Khashoggi was strangled and dismembered, Turkey says

Journalist Jamal Khashoggi was strangled as soon as he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and his body was dismembered and destroyed as part of a premeditated plan, Turkey's chief prosecutor said Wednesday, making details of the murder public for the first time. The revelations came only an hour after Saudi Arabia's chief prosecutor left Istanbul, and his Turkish counterpart said he was "obliged" to release the information after their talks produced "no concrete results". Gruesome reports in the Turkish media had previously alleged that Khashoggi, a 59-year-old Washington Post contributor who had criticised the powerful Saudi crown prince, was killed and cut into pieces by a team sent from Riyadh to silence him. 4 overground workers of NDFB (Songbijit) nabbed in Assam

The Army has apprehended four overground workers of the separatist outfit NDFB (Songbijit) in Baksa and Chirang districts of Assam for alleged possession and supply of arms and ammunition, a defence spokesman said. Troops of Red Horns Division and Baksa district police personnel carried out a two-day long operation from Tuesday to track down the suspects, the spokesman said. At a mobile check-post, three people travelling in a vehicle were apprehended on Tuesday. A .303 rifle, nine live rounds and four mobile phones were seized from them, he said. Following their interrogation, their accomplice was arrested in Chirang district. An AK-56 assault rifle and a US-made M2 carbine were seized from him.

Police register 6 criminal cases in connection with ongoing DTC workers' strike

The Delhi Police Wednesday said it registered six criminal cases at various police stations here based on complaints received in connection with the ongoing strike by contractual workers of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). Hours after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot questioned Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and the Delhi Police over the action taken against the striking workers after imposition of The Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA), police said they have acted swiftly on the complaints received. Officials said they registered six cases in total under the Haryana Essential Services Maintenance Act and the IPC. "Immediate action is being taken as and when any complaint pertaining to DTC strike is received," police said in a statement. Man arrested in Ghaziabad for killing 8-year-old boy

A 22-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing an eight-year-old boy by smothering, police said here Wednesday. The accused, identified as Pappu Kumar, was arrested Tuesday based on a tip-off, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vaibhav Krishna said. The minor boy had gone missing on October 26 following which his father had lodged an FIR at the Kavi Nagar police station here, he said. The body of the missing boy was found in a forested area of Bamheta village two days later, the SSP said, adding that police had been searching for the accused since then. Court issues arrest warrant against Manju Verma

A court here on Wednesday issued arrest warrant against former Bihar minister Manju Verma, who has been booked in an Arms Act case following the recovery of a huge cache of ammunition from her residence during a CBI raid in connection with the Muzaffarpur shelter home sex scandal. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Prabhat Trivedi issued the warrant against Verma, who stepped down as the social welfare minister in August following reports suggesting "close links" between her husband Chandrashekhar Verma and the prime accused in the shelter home scandal, Brajesh Thakur. Foreign investor settles case with Sebi, pays Rs 8 lakh

The Marathon - London Global Investment Trust I Wednesday settled a case related to alleged violation of foreign investors norms with markets regulator Sebi after paying over Rs 8 lakh towards settlement. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) had initiated adjudication proceedings against The Marathon - London Global Investment Trust I for alleged violation of erstwhile foreign institutional investors (FII) regulations, according to a Sebi order. The investor had submitted an application for settlement of the adjudication proceedings initiated against it. Punjab Police bags CCTNS award

The Punjab Police Wednesday bagged the Union Home Ministry's Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) award for the development of the Digital Criminal Intelligence Gazette and the generation of the State Crime Record Bureau (SCRB) reports. CCTNS was launched in the state earlier this year to keep digitised records of FIRs and information on crimes and criminals. Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba, Director Intelligence Bureau Rajiv Jain, Director National Crime Records Bureau Ish Kumar and Joint Secretary in the Home Ministry Punya Srivastava conferred the award to DGP IT&T, Punjab, V K Bhawra, according to an official release issued here. Opium racket busted in Giridih, 6 held

The anti-terror squad (ATS) of Jharkhand Police Wednesday arrested six persons, including three women, in Giridih and busted an opium racket. The ATS seized 14 kg opium, worth Rs 5 lakh, from their possession, sub-divisional police officer Niraj Kumar Singh told reporters. On receiving information that the alleged opium peddlers would reach the Parasnath railway station in the morning, the ATS and the police personnel laid a trap and arrested them, Singh said. A 32-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly killing her two minor daughters by throwing them into a water tank in Maharashtra's Beed district on October 29, the police said Wednesday. Police book 10 persons for 'hurling' casteist remarks against BJP Aurai MLA

The police said Wednesday they have registered a criminal case against 10 persons for allegedly hurling casteist remarks against sitting BJP MLA Dinanath Bhaskar from the Aurai assembly seat, reserved for the scheduled caste members. Aurai Circle Officer Ram Karan said the case was registered under various sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, besides those of the Indian Penal Code as the accused had also allegedly threatened the legislator to kill him. Citing the BJP MLA's complaint, the circle officer said, "Dinanath Bhaskar was getting his house and a BJP office built, for which he needed to dig the plot for laying the foundation." Hashimpura families recall the massacre, some say life term not punishment enough

The families of the 1987 Hashimpura massacre victims could not hold back tears on Wednesday after the Delhi High Court sentenced 16 ex-policemen to life imprisonment for killing 38 people from the Muslim community. Plea challenges Assembly resolution on sacrilege cases, HC notice to Punjab govt

Lawful procedure followed in registration of case against Asthana: CBI officer Gurm to HC

A CBI officer, transferred in the wake of the present crisis in the probe agency, Wednesday claimed in the Delhi High Court that "lawful procedure" was followed for registration of a graft case against Special Director Rakesh Asthana and others. CBI Additional Superintendent of Police S S Gurm said the FIR against Asthana and others were filed after taking the opinion of Additional Solicitor General (ASG) P S Narasimha.
