Black Money case: HC extends relief to Chidambaram's kin till Nov 2

The Madras High Court Friday extended an interim order dispensing with the appearance of former Union minister P Chidambaram's family members before a special court here till November 2 in a case of 'non-disclosure' of foreign assets filed against them by the I-T department. A division bench of Justices S Manikumar and Subramonium Prasad, has already reserved its order on the main appeals moved by Chidambaram's wife, son and daughter-in-law, challenging the prosecution initiated against them by the Income Tax department under the Black Money Act. On September 14, the court in an interim order dispensed with the appearance of Chidambaram's wife Nalini, his son, Karti and daughter-in-law Srinidhi before the special court for economic offences cases, Egmore till October 12. Man gets three years RI for abetting wife's suicide

A court at Thane in Maharashtra has sentenced a 40-year-old businessman to three years of rigorous imprisonment for abetting the suicide of his wife in 2012. In his order passed on Wednesday, district judge R V Tamhanekar convicted Pravin Shetty, a resident of Kharigaon-Kalwa, and awarded the sentence. The court, however, acquitted three others, including Shetty's brother and sister, from the case. Prosecutor Rekha Hiwrale said the accused, who married Kirti in May 2012, used to come home drunk and torture her physically and mentally. Kirti (30) used to complain to her parents about the frequent harassment by her husband. However, her parents would tell her to adjust as they were newly married. They would also ask Shetty not to harass her, the prosecutor said. On July 29 (2012), she told her parents that it was impossible for her to live with her husband as he continued to harass her under the influence of liquor and suspected her character. MP Court granted 6 weeks to respond to ex-judge's plea

The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to the registrar general of the Madhya Pradesh High Court while hearing a plea filed by a former woman district court judge.A bench of Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Ashok Bhushan sought a response from the high court within a period of six weeks on a plea seeking her reinstatement.The court agreed to hear the woman's plea who urged the apex court to treat her resignation as "constructive termination" as it was "neither voluntary nor conscious".Senior advocate Indira Jaising, appearing for the former judicial officer, contended before the bench that her resignation was "actuated by her illegal mid-term transfer which was unjustified, arbitrary and actuated by bias/mala fides" amounting to constructive dismissal.She alleged that the judge, who was her supervisor at the time, had sexually harassed her from December 2013 till after her resignation on July 17, 2014.The former judicial officer was transferred from Gwalior to Sidhi, and she later .

Tamil magazine employees move Madras HC for anticipatory bail

Thirty-five employees, including journalists, of a Tamil weekly have moved the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail in connection with a case filed against them and the magazine's editor over articles that allegedly disparaged Governor Banwarilal Purohit. The employees of the vernacular 'Nakkheeran' have been named as accused in the FIR registered over which the editor R Gopal was arrested by police and subsequently released by a city court. On October 9, Gopal was picked up by a police team from the airport here, when he was on his way to Pune. Germany to extradite suspect in Bulgarian journalist killing 'soon'

A German court said Friday that a man suspected of the rape and murder of Bulgarian television journalist Viktoria Marinova would be extradited to Bulgaria in the coming days. "The extradition of the accused can be expected soon," the superior regional court in Celle said in a statement. It added that the 20-year-old suspect, who was arrested on Tuesday on a European warrant, had said during questioning "that he did not want to kill the victim and denied raping her". "The arrested man admitted to the court that he had a verbal argument with the victim on October 6, 2018," it said. "He was under the strong influence of alcohol and drugs and punched the woman in the face, at which point she fell down. Man shot dead in Mumbai's Dadar area, shooter flees

A 35-year-old man was Friday shot at in Dadar in central Mumbai and he succumbed to injuries after being rushed to hospital, police said. Manoj Mourya was shot from behind by an unidentified person on Senapati Bapat Road in Dadar West Friday morning. He was rushed to KEM Hospital in Parel where he died of bullet wounds, the official added. The shooter managed to escape from the scene of incident and a hunt was on to nab him, he said. CCTV footage from the busy area was being scoured by police teams, the official said. A case of murder has been registered under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and further probe was underway, the official informed.

