Bogus faith healer gets 10-yr RI under anti-superstition law

A bogus faith healer has been awarded 10 years rigorous imprisonment by a court here in Maharashtra for forcing a couple to perform obscene acts in his presence on the pretext of helping the woman conceive. District Judge P P Jadhav convicted the accused, Yogesh Kupekar, Tuesday under the Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act 2013 and IPC sections 376 (sexual assault) and 354 (molestation). The court also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on him. According to the prosecution, the accused had forced the couple in 2016 to have intercourse in front of him "to remove defects from the woman's body" on the pretext of his "treatment" to help her bear a child. Later, the couple lodged a complaint with Thane Police, accusing him of raping and molesting the woman and extorting Rs 10,000 from them. Court reserves order on closure report in DDCA funds misappropriation case

A Delhi Court has reserved its order on whether to accept the closure report of the police in a case relating to alleged misappropriation of funds and forgery in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) by some of its office bearers. Metropolitan Magistrate Abhilash Malhotra has fixed the matter for pronouncing the order on October 30. While the FIR was lodged in November 2015, the Delhi Police filed a closure report in the court in 2016, saying it has found no evidence of misappropriation of funds in the DDCA. "There is no evidence on record to suggest any wrongful loss to DDCA by opening this account in Central Bank and also by transfer of the amount from the other bank accounts of DDCA into this account," the closure report said. Moradabad: 2 FIRs against ex-DM, 7 others

Two First Information Reports (FIRs) have been lodged against former Moradabad district magistrate Zuhair Bin Saghir and seven others under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.The cases have been registered in connection with the transfer of a piece of land without obtaining permission from concerned authorities and releasing government-acquired land in Moradabad.Saghir was the District Magistrate of Moradabad in 2016-17.Besides him, other accused in the FIRs are former additional district magistrate of Moradabad Arun Kumar Srivastava (now retired), tehsildar Sanjay Kumar, among others.

Six killed in clash after dispute over panchayat poll in Guj

Six people were killed in a clash in Gujarat's Kutch district following a dispute over village panchayat elections, police said Wednesday. An argument erupted between members of two communities late Tuesday night over the sarpanch's (village head) election held sometime ago in Chhasra village in which a woman had won, Kutch (West) Superintendent of Police M S Bharada said. "Some members of a community held a grudge against the other after facing defeat in the election.The argument over the issue escalated and people from both the sides attacked each other with sharp weapons," he said. Six people were killed on the spot in the clash. The deceased were identified as Magan Ahir (27), Bharat Ahir (28), Bhargav Ahir (26) and Chetan Ahir (38), all from the same family, Abid Sabbar Bhulia (25), son of the woman sarpanch, and Amad Abdul Bhulia (70), he said. Pakistan arrests 16 Indian fishermen

Sixteen Indian fishermen have been arrested by Pakistani authorities for allegedly straying into the country's territorial waters, a security official said Wednesday. They were arrested on Monday by personnel of the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) during an operation. A security official told PTI that three boats of the fishermen were also confiscated. A case has been registered against them at the Dock Police Station in Karachi. Pakistan and India regularly arrest each other's fishermen who inadvertently enter into their waters due to absence of any proper technology to confirm the coastline border between Pakistan and India near Sir Creek in the Arabian Sea. They languish in jails until they are set free on certain occasions.

CBI feud: Director, special director divested of all powers; Nageswar Rao given charge

CBI Director Alok Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana have been "divested of all powers" amid an ongoing spat between them, sources said, calling it the first such case in the history of the agency. As an interim measure, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given charge of the CBI to Joint Director M Nageswar Rao, an Odisha-cadre officer, with immediate effect, a government order said. "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved that during the period of the subsistence of the aforesaid interim measure...M Nageshwar (sic) Rao, IPS, presently working as Joint Director, CBI, shall look after duties and functions of Director, CBI, and shall take over duties and functions with immediate effect," it read. CBI reshuffles team probing case against Asthana

The CBI has overhauled the team probing allegations of corruption against its former Special Director Rakesh Asthana, bringing in completely new faces, officials said Wednesday. There have been changes from the investigation officer to supervisory levels, they said. M Nageswar Rao, a 1986-batch Odisha cadre IPS officer, who took over the duties and functions of CBI director late last night, appointed Satish Dagar as Superintendent of Police to probe the case, they said. Dagar has in the past probed cases against Dera Sachcha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim. His first supervisor will be DIG Tarun Gauba, who had probed Vyapam cases. At joint director-level, V Murugesan has been brought in. The Supreme Court had reposed faith in Murugesan in the coal scam probe, they said. SC to hear CBI Director Alok Verma's plea on October 26

The Supreme Court Wednesday agreed to hear on October 26 the plea of CBI Director Alok Verma challenging the Centre's decision to divest him of powers and send him on leave in view of the internal feud between him and Special Director Rakesh Asthana. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi took note of the submissions of lawyer Gopal Shankarnarayan, appearing for Verma, that his plea needed urgent hearing. The bench, which also comprised Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph, agreed to the submissions and said the petition would be heard on October 26. SC to hear on Oct 26 CBI director's plea challenging Centre's decision

The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear on October 26 the plea of CBI Director Alok Kumar Verma challenging the Centre's decision sending him on leave. A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph considered the submission of Verma that his plea against the Centre's decision to send him on leave required urgent hearing. The CBI chief has also challenged the decision to appoint Joint Director M Nageshwar Rao as head of the probe agency. The Centre had yesterday taken note of the internal feud in the CBI and passed an order sending the CBI chief and Special Director Rakesh Asthana on leave.

102-year-old charged with indecent assault in Australia

A 102-year-old man has been charged with aggravated indecent assault against a 92-year-old woman at an old people's home in Sydney, police said Wednesday. The unnamed man will appear in court next month, police said, after he was accused of assaulting the fellow resident at a care facility in the city's eastern suburbs. Police declined to give details of the alleged crime, but said the incident took place around lunchtime on Tuesday and was reported to police. Officers arrived on the scene, not far from Bondi Beach, and took the man into custody. If convicted, he could face up to seven years in jail. He was however granted bail pending a court appearance on November 20. A handful of centenarians have faced trial for crimes committed earlier in their lives, but being charged with a current offense over the age of 100 is rare.

Rape attempt on 7-yr-old Dalit girl

A youth allegedly tried to rape a seven-year-old Dalit girl here while she was returning from school, police said Wednesday. The incident took place in Purquazi town in the district Tuesday evening. The accused offered noodles to the girl who was returning home from school and took her to the nearby jungle where he allegedly tried to rape her.The girl was found unconscious, Circle Officer Mohd.
