Liverpool sign teenage Italian centre-back Giovanni Leoni from Padova

Liverpool's offseason spending passed 300 million pounds (USD 400 million) after completing the signing of 18-year-old Parma defender Giovanni Leoni. The Italy Under-19 international was contracted for six years for 26 million pounds plus add-ons. He was to be at Anfield for the Premier League opener against Bournemouth on Friday night. Leoni previously played for Padova and Sampdoria. He joined Parma a year ago and impressed. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate were the established center backs, and Leoni will vie with Joe Gomez to challenge them. "Because it's one of the best clubs in the world it's not possible to say no to this club," Leoni told liverpoolfc.com. "I'm so honoured. I was very happy (about Liverpool being interested). When I saw this I said, Wow, this is crazy.'" Liverpool also remained interested in Crystal Palace center back Marc Guehi, although discussions have stalled over a fee for a player in the final year of his contract. Despite signi

Premier League Highlights: Liverpool beat Bournemouth 4-2 in opening tie

Defending champion Liverpool launched the Premier League with a dramatic 4-2 win over Bournemouth at Anfield in an emotionally charged match featuring tributes to Diogo Jota and a player reporting racial abuse. Federico Chiesa scored in the 88th minute on Friday and Mohamed Salah added another goal in stoppage time as Liverpool recovered after throwing away a two-goal lead. In between goals by Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo that put Liverpool 2-0 ahead, the game was briefly paused in the 28th after Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo reported to referee Anthony Taylor that he was targeted with racist language by a spectator. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola said the person who abused Semenyo was identified. Semenyo, a 25-year-old Ghana international, needed to be consoled by teammates after the alleged incident but played on for the whole match and scored in the 64th and 76th to draw Bournemouth level. His second was a brilliant individual goal starting deep inside his own half. "I

Liverpool vs Bournemouth PL game halted after Semenyo faces racist abuse

The opening match of the Premier League between Liverpool and Bournemouth briefly stopped after Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused by a spectator inside Anfield. In the 28th minute with the score at 0-0 on Friday, referee Anthony Taylor talked to Semenyo, who is Black, while Liverpool was preparing to take a corner. Taylor then ran over to the sideline and spoke to both coaches, Liverpool's Arne Slot and Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola. After also talking to the captains, play resumed about two minutes later. Semenyo's complaint was the reason for the stoppage, the Premier League confirmed to the Associated Press. Bayern Munich rope in Luis Diaz from Liverpool on 4-year contract

Bayern Munich signed Liverpool winger Luis Daz to a four-year contract on Wednesday in the German champion's biggest deal of the offseason so far. The move balances out Liverpool's heavy spending with a fee reported at 75 million euros ($87 million) by German media, while Bayern dips into the millions it earned at the Club World Cup, a competition Liverpool didn't qualify for. Daz had been with Liverpool since 2022 and scored 17 goals in 50 games across all competitions last season as the club won the Premier League title. From today on I'm part of this lovely family, Diaz said in Spanish in a video message posted on Bayern's social media accounts. Daz leaves amid Isak speculationLiverpool had dismissed talk of the 28-year-old Colombia winger leaving but its approach shifted when he was left out of the squad for a preseason friendly loss to AC Milan on Saturday. Siraj honours Diogo Jota, calls life unpredictable after emotional moment

India pacer Mohamemd Siraj has said he felt really emotional on hearing the news about Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota's death in a car accident, and his gesture after taking the wicket of Jaime Smith on day 2 of the third Test against England here was a tribute to the Portuguese forward. After dismissing Smith, Siraj indicated the number '20' -- Jota's jersey number at Liverpool -- with his fingers. He then raised both hands skywards as a mark of respect for the footballer, who along with his brother Andre Silva died in a mishap in the Zamora region of Spain on July 3 while returning to Liverpool for a pre-season training. Siraj, said he wanted to pay his respect in the last Test itself, which India won by 336 runs to level the series. "We got to know during the last match (in Birmingham) that Diogo Jota has died in an accident," Siraj said in a video posted by BCCI. "Because I am a Portugal fan, and because CR7 (Cristiano Ronaldo) plays for that team, I felt emotional. I wanted t