SC refuses to stay WB decision to grant Rs 28 cr to Durga puja committees

The Supreme Court Friday refused to stay the decision of the West Bengal government to grant Rs 28 crore to 28,000 Durga puja committees across the state. A bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta, however, issued notice to the state government on a plea challenging the decision to grant Rs 10,000 each to 28,000 Durga Puja committees, and sought its reply within six weeks. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the state government, said the money has not been directly paid to puja committees and has been given through the state police. The top court was hearing a petition filed by advocate Sourav Dutta, challenging the Mamata Banerjee government's decision to dole out Rs 28 crore to puja committees in the state for Durga Puja celebrations. On September 10, Banerjee had declared that Rs 10,000 would be given to each of the 28,000 puja committees across the state --3,000 in the city and 25,000 in the districts, costing the government Rs 28 crore. Goa: Nigerian national arrested for illegally staying in India

Telangana: Missing girl reunites with family after 2 years

The Cyberabad Police's 'Operation Smile' teams reunited an 11-year-old girl with her family after two years.The girl went missing when she was nine-year-old at a temple.In a telephonic conference to ANI, Anuradha, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of SHE Teams, said that from past few days, they were studying government-run shelter homes. It was during this time that the team visited a shelter home and found the girl named Sandhya."The girl said that she went missing from at Venkateswara Temple, Kukatpally two years ago. Later she was brought to shelter home from there," the police said."The girl said that she can identify the address of her residence if taken to the place from where she went missing," she added.The team later took the girl to her residence, only to found out that her parents left the place a few months ago. Chandigarh: Sikh women exempted from wearing helmets

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has advised Chandigarh administration to exempt Sikh women from wearing helmet while driving two-wheelers in Chandigarh.The decision came after Sikh bodies made a representation to Home Minister Rajnath Singh.The MHA on Thursday stated that it has directed the Chandigarh administration to implement an amendment to the Motor Vehicle Act that was carried out by the Delhi government. That amendment had exempted Sikh women from wearing helmets while riding two-wheelers.The Department of Transport, Delhi Government, vide its notification issued on June 4, 1999, carried out the amendment in Rule 115 of Delhi Motor Vehicle Act 1993, making it optional for women "whether riding on pillion or driving motorcycle to wear a protective headgear."The Rule was further amended, vide a notification dated August 28, 2014, as " in the Delhi Motor Vehicle Rule 1993, in Sub-Rule 115 for the word "Women" the word "Sikh Women" shall be submitted.

17-yr-old girl gang raped, killed in UP

A 17-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly raped and killed by three persons when she was alone at her house in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, police said Friday. Based on a complaint by a family member of the girl, a case was registered against Sanoj Kumar, Jaivir and Sonu Thursday, Additional Superintendent of Police Ajay Pertap said. The girl's body was found hanging from a ceiling fan in the house, the officer said. She was alone in the house as her parents had gone to Panipat, he said. The matter is being investigated and a search was launched to nab the accused, Pertap said.

UP man commits suicide after video showing him being thrashed surfaces online

A 20-year-old man allegedly committed suicide after a video of him being beaten up for harassing a girl here surfaced online, police said Friday. Kapil's body was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in his house Thursday, Station House Officer (SHO) Harsharan Sharma said. Ponzi scheme suspect paid USD 720K for prayers amid SEC probe

An investment adviser charged with orchestrating a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme spent nearly three-quarters of a million dollars on prayers by Hindu priests in India to ward off a federal investigation and save her failing business, according to testimony at her trial this week. Using investors' money, Dawn Bennett paid a man in Washington state approximately USD 720,000 between 2015 and 2017 to arrange for the priests to perform religious ceremonies meant to ease her troubles, said a Justice Department prosecutor and the man Bennett paid. For one of these "yagya" rituals, Bennett spent USD 7,250 for five priests to pray for her across 29 consecutive days. Illegal call centre busted in Maha, one held

A call centre operating illegally in Mumbra township in Thane district of Maharashtra and providing services to two US-based pharma companies, was busted and its owner was arrested, police said Friday. The accused, identified as Abdul Vashid Kadir Chowdhary (23), was arrested following a raid on the call centre located at Amrut Nagar locality in Mumbra on Thursday morning, police said. Senior inspector of Mumbra police station Kishore Pasalkar said the police had received a tip-off that the call centre was being run without permission. Based on the tip-off, Thane Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar directed the Mumbra police to act and the raid was carried out around 6 am on Thursday, he said.
