The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed two social media platforms to block the weblinks of an offending article levelling "scandalous" allegations against a sitting judge of the high court. The court was hearing a plea in a contempt case against Swaminathan Gurumurthy, the editor of the Chennai-based weekly 'Thuglak' magazine, for his tweets against the judge. A bench of justices Hima Kohli and Manoj Kumar Ohri allowed the plea of advocate Rajshekhar Rao, on whose complaint the high court had initiated on its own the contempt proceedings, seeking to implead various persons and entities as respondents. The court allowed his application to replace Facebook India and Twitter India with their parent US-based firms, Facebook Inc and Twitter Inc, which are responsible for taking down the URLs from the platforms. Five people died and one sustained injuries in two separate accidents in Rajasthan's Kotputli town, police said Tuesday. Four people were killed when a mini-truck they were travelling in lost control and hit another truck coming from the opposite direction on the Jaipur-Delhi National Highway Tuesday, Assistant Sub-Inspector Kamlesh Kumar said. The deceased were identified as Om Prakash (52), Madanlal Meena (55), Ramphool Gurjar (60) and Vishram Yogi (41), police said. In another incident, a 24-year-old bike rider was killed after being hit by an unidentified vehicle on Monday night, they said. The victim was identified as Vaibhav Garg, officials said, adding that a man riding pillion sustained injuries and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Jaipur. The CBI case in the Supreme Court saw a sharp exchange of words on Tuesday between the two lawyers representing CBI Director Alok Kumar Verma, with the senior counsel questioning the move by his junior advocate in mentioning the matter on Monday without his consent. Senior advocate Fali S Nariman, appearing for Verma, told a bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi that he was not aware that lawyer Gopal Shankaranarayanan, who is also representing the CBI Director, had mentioned the matter on Monday before the court seeking some more time to file a reply on his behalf without his consent. A woman from Uttar Pradesh was rescued by the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) after a complaint was filed by a man, hailing from Dholpur, Rajasthan, alleging illegal confinement and torture of his fiancee by her parents.In his complaint, he said that he was engaged to the girl during a ceremony held four years ago. A 21-year-old man was arrested for allegedly supplying illegal liquor in rented vehicles from southwest Delhi, police said Tuesday. The accused was identified as Ankit, a resident of Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh, they said. On Sunday at around 1.30 pm, police stopped a car, with Haryana registration number, at Benito Marg and the driver was arrested, a senior officer said. Sixty cartons containing 3,000 quarters of illicit liquor was recovered from his possession, police said. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that he used to supply illicit liquor from Haryana to Delhi and Ghaziabad. He used to transport liquor during peak traffic hours, police said.

A sessions court on Tuesday framed charges against Patidar leader Hardik Patel and his two aides in a sedition case filed against them in connection with the violence that had broken out during the community's quota agitation in August 2015, paving the way for their trial. Sessions judge D P Mahida framed charges under IPC sections 124 (A) (sedition), 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) and others against Hardik, Dinesh Bambhaniya and Chirag Patel, who were out on bail, in the sedition case filed by Ahmedabad crime branch, nearly three years after the police filed a charge sheet against them. With this, the trial against the trio is likely to begin from January 29, the next date of hearing. If convicted, the maximum sentence is life imprisonment for these offences. A 25-year-old man was stabbed to death allegedly by brother duo following a quarrel at a wedding function in south Delhi's Tigri area, police said Tuesday. The man, identified as Ajay, and the two accused brothers -- Rahul and Deepak -- were attending a wedding function of a relative in Lado Sarai when a quarrel ensued between them on Monday night, Vijay Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) said. However, the matter was resolved after a few friends and elders intervened. But, the quarrel took place again after the function, he said. Later, when the father of the accused brothers approached Ajay's family to discuss the matter, Ajay allegedly abused him, the DCP said. Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit approved the premature release of three AIADMK men convicted in the killing of three woman students in 2000 after being satisfied that they will be "absorbed" by the society without any disturbance, the Raj Bhavan said Tuesday. The decision was also taken based on grounds that the Supreme Court had observed that the deaths took place in a state of mob frenzy and considering that the convicts had been in prison for 13 years, it said in a release here. Orders were issued approving the premature release after "being satisfied that the three life convicts will be absorbed by the local society without any disturbance..." and based on the apex court's observation," it said. The governor initially returned the files related to the three convicts for reconsideration, but the state government on October 25 last sent back them sticking to its recommendation that they be released. A sessions court here Tuesday sentenced seven persons to death for killing a man nearly nine years ago at Harsoli in the district after a clash between two groups of people over an old dispute. District and Sessions Judge Rajesh Bhardwaj sentenced the seven after convicting them on charges of murder, attempt to murder and rioting, armed with deadly weapons. According to the prosecution, in the fight that took place between two groups of people of the same community, one Naseem was killed and several others were injured in February 2010 after which the police had registered a case under various penal offences. The seven accused, who were given death sentence, are Sadiq, Shahid, Arshad, Rashid, Sarfaraz, Farukh and Mumtaz. They all have been in jail since their arrests soon after the clash. A death sentence given by a trial court has to be confirmed by the high court of the state.

The driver of a speeding car was charred to death as his vehicle hit a parapet on the edge of a road from Chandigarh to Dehradun in the district and burst into flames, a police official said Tuesday. Sirmaur's Additional Superintendent of Police Virender Singh Thakur said the accident took place at Judda Ka Johar around four kms from district headquarters Nahan. The ASP said the car was found fully gutted with the driver trapped inside, charred beyond recognition. The victim is yet to be identified, he said, adding his remains have been sent to the Dr Y S Parmar Medical College in Nahan for autopsy. The car bore the registration number of Kharad in Punjab and, accordingly, the Kharad police have been contacted, he said, adding a case has been registered in this regard.

A man, wanted in a case of rash driving, was apprehended on Tuesday after evading arrest for the last 15 years in Samba district, police said. The accused, Daljeet Singh, a resident of Bhour Camp Satwari area in Jammu district, was arrested and produced before a court, a police official said. He was booked in a case lodged in 2003 under Sections 304 (causing death by negligence), 337/338(causing hurt/endangering life) and 279 (rash driving) of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) at the Bari Brahmana police station, he said. Bika had been on the run since then, the official said. The arrest warrant issued against him got executed and the accused was sent to the sub-jail Hiranagar, he added.
