Teen set ablaze for refusing to marry cousin

A 16-year-old girl was set ablaze in Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur district, allegedly by her cousin for refusing to marry him, police said Monday. The girl had gone out to attend nature's call on Sunday evening in Jarakhar village when the cousin met her and started putting pressure on her to flee and get married, said Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Santosh Kumar Singh. When she refused, the accused poured kerosene on the girl and set her ablaze. The girl has suffered 50-per-cent burns and undergoing treatment at a hospital, the ASP said. A case has been registered on the complaint of the girl's father and efforts are to nab the accused who is absconding, the officer added.

Malegaon blasts case: SC asks Bombay HC to hear Colonel Purohit's plea

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Bombay High Court to hear Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Shrikant Purohit's plea challenging the validity of the prosecution sanction for his trial under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) on November 21."We had always raised the issue that there is no valid sanction before the court had taken cognizance. So, that issue is pending before the High Court. Now, we had requested the High Court that till this issue is decided the trial court should defer framing charges," Neela Gokhale, counsel for Colonel Purohit, told ANI."But, the High Court had refused to grant such prayer. Against this, we had come to the Supreme Court. Now, the top court has requested the High Court to decide at the earliest issue regarding charges and sanction for prosecution of Colonel Purohit. So, in all probability and in reference of the order of the Supreme Court, the High Court will surely hear the issue of sanction raised by us in the appeal first before the trial ..

IRCTC scam: Lalu to appear before court via video conferencing on Dec 20, court directs CBI to make arrangements

Delhi's Patiala House Court on Monday adjourned the 2013 Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) alleged scam case and ordered former Bihar chief minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad to appear before it on December 20 via video conferencing.Lalu Prasad, who is currently serving jail term in fodder scam case, has been admitted to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi, under police custody for treatment of diabetes and other ailments.On October 6, the court had ordered Prasad to appear before it via video conferencing on November 19. However, the video conferencing could not take place since there was no such facility in the hospital. Two new judges take oath in Orissa High Court

Chief Justice K S Jhaveri of Orissa High Court on Monday administered the oath of office to two new judges of the High Court. With the inclusion of Justice Shatrughana Pujahari and Justice Akshaya Kumar Mishra, the number of judges in Orissa High Court went up to 14, including that of the chief justice. The Supreme Court Collegium earlier this month had recommended the repatriation of Justice Pujahari from Madras High Court to here. Hailing from Orissa High Court, Justice Pujahari was transferred to the Madras High Court in November last year. Similarly, the Apex Court Collegium last week had also recommended the appointment of Mishra to the Orissa High Court. Prior to his present appointment, Mishra, an OJS officer of 1988 batch, was serving as a Registrar of the high court.

Malegaon case: SC asks Bombay HC to deal with Purohit's plea

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Bombay High Court to deal with the plea of Lt. Col. Prasad Shrikant Purohit, one of the accused in the 2008 Malegaon bast case, that he was being prosecuted in the matter without any valid sanction. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi directed the high court that Purohit's plea be dealt with on November 21. A special court on November 2 had commenced the formal trial against Purohit, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and five other accused after framing of charges under various penal law in the Malegaon blast case. Purohit, in his plea, referred to the earlier apex court order by which the trial court and the Bombay High Court were directed to deal with the claim of Purohit that he was being prosecuted under penal laws including the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act without any sanction from the authorities. Inaugurating the Jharkhand Para Legal Volunteers Workshop here on Sunday, Joseph told the lawyers about their responsibility and called upon them to maintain the brotherhood concept of the Constitution. Joseph asked the lawyers to talk to the downtrodden and helpless people and provide them legal help. The Supreme court judge also handed over cheques ranging between Rs 50,000 and Rs 3 lakh as compensation to 25 victims under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and sexual abuses belonging to three districts - Dhanbad, Giridih and Dumka. According to Station House Officer Kushal Pal Singh, the injured was rushed to a hospital. Mexican drug lord Hector Beltran Leyva dies of heart attack

Mexican drug boss Hector Manuel Beltran Leyva, once one of Mexico's most-wanted men, died Sunday after suffering a heart attack in jail. The Interior Ministry said that Beltran Leyva, 56, was transported to a hospital the central city of Toluca after complaining of chest pains but that doctors were unable to save him. Beltran Leyva received the necessary medical attention and prison and hospital personnel did everything in their capacity to revive him, the ministry said, emphasising that security protocols were observed. Beltran Leyva was arrested in 2014 in San Miguel de Allende, a colonial city favoured by US retirees, but had eluded an extradition request from the United States. 350 kg cannabis seized, 1 held in Meghalaya

Customs officers seized more than 350 kg cannabis and arrested one person for smuggling the contraband near here on Sunday, a customs department officer said. The value of the seized contraband is more than Rs 50 lakh in the international market, the officer said. Acting on a tip-off, officers of the customs department intercepted a Guwahati-bound truck at Diengpasoh area, on the outskirts of the city, and on searching the vehicle, 24 packets containing cannabis were recovered and seized, Customs Deputy Commissioner I R Kharkongor told PTI. The driver was arrested and charged with relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, Kharkongor said. The 24 packets containing cannabis were found concealed under empty plastic crates, he said. The contraband was being transported to Guwahati in Assam from Agartala in Tripura, he added.

UP STF busts gang providing solvers for govt exam, six arrested

With the arrest of six persons from Moradbad district, the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force Sunday claimed to have busted a gang which provided solvers for a government teacher recruitment exam. The accused were identified as Sachin, Jitendra Kumar Saini, Vipin Kumar, Saurabh Asthana, Mithilesh and Sippu alias Sirdaari, a spokesperson of the STF said in a statement. The accused were arrested from VPS Public School in Moradabad, the spokesperson said. The gang provided solvers to candidates appearing for the Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test. The gang used to charge Rs 10 lakh from each of the candidates, the STF statement said, adding that the solvers were paid Rs 50,000. Six mobile phones, a driving license, three admit cards, two OMR sheets, two answer sheets, a four wheeler and cash worth Rs 24,250 were seized from the accused, it said.
