CB-CID to handle cases of protesters against Salem-Chennai highway project

The Madras High Court Friday transferred to the Crime Branch-CID the cases involving those taken into preventive custody for protesting against the Salem-Chennai green corridor highway project. A division bench, comprising Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Bhavani Subbaroyan, passed interim orders on a petition from advocate Rathnam seeking direction for fair and just compensation for the victims of "violations" committed by police besides a probe into the alleged violation of rights of farmers against the project. The bench said, "In the case on hand, emotions are high among the people. There is apprehension of forceful dispossession of property among land owners." "Therefore, a detailed and unbiased probe is required," the court said, adding that an inquiry by police would not be "efficacious and effective since the police of two districts are involved." BrahMos Aerospace engineer's bail plea rejected

District judge N K Jauhri on Friday rejected the bail plea of Nishant Agrawal, a senior system engineer of BrahMos Aerospace in Nagpur, arrested for allegedly providing technical information to Pakistani intelligence agency ISI. Turning down his plea, the court said that it is a serious matter relating to the safety and security of the country and since investigation in the case is still going on, he is not entitled to bail as of now. It was pleaded on behalf of the accused that he was innocent and he was being falsely implicated due to a conspiracy. Opposing the bail plea, public prosecutor Manoj Tripathi argued that important evidence has been collected from his laptop with regard to the charges. Fourth arrest made in Delhi teacher's murder case

The police on Friday arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the murder of a 38-year-old school teacher in northwest Delhi's Bawana area, officials said. Four persons have been arrested in the case so far, the police said. Manjeet (38), husband of the deceased, his girlfriend Angel Gupta alias Shashi Prabha (26) and Rajeev (40), were arrested on Thursday. The fourth accused, identified as Deepak, was Rajeev's driver for the past 10 years, the police said. Manjeet was in a relationship with Angel and his wife, Sunita, objected to it, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta said. During investigation, Sunita's relatives handed over her diary to police in which she had written that her married life was unsatisfactory. Manjeet's in-laws had also learnt of his illicit relationship, following which he promised to end it, Gupta said. J'khand HC quashes CBI court's summons against 2 accused in fodder scam

The Jharkhand High Court Friday quashed the summons issued by a special CBI court in a fodder scam case against a serving IAS officer and a former IPS officer. The court of Justice Apresh Kumar Singh said it was not justified to take cognizance in the matter without the approval of the prosecution as it quashed the summons against IAS officer Sukhdev Singh and former Bihar DGP D P Ojha. Alongside, there is no evidence that the court could use section 319 of the CrPC against them, the bench observed. Earlier, during hearing, Singh's advocate Rahul Kumar had said that his client was deputy commissioner of Deoghar between June 22, 1993 and August 1994 while the fodder scam took place between 1991 and 1993. Delhi: 2 arrested for shooting dance instructor

Body of minor kidnapped on Oct 29 found in Maha's Bhiwandi

The body of a minor who had been kidnapped on October 29 was found Friday in Bhiwandi in Maharashtra's Thane district, police said. The body of Mohammad Bilal Mohammad Shakil Qureshi (15), son of a meat shop owner, was found in a highly decomposed state in Ovli Khind area of Bhiwandi's Narpoli locality, Inspector S A Bhagwan of Bhoiwada police station said. He said that the body bore injury marks and has been sent for post mortem. Bhagwan said that one Vahid Ansari (20) has been arrested in connection with the crime and two more people are wanted in the case. Man arrested for cheating people by impersonating Army man

A 29-year-old man was arrested from the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) for allegedly cheating people by impersonating an Army man, police said Friday. The accused, who is an MA student, has been identified as Mohammad Rakib, from Rajasthan, they said. On October 7, one Akash Pal, a resident of Pitampura, filed a police complaint alleging that some unidentified persons, impersonating Army personnel, contacted him through OLX offering an 'Apple I-Phone 7 plus' at cheap price and called him at T-1 of the IGI Airport to get the delivery of the phone, Sanjay Bhatia, Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI Airport) said. 3 arrested for robbing AIIMS nurse of jewellery, cash

Their passion for bodybuilding, drug addiction and greed for easy money prompted three men to allegedly rob a nurse of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in west Delhi's Rajouri Garden, police said Friday. The trio, Tarun (21), Mukesh Kumar (23) and Manish Nishad (23) -- all residents of Subhash Nagar -- have been arrested, they said. J'khand HC rejects former MP's bail petition in fodder scam

The Jharkhand High Court on Friday rejected the bail petition of former MP R K Rana, who is serving prison term after being convicted in a fodder scam case pertaining to fraudulent withdrawal of money from Chaibasa treasury in the 1990s. The bench of Apresh Kumar Singh rejected the bail petition moved by Rana after being convicted by a special CBI court in the fodder case. In his bail petition, Rana contended that he had got bail in another fodder case also pertaining to Chaibasa treasury and that charges and witnesses are the same. Therefore, bail be granted in this matter too, the petition said. The CBI opposed the bail petition.

