A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped and then strangulated to death by her neighbour in outer Delhi's Narela, police said Monday. The incident took place on June 14. After offering 'frooti', the 28-year-old accused took the girl to a sewage plant at a park in Tikri Khurd where he strangulated the minor girl with bare hands after raping her. The accused was arrested on Sunday, police said. According to the police, the minor girl was reported missing on June 15. The next day, the body of the girl was found at an abandoned water sewage plant in Swarn Jayanti Vihar in outer Delhi's Narela. The Supreme Court on Monday declined to entertain a plea seeking review of the policy that requires private tour operators to provide Haj tour services at the government rates.A division bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai was hearing a petition filed by the Federation of Haj Private Tour Operators of India.Recently, the Central government had allowed 10,000 additional seats for pilgrims going through private operators.The federation had moved the court challenging the condition imposed on private tour operators, directing them to charge additional quota of 10,000 seats allotted to them at the applicable rates of the Haj Committee of India.Senior advocate Salman Khurshid and advocate Sulaiman Khan, who appeared on the behalf of the petitioner, contended that the move would "hurt their business."Earlier on June 18, the top court had issued a notice to the Centre on the plea filed by tour operators.The court had also directed the petitioners to make their representation before .

A policeman allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle at a training centre here, officials said Monday. Selection Grade Constable Arjun Dev, a resident of R S Pura, was on sentry duty at Police Training Centre, Sunjwan, in the outskirts of the city when he reportedly took his life around midnight, a police official said. Dev's colleagues rushed to his post after hearing a gunshot and found him dead with a bullet injury in the face, the official said. The motive behind Dev's "extreme step" was not known yet, he said. A man has been arrested in connection with the escape of four prisoners from a jail in Neemuch district of Madhya Pradesh, police said on Monday.A source in the police said that the arrested person is the main accused in the case.Four guards were suspended after four prisoners escaped Kanawati Sub Jail here in the wee hours of Sunday, cutting bars of the jail with the help of a saw and jumped the wall by using a rope."Four guards have been suspended in the case. NCP leader Jitendra Awhad Monday attacked the Maharashtra government over its resolution to accommodate 636 candidates from the waiting list of limited departmental police sub-inspector examination conducted by MPSC in 2016 and alleged a "Rs 100 crore scam" into it. Labelling the government resolution (GR), issued in April this year, as "illegal", Awhad accused the government of interfering into the Maharashtra Public Services Commission's (MPSC) affairs. Speaking to reporters in the state legislature premises here, Awhad said an advertisement was issued three years ago to recruit for 828 posts of police sub-inspectors. The MPSC then did not recommend recruitment of over 2,000 other aspirants who took the examination. A 24-year-old man, who was brutally beaten up here last week on suspicion of being a thief, has died, police said Monday. The incident took place on June 18 when Tabrez Ansari was returning along with his two friends from Jamshedpur, around 30 km from here, in neighbouring East Singhbhum district. Some villagers caught them and accused them of stealing a motorcycle at Dhatkidih village in Seraikela-Kharsawan district, police said. Though Ansari's friends managed to escape, he was tied to a pole and beaten up with sticks through the night, they said. He was then handed over to police by the villagers, Superintendent of Police Karthik S said. Police said on June 21, Ansari was rushed to the Saraikela Sadar (district) Hospital after he complained of uneasiness. Eight people were arrested and some cash and vehicles seized after police raided a gambling den in Maharashtra's Thane district, an official said Monday. Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided a garage at Sheetal Nagar locality in Mira Road area here on Sunday, assistant superintendent of police Atul Kulkarni said. The police caught eight people allegedly indulging in gambling and seized Rs 64,650 cash, four cars and a motorcycle from the premises, he said. The partially burnt body of a woman was found under a bridge in Thane district of Maharashtra, police said on Monday. Some locals alerted the police on Sunday after they spotted the body, of a nearly 25-year-old woman whose face was charred beyond recognition, lying under Raya bridge in Titwala town here, police spokesman Yuvraj Kalgutke said. The police rushed to the spot and sent the body for postmortem, he said. The police suspect that someone killed the woman and burnt the body to hide the crime, the official said.
