She had kept her face covered with a shawl and sari. Verma, along with her husband Chandrashekhar Verma, was named in the Arms Act case lodged with the Cheria Bariyarpur police station August this year. A court here on Tuesday awarded life sentence to a man for killing his wife over dowry in 2015 in Bihar's Banka district. Additional District and Sessions Judge (II) Ram Lal Sharma held Sanjay Yadav guilty under Section 304B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) (dowry death) and the Dowry Prohibition Act. Yadav had attacked his wife Gudia Devi with an axe on May 4, 2015 following which she died in a hospital later. The father of the deceased had alleged that Yadav demanded a motorcycle from them.
Sri Lankan police on Tuesday reversed its decision to remove a top detective investigating alleged crimes by the family and associates of disputed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa following pressure from the civil society. A four-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a juvenile at his house in northwest Delhi, police said Tuesday. The incident took place in Rohini on Sunday afternoon. After completing her household work post-lunch, the victim's mother was taking a nap in her home on the third floor of a building. The accused, who studies in Class IX, took the minor to his home on the second floor and allegedly raped her, a senior police officer said. When the girl returned home, her mother found her bleeding from her private parts. The girl narrated the incident to her mother, following which she questioned the minor and scolded him, the officer said. Fearing the consequences, the juvenile fled from the spot. He was apprehended from his locality on Monday, he said, he said. The Supreme Court Tuesday adjourned the hearing on CBI Director Alok Verma's plea challenging the government's decision to divest him of his duties, expressing anguish over the alleged leak of his response to a CVC report. The court, while adjourning the hearing to November 29, also expressed displeasure over publication of graft allegations by CBI DIG M K Sinha against senior officers. The top court adjourned the matter twice, soon after the hearing began and again later in the day. Headless body of a 19-year-old employee of a Mumbai-based hotel was found dumped in a nullah in Nallasopara in Maharashtra's Palghar district, the police said Tuesday. Police said the victim has been identified as Vikas Bhavdhane. A Tulinj police official said the head of the victim was found wrapped in a plastic and the body in a nullah Monday. A Hurriyat activist, named Hafizullah Mir, was shot at by terrorists in Achabal area of South Kashmir on Tuesday.Terrorists barged inside Mir's residence and fired indiscriminately. A new Delhi High Court judge was sworn in Tuesday, taking the working strength of the court to 39. Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri was administered oath by Delhi High Court Chief Justice Rajendra Menon. The Delhi High Court has an approved strength of 60, but was facing a shortage of 22 judges before this appointment was made. Justice Ohri, who was a practicing advocate, was appointed by the president on November 17 after his name was approved by the government. As per the new roster, Justice Ohri will sit with Justice Hima Kohli. When the bench sat for hearing matters, Justice Ohri's famiy members were also present in the courtroom. His name was recommended by the Supreme Court collegium on September 4 this year, along with the names of then advocates Jyoti Singh, Prateek Jalan, Anup Jairam Bhambhani and Sanjeev Narula for appointment as judges of the Delhi High Court. A 70-year-old pilgrim from Maharashtra died after falling unconscious in Katra, the base camp of the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Pradeep Ashok Shah, a resident of Sholapur, who had reached Katra to pay obeisance at the famous shrine along with family, fell unconscious while travelling in a three wheeler Monday evening, they said He was immediately rushed to a nearby community health centre, where doctors declared him brought dead, police officials said. His body would be handed over to family members after completion of legal formalities, the official said.
The Delhi High Court Tuesday granted bail to the in-laws of a flight attendant who allegedly committed suicide in July this year. Justice Mukta Gupta gave the relief to flight attendant Anissia Batra's parents-in-law R S Singhvi and Sushma Singhvi subject to their furnishing a bond of Rs 50,000. "Bail is allowed," the court said. Details of the order would be available once it is uploaded on the high court site. The Singhvis moved the high court after their plea for bail was rejected by the trial court. They surrendered before the police on November 1. Zafar Iqbal-Khan, 46, was sentenced in US District Court by Magistrate Judge John C Nivison to eight months in prison for failure to comply with the terms of release under supervision. According to court records, in 1999, Khan, a citizen of Pakistan, entered the US as a non-immigrant visitor. He was required to depart by February 2000, but never did.