U'khand HC stays arrest of two news channel employees in string operation conspiracy

The Uttarakhand High Court Friday granted a stay on the arrest of Saurabh Sahani and Praveen Sahani in connection with a conspiracy to carry out sting operations of senior politicians and bureaucrats of the state to blackmail them. A private news channel head Umesh Kumar accused of pressurising a subordinate to do a sting on the chief minister and the additional chief secretary has been already arrested in connection with the case. The order putting a stay on the arrest of Saurabh Sahani and Pravin Sahani was given by Justice Lokpal Singh who also asked the two to cooperate with the investigation. The order came on a petition seeking quashing of an FIR accusing Kumar, Saurabh Sahani, Praveen Sahani and two others of being involved in a conspiracy to carry out the stings of prominent politicians and bureaucrats in Uttarakhand to blackmail them.

Man arrested for storing 625 kg of firecrackers without licence in west Delhi

A man was arrested for allegedly storing 625 kilograms of firecrackers without license in west Delhi's Tilak Nagar, police said Friday. The accused, identified as Vashinder Singh, was arrested, they said. BoM reinstates Marathe, Gupta as MD and ED of bank

In a significant development, Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) Friday restored powers of R P Marathe and R K Gupta as managing director and executive director of the bank with immediate effect. They were divested of their responsibilities in June this year following their arrest by the Economic Offence wing of the Pune Police in an alleged cheating case. According to sources, they were reinstated as Pune Police decided to take back all charges and withdraw cases against them. The Board of Directors of Bank in its meeting held on November 2 has "decided to restore/reinstate the functional responsibilities of R P Marathe, Managing Director and CEO and R K Gupta, Executive Director of Bank with immediate effect," the bank said in a filing to stock exchanges. A Pune court on Friday turned down the bail application of Nagpur University professor Shoma Sen who was among the five activists arrested in June this year for alleged Maoist links. The court, last week, had refused bail to activists Sudha Bharadwaj, Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira, arrested in the same case. District and Sessions Judge Kishor D Vadane rejected Sen's bail plea on Friday. Companies law amended; case load of special courts expected to reduce 60%: Govt

The government on Friday amended various provisions of the companies law through an ordinance, a move that is expected to reduce pendency of cases before special courts by 60 per cent besides bringing down applicable penalties for small companies. The ordinance amending the Companies Act, 2013, has been promulgated with twin objectives of "promotion of ease of doing business along with better corporate compliance", an official release said. President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent for the ordinance on Friday after the Union Cabinet cleared the proposal for promulgating it on Thursday. The amendments have been made on the basis of recommendations made by a government-appointed panel that reviewed the offences under the Act. With the latest amendments, jurisdiction of 16 types of corporate offences would be shifted from the special courts to in-house adjudication. BoM restores functional responsibilities of Marathe, Gupta

The Bank of Maharashtra on Friday restored "functional responsibilities" of its Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer Ravindra Marathe and Executive Director R K Gupta. On October 21, Pune police had told a court here that it did not find sufficient evidence against Marathe and other top officials of the nationalised bank, arrested in connection with a cheating case registered against city-based developer D S Kulkarni. Gang involved in making bogus BEST bus passes busted; 5 held

Police busted a gang involved in preparing bogus bus passes of civic-run transport undertaking BEST with the arrest five people Friday, an official said. The gang had made at least 400 bogus BEST bus passes, causing loss to the transport undertaking, he said. Four of the gang members were arrested from Chembur in eastern suburbs, while the fifth one was held from Wadala bus depot, the official said. Among them, one person is an employee of Trimax Company which has a contract of preparing BEST's monthly travel passes, he said. The police recovered 37 bogus travel passes from the private company employee, the main accused who was arrested from Wadala bus depot, he said. Cap royalty payments, technology transfer fees by domestic firms: SJM to govt

The RSS-affiliated Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) Friday urged the government to put a cap on royalty payments and technology transfer fees, asserting that this move will help in keeping the current account deficit under check. The organisation has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding a cap on royalties paid by domestic companies to their foreign parent firms. "It is the considered opinion of SJM that the cap on royalty as it existed prior to 2009 was a prudent policy as it helped in keeping outflow of foreign exchange, and therefore keeping the current account deficit in balance of payments, low," its co-convener Ashwani Mahajan said in the letter. Royalty payment outflows are payments made by domestic companies to their foreign parent firms or by Indian citizens to foreign entities for use of property, patent, copyrighted work, licence or franchise. Rajasthan Police inspector arrested for taking Rs 10,00 bribe

An inspector of the Rajasthan Police was Thursday arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a liquor contractor, an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) official said. Ram Kishore Chaudhary, posted as the SHO at Salempur police station in Dausa district, had demanded the money from Hakim Singh, he said. A trap was laid and he was caught accepting Rs 10,000, ASP Narrotam Verma said. A case was registered against Chaudhary under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
