An alleged bovine smuggler was detained Monday under Public Safety Act (PSA) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, a senior police officer said. Mohammad Amin, a resident of Badhoon village, has been booked and detained under PSA on the orders of district magistrate, senior superintendent of police, Rajouri, Yougal Manhas said. "Amin was found involved in bovine smuggling and thus threatening the peaceful atmosphere forcing authorities to detain him under the PSA," he said. The SSP said Amin was accused in four separate FIRs registered in Rajouri Police Station since last year. "A dossier for his detention was submitted to the district magistrate, who in turn issued the order which was implemented today," Manhas said. Prasad Shrikant Purohit, one of the accused in the 2008 Malegaon bast case, that he was being prosecuted for terror charges under the stringent UAPA without any valid sanction. The apex court had, on April 20 this year, granted Purohit the liberty to raise the issue of grant of sanction to prosecute him under the Unlawful Aactivities (Prevention) Act before the trial court at the time of framing of charges. However, the trial court had rejected Purohit's plea on sanction and had framed charges against him. The Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court Monday quashed an FIR filed on a complaint by BJP leader and former minister Eknath Khadse against anti-corruption activist Anjali Damania. A division bench of Justices T V Nalawade and V V Kankanwadi allowed a petition filed by Damania, seeking to quash the FIR registered against her on charges of criminal conspiracy and trespassing. Khadse had earlier this year filed two complaints at the Muktainagar police station in Maharashtra's Jalgaon district, alleging that Damania used fake documents to frame him under corruption charges. In the First Information Reports (FIRs), Khadse claimed that Damania had paid money to a woman to trespass into his house and office premises in Muktainagar and plant documents in a bid to frame him. The former minister had also alleged that Damania submitted false affidavits in a public interest litigation filed against him by her in the Bombay High Court in December 2016. The Delhi High Court on Monday granted four more weeks to the UIDAI to file its response on a plea raising concerns about Aadhaar data security and privacy of individuals, in the wake of reported leak of personal information of people from the Unique Identification Authority of India's (UIDAI) database. A bench of justices S Ravindra Bhat and Prateek Jalan listed the matter for further hearing on February 14 next year after giving more time to UIDAI to respond to the petition. The court had earlier issued notice and sought reply of the authorities on the plea which also urged the court to direct the Centre to either allow people to opt out of the system or delete the entire existing UIDAI data in view of alleged security breaches. A CRPF jawan Monday allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with the service rifle of a colleague in poll-bound Chhattisgarh's Raipur district, police said. Constable Rajiv Kumar Singh (37), belonging to the 148th battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force, shot himself with his colleague's AK-47 rifle at around 12:20 pm in the premises of Kabir Nagar police station, an official told PTI. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where authorities declared him dead on arrival, the official said. Singh, a native of Jamunipur village of Uttar Pradesh's Chandauli district, was on poll duty in the state where the second phase of voting will be held on Tuesday. A case has been registered and a probe was underway to find out the reason why Singh took this step, the official added.

The Supreme Court on Monday said that it would direct all the states to implement the draft witness protection scheme framed by the Centre in consultation with the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). Attorney General K K Venugopal told a bench of justices A K Sikri and S Abdul Nazeer that the draft scheme, which has now been finalised, would be made into a law "in due course", but till then the court should direct the states to start implementing it. "We will pass an order. We will give directions to all the states to start implementing it (scheme)," the bench told Venugopal. The issue of witness protection scheme had cropped up earlier when the top court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking protection for witnesses in rape cases involving self-styled preacher Asaram Bapu. A special NIA court here Monday directed that a copy of photographs and videos pertaining to the 2008 Malegoan blast be provided to Lt. Col. Prasad Shrikant Purohit, who is one of the accused in the case. Purohit, in an application filed last week, had asked the special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court to give him copies of photographs and videos related to the incident to prepare his defence. During the argument on Monday, the prosecution objected to his plea, saying no other accused had asked for these documents and that this was a delay tactic. However, special judge V S Padalkar directed the court registrar to provide a copy of the photographs and videos of the incident to Purohit. The matter was then adjourned till November 21. The photographs and videos are part of the charge sheets submitted by the prosecution in the case. A policeman was injured in an incident of firing at the official residence of the Director General of Police here though it's not yet clear whether he accidentally shot himself or was fired at, officials said Monday. "Constable Subash Chander from Noushera was injured in the firing incident at the DGP's official residence at Bikram Chowk here," a police officer told PTI. He said Chander was rushed to the GMC Hospital, where his condition is stated to be critical. "We cannot say whether it is a case of accidental fire or suicide. His rifle was lying close to him," the officer said. He said that DGP Dilbagh Singh had not shifted to his official residence as yet.
