With the arrest of one person police Thursday claimed to have foiled a bid to smuggle cattle to the Valley and rescued 16 bovines. During the routine checking in Ghagwal area, a truck which was on its way to Kathua district was signalled to stop at highway at Tapyal, police said. The accused driver Maan Singh accelerated the vehicle and tried to escape from the spot, police said, adding that after successful chase, the truck was intercepted near Jatwal. During checking, 16 bovines were found laden inside the vehicle, which were being transported illegally without any permission, police said. The accused driver was arrested on the spot and all the bovine animals were rescued, they said, adding that a case has been registered.
Two men were arrested for allegedly snatching mobile phones from northeast Delhi, police said Thursday. The accused, identified as Shahbaz (20) and Suhail (18), are residents of Chauhan Bangar, they said. On Tuesday, during patrolling, police arrested Shahbaz and Suhail. Ashish Pandey, the son of a former BSP MP who has been accused of brandishing a pistol and threatening the guests at a five-star hotel here, told the police Thursday that he was instigated by a woman, who had shown him the "middle finger," after which he had got the weapon from his car. A man in cyclone-ravaged Odisha's Gajapati district Thursday apparently walked for eight kilometres carrying the body of his seven-year-old daughter, who died in a landslide, on his shoulder for post-mortem. The incident, footage of which was shown by local channels, was reminiscent of a 2016 episode, when a man had walked 10 km carrying his dead wife on his shoulder after being denied a hearse at Bhawanipatna government hospital in Kalahandi district. The Gajapati incident happened in Atankpur village under Laxmipur gram panchayat. Mukund Dora put daughter Babita's body in a sack and carried it on his shoulder for the post mortem. Two gangsters were arrested at Korutla in Telangana Thursday and two country made pistols seized from their possession, police said. Hanzil Shaik alias Raju Bhayya of West Bengal and Kadari Tirupathi, a resident of Vedurugata village, were arrested after they were found moving about in suspicious circumstances in the area. On searching them, police found the pistols, ten rounds of ammunition and Rs 6000 in cash. Shaik was earlier arrested in the killing of P Satyanarayana Reddy at Dharmapuri mandal in May, 2018 and was lodged in Karimnagar district prison, police said. Two persons on a motorcycle died when a goods vehicle lost control and fell on them near Turf View on AJC Bose ramp of the Vidyasagar Setu Thursday morning, police said, Subhadeep Chakraborty (22) and pillion rider Pratim Kundu (21) were severely injured when the sugar loaded goods vehicle side turned on their motorcycle at around 4.20 am, a Kolkata Police officer said. The two were without helmets when the mishap happened, he said adding that they were declared "brought dead" when rushed to the SSKM hospital. A 25-year-old woman from West Bengal was allegedly gang raped for 10 days in confinement at a market complex in Puri district, police said Thursday. Police have detained two youths in connection with the crime and interrogating them, Puri district additional superintendent of police Gagarin Mohanty said. The woman was rescued by the police after breaking the lock on Wednesday after she raised an alarm from the roof top of the building where she was detained. Police said the woman was admitted to the Puri district headquarters hospital. She was brought to Odisha by another woman named Kajal on the pretext of getting her a job a year ago and was forced into prostitution by her and her male friend. The Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund (JNMF) has been asked to appear before a quasi-judicial body of the Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry within seven days in connection with the alleged illegal possession of the Teen Murti Bhavan premises. The ministry's direction comes days after it issued a notice to the JNMF, chaired by senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, to vacate the property. "A notice has been issued to the JNMF, asking it to appear before the quasi-judicial authority and present its stand on the matter. "Also, the Directorate of Estates will be heard. Local police and a team of Ludhiana police raided a house in Irani Nagar in Kalyan area of the district Wednesday and nabbed Lalu Khani Irani (55). A Commercial Tax Officer was arrested by Anti-Corruption Bureau sleuths Thursday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 in Rajasthan's Bharatpur district, officials said. The accused, Mahaveer Singh Aasiwal, had demanded the bribe from Komal Singh for some official work, following which he lodged a complaint, they said. "After verification of the complaint, a trap was laid today and the accused was caught in his office red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of Rs 50,000," an official of the ACB said. A Forest ranger from Madhya Pradesh was arrested here Wednesday, months after a case was registered against him for allegedly helping poachers of a black buck by tampering with evidence, police said Thursday. The runaway officer, identified as Bihari Singh Sikarwar, was carrying a reward of Rs 10,000 on his head. "He was arrested from his residence in Ganesh Dham Colony Wednesday evening," said Special Task Force (STF) deputy superintendent of police DK Singh.
