Lucknow building collapse: 3 more bodies recovered, toll rises to 8

The death toll in the building collapse here climbed to eight with rescuers pulling out three more bodies from the debris, officials said on Sunday. Twenty-eight people were injured when the three-storey building housing godowns and a motor workshop collapsed in the Transport Nagar area here on Saturday evening. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) recovered the bodies of three people, who were identified as Raj Kishore (27), Rudra Yadav (24) and Jagrup Singh (35), during the rescue operation, Relief Commissioner G S Naveen said. The operation is still underway. A senior district administration official said they are now focusing on ensuring that no one else is trapped under the rubble. Police said the building was constructed around four years ago and some construction work was underway at the time of the incident. Multi-storey building collapses in Lucknow, 5 dead, several feared trapped

A three-storey building collapsed in the Transport Nagar area here on Saturday evening, trapping around a dozen people under the rubble, officials said. As per information provided by the office of the UP Relief Commissioner, ten people were injured in the incident. They were rescued and sent to the hospital. The incident occurred at around 5 pm. The building was being used as a godown, officials said. Some construction work was being done in the three-storey building, police said. Senior police and administrative officials are on the spot to oversee the ongoing rescue operations. "Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed to the scene and are working to extricate the trapped individuals," said Relief Commissioner GS Naveen Kumar. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken note of the situation and is monitoring the rescue efforts closely.

Meta AI alerts Lucknow police, saves woman from committing suicide

Social media company Meta AI saved the life of a woman who was attempting to commit suicide here, as she was allegedly upset over being abandoned by her husband, a police official said. The police have arrested the 23-year-old husband of the woman. According to the police, the woman, 21, was going to commit suicide. She made a video with a noose around her neck and posted it on social media. While the video was going viral, the Social Media Centre of the office of the Directorate General of Police received an alert from Meta and the police became active. They immediately reached the spot after locating the village and stopped the girl from committing suicide. UP govt announces formation of State Capital Region on lines of NCR

The Uttar Pradesh government Friday notified the formation of the State Capital Region' (SCR) on the lines of the National Capital Region (NCR). Governor Anandiben Patel also approved the establishment of Uttar Pradesh State Capital Region Development Authority (UP-SCRDA). The Housing and Urban Planning Department issued the notification following her approval to the proposals. The notification said the newly formed Uttar Pradesh State Capital Region includes Lucknow and the adjoining districts of Hardoi, Sitapur, Unnao, Rae Bareli and Barabanki. According to the notification, a total area of 27,826 square kilometres will be included in the SCR. The UP-SCRDA will oversee the implementation of development projects and ensure effective management of resources within the newly defined area. The Uttar Pradesh government has transferred 11 Indian Police Service officers, including the police commissioners of Lucknow and Prayagraj, officials said on Saturday. Over 1,200 illegal structures razed in demolition drive in Lucknow

The demolition work of illegal buildings on the river bed of Kukrail river in Akbarnagar has been completed, officials of the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) on Wednesday said. Around 1,169 illegal residential properties and over 100 commercial properties were demolished using heavy machinery, including bulldozers, they said. The demolition work to vacate the illegal encroachment over an area of 24.5 acre land began in December last year. Over 1,320 illegal structures, including the religious places of both Hindu and Muslim communities, have been demolished in the area. The LDA officials said that around 100 buildings were demolished on Tuesday and added the work of clearing the debris will be undertaken now. LS polls Phase 5: EC asks voters in Mumbai, UP to ensure higher turnout

On the eve of phase five of Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission on Sunday pointed out that Mumbai, Thane and Lucknow have shown apathy towards voting in the past and asked these city dwellers to turnout in higher numbers. The poll authority noted that in the past these cities have "suffered" from urban apathy in voting. "The Commission specially calls upon these city dwellers to erase the stigma by turning out in higher numbers," it said. On May 3 too, while referring to voter turnout in phase two, the Commission had said it was "disappointed" with the turnout level in some metropolitan cities. The EC had last month assembled many metro Commissioners here to work out a strategy to fight urban apathy.
