HC quashes I-T order sanctioning criminal prosecution against Chidambaram's kin
The Madras High Court Friday quashed an order passed by the Income Tax department sanctioning criminal prosecution against the family members of former Union minister P Chidambaram in a black money case. When the petitions by Chidambaram's wife Nalini, his son Karti and daughter-in-law Srinidhi came up, a division bench of justices S Manikumar and Subramania Prasad said no case was made out and quashed the criminal prosecution. The writ petitions were filed challenging the criminal prosecution initiated by the I-T Department against them. On October 12, the high court had extended the interim order dispensing with the appearance of Chidambaram's family members before a special court here till Friday, in the case of 'non-disclosure' of foreign assets filed against them by the I-T Department. The issue pertains to alleged non-disclosure of overseas assets and bank accounts held by the three. According to the I-T Department, the three had failed to disclose a property they jointly own .

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed an appeal by the CBI challenging a 2005 Delhi High Court order quashing charges against UK-based Hinduja Brothers for alleged kickbacks in the purchase of 155 mm Howitzer Bofors guns.
SC dismisses CBI's appeal in Bofors case, says grounds of delay not justified
The Supreme Court Friday dismissed the CBI's appeal against the Delhi High Court's 2005 verdict discharging all the accused, including Hinduja brothers, in the politically-sensitive Rs 64 crore Bofors pay-off case. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi rejected the CBI plea seeking condonation of the 13 year delay in filing the appeal against the May 31, 2005 judgement of the high court. It said it was not convinced with the grounds of the CBI to condone over 4,500 days' delay in filing the appeal. The CBI had filed the appeal on February 2 this year. The apex court, however, said the CBI can raise all grounds in the appeal against the same high court verdict filed by advocate Ajay Agrawal who has also challenged the judgement. The top court has already admitted the petition filed by Agrawal who had contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election against then Congress president Sonia Gandhi from Rae Bareilly. SC quashes FIR against Anurag Thakur, Dhumal and others
The Supreme Court Friday quashed an FIR against BJP MP Anurag Thakur, former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and others in a case related to alleged irregularities in granting land on lease for construction of the Dharamshala cricket stadium. A bench of justices A K Sikri, Ashok Bhushan and Ajay Rastogi said, "We allow the appeal. The FIR registered is quashed." Thakur, Dhumal and Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) had challenged the Himachal Pradesh High Court order refusing to quash the FIR registered during the then Virbhadra Singh government in the state. The high court on April 25, 2014, had refused to quash the FIR and stay the criminal trial pending before special judge, Dharamshala, in a case registered for cheating and criminal conspiracy, and under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Himachal Pradesh to ramp up forensic labs with advanced DNA testing facilities
The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Himachal Pradesh is all set to make new DNA technology upgrades to its State and Range Forensic Science Laboratories (RFSLs) that will increase the number of cases being analysed.The FSL in Junga is the first in the country to initiate well-equipped DNA facilities in all its labs across the state. The aim here is to accelerate the DNA profiling process that will lead to quicker investigation and trial, thus fast-tracking the criminal justice system.According to a data shared by the Himachal Pradesh State FSL, sexual assault/rape makes up for 44 per cent of the total cases received for DNA profiling. An unfortunate number of 900 cases are still pending for DNA analysis and 14 per cent of this number are samples from victims of sexual assault. Bawana killing: Deceased's husband, his model girlfriend nabbed
Three days after a 38-year-old teacher in Bawana area of the national capital was shot at in broad daylight, the Delhi Police have arrested three accused, including the husband of the deceased.Following an investigation in the case, Delhi Police on Thursday arrested 38-year-old Manjeet, husband of the deceased and a resident of Bawana village who is accused of hatching the murder plot of his wife.As per initial investigation by the police, the deceased's husband was in an extramarital relationship with a model. Supreme Court gets 4 new judges
Justices Hemant Gupta, R Subhash Reddy, M R Shah and Ajay Rastogi were Friday sworn in as judges of the Supreme Court, taking its strength to 28. The swearing-in ceremony started at 10:30 am in court number 1 of the apex court and Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi administered oath of office to the four judges. The president had Thursday given his assent to the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium for elevating Gupta, Reddy, Shah and Rastogi, who were chief justices of different high courts, as apex court judges. While Justice Gupta was the chief justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, Justice Reddy was the Gujarat High Court's chief justice. Justice Shah was the chief justice of the Patna High Court and Justice Rastogi was the chief justice of the Tripura High Court. The apex court has a sanctioned strength of 31. With the elevation of these four new judges, the strength has risen from 24 to 28.

A Malaysian financier at the centre of a corruption scandal surrounding state fund 1MDB maintained his innocence Friday after the US unveiled criminal charges against him and two ex-Goldman Sachs bankers. Low Taek Jho, commonly known as Jho Low, and the former bankers were accused by the US Justice Department of conspiring to launder billions of dollars from the fund and bribing officials in Malaysia and Abu Dhabi. Low allegedly played a central role in plundering 1MDB. He was an associate of Malaysia's former leader Najib Razak, whose government lost power in May in large part due to allegations that the then premier was involved in the vast fraud. Prayagraj: Allahabad University student leader shot dead
A student leader of the Allahabad University, named Sumit Shukla, was shot dead at a party in the varsity hostel on Thursday.Shukla reportedly had a reward of Rs 25000 on his head and had a number of cases registered against him."The main accused, who killed Shukla, is a student leader of the CMP Degree College. Delhi: Traffic Police officials rescue newborn baby girl
Three Delhi Traffic Police officials on Thursday rescued a newborn girl child from the area near RK Khanna Tennis Stadium here.The baby was immediately rushed to the Safdarjung Hospital.On Wednesday, Head Constable Anil, Constable Amar Singh and Constable Parveen were regulating traffic and prosecuting traffic violations near R.K. Khanna Tennis Stadium. At about 4:00 pm they heard wailing of a baby from the bushes. They also noticed that some stray dogs were also roaming around that location.Immediately Delhi Police Control Room was informed and the infant was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital for immediate medical attention. The baby is doing fine now. In this regard, a case under Section 317 of the Indian Penal Code was registered at the Safdarjung Police Station.
Odisha bans polythene in 6 cities
Following a month-long deadline of an awareness campaign against the use of polythene and plastic bags, the Odisha government has banned the use of polythene in six major cities of the state.As per the directives, all plastic items less than 50 micromax thickness will be banned in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Sambalpur, Rourkela and Puri, read a statement."The state government will strictly enforce the ban in six cities. For the same, the direction has been given to the local authorities and they have been asked to ensure the implementation," said Environment Director-cum-Special Secretary, K Murugesan.As per the directives, households will have to pay a penalty of Rs 200, 500 and 1000 for the first three instances of violation or criminal proceeding can be initiated.Similarly, shop owners will be fined Rs 500, 1000 and 2000 and restaurant owners will have to pay Rs 1000, 2000 and 5000, for first three instances of violation following which criminal proceeding and cancellation of .
