Pakistan's Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notices to deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz on an appeal filed by the country's top anti-graft agency challenging the suspension of their sentences in a corruption case. Chief Justice Saqib Nisar Tuesday constituted a three-member bench headed by him to hear the National Accountability Bureau's (NAB) plea challenging the September 19 Islamabad High Court (IHC) order suspending the jail sentences of Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law retired captain Mohammad Safdar in the Avenfield corruption case. Six persons were killed in a clash in a village in Gujarat's Kutch district Tuesday night following a long-standing feud between two families over the local panchayat elections, police said. Among those killed were the son and the father-in-law of woman sarpanch (village head) Shakinaben Bhulia, they said. A heated argument broke out between members of the two families, belonging to two different communities at Chhasra village over the sarpanch's election which had taken place two years ago, Kutch (West) Superintendent of Police M S Bharada said. It escalated as the two groups attacked each other using sharp weapons, killing six persons and injuring four, he said. The deceased included the sarpanch's son Abid (25) and her father-in-law Adam Bhulia (65). The others who were killed were identified as Mangal Ahir (27), Bharat Ahir (28), Bhargav Ahir (26) and Chetan Ahir (38), said an official of Mundra police station. Five high courts in the country got new chief justices on Wednesday, a Law Ministry notification said. The appointments were made in courts in Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Calcutta, Gauhati and Bombay. Justice Ramesh Rangnath, a judge of the Andhra Pradesh and Telengana High Court has been appointed chief justice of the Uttarakhand HC. Justice K M Joseph, who was heading the Nainital-based HC was elevated to the Supreme Court in August. Vijai Kumar Bist, a judge of the Uttarakhand HC, has been elevated as chief justice of the Sikkim HC. Debasis Kar Gupta, a judge of the Calcutta HC, has been elevated as chief justice in the same court. Justice Ajjikuttira Somaiah Bopanna, a judge of the Karnataka High Court has been sent to the Gauhati HC as chief justice. Justice Naresh Harishchandra Patil, a jude of the Bombay HC, has been elevated as its chief justice. With the fresh appointments, all the 24 high courts in the country have full-time chief justices.

The officer-in-charge of Kankartala police station in West Bengal's Birbhum district was removed on Wednesday in connection with the murder of a ruling Trinamool Congress leader of Khairasole, police said. Dipak Ghosh, the Khayrasole block president of the TMC, was shot at and critically by unidentified miscreants when he was travelling on a motorcycle along with a party worker near his home at Khairasole on Sunday. He had died the next day at a private hospital in Durgapur. Police said Parthasarathi Mukherjee, the OC of Kankartala police station was removed and replaced by Partho Ghosh. The dead TMC leader's wife Mithu Ghosh had lodged a complaint with the police on Tuesday in which she named 15 people, the police said. The Bombay High Court Wednesday junked a lower court's order, which had granted the police more time to file the chargesheet against lawyer Surendra Gadling and others, who were arrested in June for alleged Maoist links in the aftermath of violence at Bhima Koregaon near Pune. While the ruling can pave the way for Gadling and the other accused to seek bail, Justice Mridula Bhatkar stayed her own order from becoming effective till November 1 so that the government could file an appeal in the Supreme Court. In the ruling, Justice Bhatkar questioned how the police officers were allowed to make arguments independently before the Pune court, seeking additional time. The family of Father Kuriakose Kattuthara, found dead in a room on the premises of at Dasuya near here, Wednesday alleged that the senior Catholic priest was being consistently harassed at the behest of Bishop Franco Mulakkal who is facing allegations of raping a nun. In a complaint to the police, Kattuthara's brother Jose Kurian said his brother had often told him and other family members that he was being threatened by the bishop and his people. Father Kuriakose was a witness in the nun rape case and was found dead in a room at St Paul Convent School, Dasuya on October 22. In his complaint, Kurian also claimed his brother's salary was slashed and being released irregularly. The Khoda Police has arrested two alleged drug peddlers here and seized cocaine worth Rs 2 crore from their possession, officials said Wednesday. The arrested were identified as Shahnawaz Qurushi (27) and Waseem alias Sonu (28), both hailing from Delhi. As part of its special drive against wanted criminals, Khoda Police was checking suspected vehicles at Sunday Market near the embankment area here on Tuesday night, Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Krishna said. The police apprehended two persons based on suspicion. After going through their belongings, the police found 200 gram of a fine white powder, officials said. French police seized a six-week-old lion cub from an apartment in a Paris suburb, and arrested its owner, a source close to the investigation has said. The female cub was discovered in a child's bed in the apartment of neighbours of the 30-year-old suspect, who was found hiding in a closet, they said on Tuesday. The cub was in good health, and was handed over to wildlife officials. Police were alerted by videos circulating on social media, in which a man offers the cub for sale for about 10,000 euros (USD 11,470), said the source. It was not known where the lion came from. A Himachal Pradesh revenue official was arrested Wednesday for allegedly assaulting Shimla Municipal Corporation commissioner's personal assistant, police said. A 30-year-old man carrying a cash reward of Rs 25,000 was arrested after being on the run for seven years for his alleged involvement in a dacoity case at Mayapuri area, police said Wednesday. The accused has been identified as Ranjeet Kumar alias Ranjeet Yadav, a resident of Etah district in Uttar Pradesh. A 34-year-old man died after he was attacked by an elephant on the city outskirts Wednesday, forest department sources said. Suresh, a resident of Viraliyur was returning home around 2 AM on his two-wheeler, when a rogue elephant blocked his way and attacked him, they said. On hearing the cries, forest guards in the vicinity rushed to the spot and found Suresh lying in a pool of blood, they added. A Lahore High Court bench hearing treason case against former military dictator Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday was once again dissolved after the retirement of Chief Justice Yawar Ali, media report said. Justice Ali was heading the three-member bench that also included Justice Mazhar Akbar and Justice Tahira Safdar. General (retd) Musharraf, 75, who has been living in Dubai since March 2016, is facing the treason case for suspending the Constitution in 2007, a punishable offence for which he was indicted in 2014. A conviction for high treason carries the death penalty or life imprisonment. The former army chief left for Dubai for medical treatment and has not returned since, citing security and health reasons.
