The Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau Monday raided the office of State Forest Corporation's divisional manager in Kishtwar district and seized various records for scrutiny, said officials. The ACB sleuths carried out the searches on a complaint alleging illegal allotment of the contract of compartment 34-A to a contractor at Dachhan in violation of norms, an ACB spokesperson said. He said it has been alleged that the contractor had not completed the work in time, yet one more contract was given to him of the same compartment which caused loss to the state exchequer. During the raid, the ACB team seized relevant records like detailed project reports, account statements regarding payment to the contractors and other documents, the spokesperson added. "Further action will be taken after scrutiny of seized records," he added.
A man accused of peddling drugs, who got bail a fortnight ago, was Monday picked up for allegedly being the mastermind of a jailbreak in Madhya Pradesh's Neemuch district in which four prisoners managed to flee, police said. Four prisoners - Nar Singh (20), Pankaj Mongia (21), Lekh Ram (29) and Dubey Lal (19) on Sunday cut the iron rod of their barrack at the sub-jail in Kanavati here and escaped after throwing a rope across a 22-foot high boundary wall, officials said. "We have detained Vinod Dangi (27), a local drug peddler after getting clues that he masterminded the jail break," Superintendent of Police Rakesh Sagar told PTI, adding that Dangi was imprisoned in Kanavati sub-jail for over three months on the charge of poppy husk peddling, and had got bail on June 11. The Delhi High Court has upheld the dismissal of two policemen, who allowed Vikas Yadav, who was sent to jail for 25 years for the murder of Nitish Katara, to leave his hospital room in AIIMS without parole on the night of Diwali in 2011, when he was facing trial in the case. A bench of justices Vipin Sanghi and Rajnish Bhatnagar rejected the policemen's appeals against the decision of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), which had agreed with the disciplinary action taken against them. "The disciplinary and the appellate authorities have said enough and the gravity of the misconduct established against the petitioners is enough to justify the punishment imposed upon them," the high court said, while dismissing the appeals of Constable Ramesh Kumar and Head Constable Ishwar Singh. The Supreme Court Monday refused to entertain a plea challenging a Bombay High Court order which dismissed a petition against 16 per cent quota for Marathas in admission to postgraduate medical and dental courses. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and B R Gavai said the admission process ended on June 17 and it cannot pass any order on the plea. "We are not inclined to interfere with the impugned order passed by the High Court as the admission process for the academic year 2019-20 has concluded on 17th June, 2019. The special leave petition is, accordingly, dismissed," the bench said. Special court judge P B Jadhav rejected the bail applications of Hema Ahuja, Bhakti Meher and Ankita Khandelwal, who are in jail since their arrest on May 29. After the judge pronounced the order, the three accused broke down and started sobbing in the court. The court rejected the contention of the convict that water samples were not lifted from his unit and it was not a water discharging unit. A Delhi court Monday deferred the hearing on a defamation complaint filed by BJP leader Vijender Gupta against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia for allegedly "maligning" his image by accusing him of attempting to kill the AAP chief. A 52-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping his daughter-in-law in Mouda village in Maharashtra's Nagpur district, police said Monday. Police said the woman, who was unwell, had gone with the accused on June 14 for treatment, and on the way back was raped by the latter at a farmhouse, an official said. A 24-year-old man, who was allegedly beaten for hours on suspicion of stealing a motorcycle and is seen in a purported video being forced to chant "Jai Shri Ram" and "Jai Hanuman", died four days later, police said on Monday. A Special Investigation Team has been set up to look into the death of Tabrez Ansari, who was declared brought dead to the Tata Main Hospital in Jamshedpur on June 22, Saturday, police said. The recently married Ansari was rushed to the Saraikela Sadar (district) Hospital after he complained of uneasiness on June 21, three days after he was tied to a pole and beaten with sticks through the night of June 18.
