After heavy defeat in MCD polls, Cong to rework strategy: Delhi unit chief

A day after the Congress' dismal showing in the MCD elections, the party's Delhi unit chief on Thursday said they wanted to rework the strategies. The Congress' vote share in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections dipped to 11.68 per cent from 21.2 per cent, with the party managing to secure only nine seats in the 250-ward civic body. The party will analyse the results and the strategies worked on accordingly, Congress Delhi unit chief Anil Chaudhary told PTI. "The party's strategies will be reworked after analysing the MCD election results. But the vote share also sends out a clear message that the Muslim and Dalit votes shifted from the AAP to the Congress," he said. Most of the seats the party won in the MCD election are in Muslim-dominated areas. The party's women candidates won from two wards in south Delhi, including in Shaheen Bagh -- the epicentre of the 2019 anti-CAA protests - defeating their AAP rivals. The AAP on Thursday termed its win in the MCD polls a victory of the people and a big responsibility, while the BJP thanked voters for "recognising" its work and making it victorious in over 100 wards. In what turned out to be a closer-than-expected contest, the AAP ended the BJP's 15-year stint in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) by winning 134 seats. The latest trends in the MCD elections show the Aam Aadmi Party just edging past the the BJP. The BJP has won 10 seats and the AAP six as the results started trickling in. The MCD has 250 wards, and the simple majority mark is 126. According to the trends available on the State Election Commission website at 10:45 am, the AAP was leading in 127 seats and the BJP in 106. The Congress was a long way behind at 11. The initial trends (at 9:30 am) put the BJP ahead of the AAP by a significant margin, but the pendulum swung in the AAP's favour soon after. MCD polls: Tight security arrangements put in place at counting centres

Twenty companies of paramilitary personnel and over 10,000 officers of Delhi Police have been deployed at the 42 centres where votes for the civic polls in the national capital will be counted on Wednesday, officials said. Counting will begin at 8 am under tight security arrangements, they said. Besides the counting centres, heavy police presence will also be ensured outside the offices of political parties. Authorities here are all geared up for the counting of votes polled in the Delhi municipal elections, with officials saying 42 centres have ben set up for the Wednesday exercise which will begin at 8 am amid tight security. 50% voting recorded in MCD elections; both AAP, BJP claim victory

Around 50 per cent voting was recorded on Sunday in the election to the 250 municipal wards in Delhi, with main rivals BJP and AAP claiming victory in the high-stakes contest. No major glitches in electronic voting machines were reported and the voting passed off peacefully with high security observed at the 3,360 critical booths in 493 locations where more than 25,000 police personnel, nearly 13,000 home guards and 100 companies of paramilitary forces were deployed, officials said. Several people in North-East Delhi and some other areas complained that their names were missing from the voters' lists. Anil Kumar, the Delhi Congress president, was among the people who could not vote. The BJP said it has filed a complaint with the state election commission over the missing names.
