station, Shivlal allegedly opened fire, injuring inspector Gajanan Pawar of the Crime Branch. The UK government on Thursday admitted that errors were made in denying some Indian skilled professionals the right to live and work in the UK over a controversial clause in the immigration rules questioning their good conduct and character. The UK Home Office admitted that around 31 applications will be re-assessed at the conclusion of an internal review into the issue of visa applicants, largely from South Asian countries, being refused settlement rights over perceived dishonesty in reporting their earnings to the country's tax department. Among the 31 cases, 12 have been identified as incorrect refusals and will be overturned to give the applicants settlement rights in the UK. The remaining 19 cases will require more information from applicants before reconsidering their cases. The Syro Malabar Church has warned and sought explanation from Father Augustine Vattoly, a priest, for extending support to the nuns who had protested against Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal, facing rape charges. The Church, in a letter to Vattoly, has warned him of "ecclesiastical" consequences for organising a dharna in front of the Secretariat at Thiruvananthapuram in support of the nuns. Mulakkal was accused of repeatedly raping a nun and was arrested in September, but was released three weeks later on conditional bail. In her complaint to the Kottayam police in June, the nun had alleged that Mulakkal raped her at a guest house in Kuravilangad in May 2014 and later sexually exploited her on several occasions. However, Mulakkal has denied the charges. Two men were arrested for allegedly killing a 19-year-old man over a parking issue in outer Delhi's Sultanpuri area, police said Thursday. The accused persons, identified as Dinesh alias Mannu (25) and Deepak alias Ravi (28), were arrested at around 11 am from Pankha Road in Janakpuri, they said. On November 16 at around 3.30 pm, one Jatin and his friend Deepanker were in a market when Mannu along with his friend Deepak came there on a scooter and stopped the vehicle in front of them, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer) Seju Kuruvilla. An argument broke out between them after Jatin asked Mannu to park his scooter somewhere else. Mannu and his friend started beating Jatin. On seeing this, Deepanker ran and called Jatin's cousin Varun, who tried to pacify the situation, he said. Mannu, too, called his brother Ravi and others. Markets regulator Sebi on Thursday slapped a fine of Rs 65 lakh on Apollo Tyres for violating norms pertaining to buyback of shares. The ruling comes after the Securities Appellate Tribunal, in January 2017, had set aside the over Rs 1 crore penalty imposed by Sebi on Apollo Tyres in the matter and had directed the regulator to pass a fresh order. According to the tribunal, the overall penalty amount was in excess of the limit prescribed under the Sebi Act. It was alleged that shares of Apollo Tyres were bought back by the company and its promoters in contravention of the relevant section of the Companies Act and Sebi regulations. The violations were allegedly committed by the company in 2003. In a fresh order on Thursday, Sebi said,"The noticee (Apollo Tyres) had bought back a controlling block of shares as per the scheme, but did not comply with the provisions of buy-back Regulations". A day after recording the statement of a chief investigating officer in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh and Tulsiram Prajapati alleged fake encounter cases, the prosecution said Thursday that it was closing its case. Special prosecutor B P Raju informed trial court judge S J Sharma here that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has completed the examination of all its witnesses. The prosecution examined 210 witnesses, of which 92 turned hostile. Its last witnesses were chief investigating officers Amitabh Chaudhary and Sandeep Tamgadge. Besides, the CBI examined about 40 other officials. Other key witnesses included Sohrabuddin's brother Rubabuddin Shaikh and Azam Khan, an associate of Sohrabuddin and Tulsiram. An 18-year-old Pakistani intruder was detained Thursday along the India-Pakistan border in Rajasthan's Bikaner division, a Border Security Force (BSF) official said. A team of BSF's 125 battalion detained the Pakistani national in Hindumalkot area of Sriganganagar district. The accused is yet to reveal his name, BSF DIG M S Rathore told PTI. He said Rs 209 in Pakistani currency was seized from the accused. The accused will be jointly interrogated by intelligence agencies, the official said.
Twenty-eight newly appointed additional judges of the Allahabad High Court were sworn in by the Uttar Pradesh governor on Thursday. They were administered the oath of office were by Governor Ram Naik at a ceremony held behind the chamber of the chief justice here. A suspected drug peddler was arrested with 100 kg poppy in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district Thursday, police said. Based on a tip off, a police party intercepted a tractor at Gagwal and seized 100 kg of poppy, they said. An inter-state peddler identified as Saroop Singh, a native of Dadewali in Punjab's Gurdaspur district, was arrested after recovery of the contraband from the tractor, police said. A case was registered in this connection, they said.

A 55-year-old auto rickshaw driver died and a woman was injured after they were hit allegedly by an over-speeding car near Sabzi Mandi in North Delhi on Thursday, police said. The incident took pace at around 7 am, they said. An over speeding car first hit a 58-year-old woman who was waiting to cross the road near Baraf Khana at Subzi Mandi and then hit an auto rickshaw driver and eventually slided over the footpath after hitting a tree, a senior police officer said. Fearing the consequences, the driver of the car fled from the spot, he said. The auto rickshaw driver and the injured woman were rushed to a nearby hospital where the driver was declared brought dead by the hospital authorities. A bench of justices Siddharth Mridul and I S Mehta said journalistic licence does not give a person the right to make unsavoury allegations. "We are all in for free press but don't attribute motive to us," the bench said.
