A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment by a special POCSO court here for kidnapping and raping a minor tribal girl in Maharashtra's Palghar district. Special POCSO and district judge P P Jadhav also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on Aashif Akbar Kotwal, a driver, on Thursday. Additional Public Prosecutor Vivek Kadu said Kotwal had ferried the 16-year-old victim's family in his vehicle to a marriage function in Bhevardachapada in Jawhar tehsil on May 30, 2015. After the family returned from the function and got off at Apatale village, Kotwal forcibly drove off with the victim and raped her at an isolated spot in Kalsheti village, he said. Kotwal was later nabbed by the victim's family the next morning and handed over to the police, Kadu said. A case under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code was registered in this connection.
: Two youth have been arrested for allegedly misbehaving with a girl in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh while search is on for another in connection with the incident, police said here Friday. The arrest was made on Thursday night. The three on a motorcycle intercepted the girl on the way home from a coaching centre on the night of October 30 and tried to sexually assault her, the victim said in a complaint to the police. Upon seeing motorists approaching, the youth sped away on their vehicle, the complainant said. Based on the registration number of the bike given by the victim, the police traced two of the youth and are searching for the other.
The Centre's clearing of names of four chief justices of high courts for elevation as Supreme Court judges within 48 hours of the recommendation has left Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi awe-struck. The apex court collegium, headed by the CJI and comprising its four-senior most judges, had on October 30 recommended to the Centre the names of the four judges for the elevation, and they took oath of office on Friday. The Supreme Court Friday said it would hear after eight weeks a plea which has alleged that the Centre has been "indefinitely sitting" on the names recommended by the apex court collegium for appointment of judges in the higher judiciary. The plea, stating that the government cannot "frustrate" the process of appointment of judges in the apex court and high courts in "an oblique way" by sitting on collegium's recommendations and not responding to names reiterated by it, came up for hearing before a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. Senior lawyer Dushyant Dave and advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for petitioner NGO Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL), told the bench that the Centre has been sitting on several names for appointment as judges in the higher judiciary. More than 20 vehicles can be examined for evidence daily once the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) gets a separate site here for the purpose, officials said Friday. FSL in Rohini is currently able to examine only three-four vehicles a day due to lack of space. Once the new site, which is being developed by the Public Works Department, opens, forensic examination of vehicles would be faster, they added. The site in Rohini Sector-21-23, spread over 4,000 square metre, would be commissioned by this year-end. "The laboratory will have multidisciplinary facilities. All required experts, including photo experts, will be available at the new site and it will ease pressure and help avoid unnecessary rush to crime scenes," said FSL Director Deepa Verma. Delhi saw 35,938 cases of vehicle theft this year till October 15. According to FSL officials, Delhi Police usually recovers stolen vehicles in bulk but due to space constraints, the laboratory now asks them to get only three-four vehicles at .
Two persons training for a police recruitment drive in Maharashtra's Parbhani district were Friday killed after being knocked down by a speeding car, an official said. The mishap occurred early hours Friday at Mategaon Shivar in Parbhani's Purna town, around 500 kilometres from here, when Santosh Sable (18) and Nathuram Sable (23) were practicing running, he said. The duo were hit by a speeding car and were declared dead on arrival by hospital authorities, he said, adding two others sustained minor injuries in the incident. The car driver, who fled from the scene, was nabbed later and placed under arrest, the police official said.

A panchayat head was Friday arrested in connection with religious conversion through allurement and pressure, the police said here. The Todai Panchayat Mukhia (head), Emmanuel Murmu, was arrested at Hiranpur in Pakur district, they said. The arrest came following an FIR by one Pramila Marandi of Todai Panchayat, accusing Murmu and two of his associates of exerting pressure and allurement to convert her to christianity, Police Inspector Virendra Pandey said. He said that the FIR was lodged under Jharkhand Freedom of Religion Act, 2017. The other two accused will be arrested soon, he said.

The National Investigative Agency (NIA) submitted nearly 216 documents before the Special NIA Court in Mumbai as the trial in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case commenced on Friday.Six people were killed and a dozen others were injured when a bomb placed on a motorcycle exploded in Maharashtra's Malegaon on September 29, 2008.Lieutenant Colonel Shrikant Purohit, Pragya Singh Thakur are among the seven accused facing trial in the case.The terror investigation agency also submitted a list of 286 witnesses. The Supreme Court Friday dismissed the CBI appeal against the Delhi High Court's 2005 verdict discharging all the accused, including the Hinduja brothers, in the politically-sensitive Rs 64 crore Bofors pay-off case. The apex court rejected the CBI plea seeking condonation of the 13 year delay in filing the appeal against the May 31, 2005 judgement of the high court saying it is not convinced with the grounds furnished by the agency. "We are not convinced with the grounds furnished by the petitioner for the inordinate delay of 4,522 days in filing the present Special Leave Petitions," said a bench, headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.
